From the moment Kael saw Thane Greystone raise his sword and bring it down on his father’s neck, severing his head from his body—only to return to the pack and lie that his father had died in the war—Kael swore vengeance.
That day, he made a vow.
He would bring every last Greystone to their knees. He would take their throne, even if it cost him his last breath.
And there was only one way to do it.
He had to marry the heir to the Alpha position—Arianna Greystone.
She was just like her father. She carried the traits of a leader, was annoyingly strict, and had those same piercing eyes that reminded him of the bastard Thane Greystone.
He had tried to get close to her, to make his move, but Arianna never spared him a glance.
Not until the Moon Goddess herself seemed to grant his deepest desire by mating them.
Perhaps even the Moon Goddess saw how unfair the Greystones were.
Only then did Kael Fangton begin plotting his revenge.
Darius and several elders, who had always opposed Arianna becoming the pack’s heir—because she was a girl and, according to Darius, a half-bastard—stood by Kael’s side.
They believed only a true ruler deserved the position.
And Kael was ready to take it.
They manipulate Arianna to agree to marriage before her ascension, and she accepted—because back then, she had been so in love with Kael.
After their marriage, Kael did what he had to do.
To him, she had been dead long before they even became mates.
She had been a thorn in his heart. And now—she was here again.
How the fuck was this possible?
"Arianna," Kael muttered, then let out a soft, self-mocking laugh. "You're alive?"
"I am very much alive," Arianna replied, her voice devoid of emotion. "The guards didn't kill me. They branded me a traitor and sold me here as a slave."
"You’re the king’s slave." Kael finally pieced it together.
At the inn… It had been her. The boy.
No wonder she had seemed familiar. That faint scent he had caught before he was interrupted—by the king himself.
Arianna ignored his reaction and went straight to the point.
"Do you still deny the claims that rest upon your shoulders? You betrayed a throne out of selfishness. You stabbed and spread lies—"
"You don’t know what you’re talking about," Kael cut in, shaking his head before turning to the king. "Your Majesty, I don’t know how she is alive, but this is all fake!"
Then, he turned back to Arianna. "Are you truly Arianna Greystone? Or just some imposter Elder Varyn and Lylah set up to deceive me?"
"Really? That’s your comeback?" Arianna raised a brow, the sight of it immediately angering Kael. Then, she stepped forward, closing the distance between them.
"Take a good look, Kael," she said, her voice low and dangerous. "You have no idea how long I’ve waited for this. Days and nights, I prayed to the gods above, wishing for the day I could tear you apart before everyone—so they would see how a bastard like you took my love and ripped me apart on our wedding night. How you looked me in the eyes and stole everything from me."
Kael’s jaw clenched, his breath uneven, his expression disturbed—while Arianna remained eerily calm.
"I swore I would make you pay sevenfold, Kael. I will make you grit your teeth, sweat until you feel dry. I will strip everything from you, including your dignity. Make you tremble. Make you swear. Make you furious. I shall crave my vengeance into your bones so deep that even in the afterlife, you'll bare my mark and regret the day you ever thought of betraying me."
Each of her words was like a sharp dagger pressing against Kael's throat. His frame trembled at her tone.
She had changed—a lot. She was no longer the woman who once melted in his arms.
For a fleeting moment, Kael’s eyes flicked to his dagger, anger and frustration clouding his senses, making him momentarily forget they were standing before the Elites.
Arianna taunted him further. "What’s wrong, Kael? You look uneasy. Are the walls closing in on you?"
Without thinking, Kael lunged. He snatched the dagger from the floor and charged at her, aiming for her left chest.
A guard, having anticipated Kael’s intention, moved effortlessly to stop the attack. With swift movement, he swung his sword, disarming Kael and severing four of his fingers.
Pain shot through Kael. His eyes widened as he screamed, stumbling away from Arianna.
Murmurs erupted through the audience as they finally saw Kael’s true nature exposed.
Arianna turned to King Duncan and gave him a respectful bow. She could see he was restraining himself.
"That would be all, Your Majesty."
Kael groaned as his body began to heal, his jaw clenched tight. Only then did he fully register his surroundings.
Everyone had seen.
Haha. Nice one, Arianna.
She was damn good at hitting nerves.
Now he understood why they had given him a dagger.
Kael let out a soft chuckle, a vein pulsing at his jaw. Slowly, he pushed himself to his feet, scanning the audience before his gaze finally settled on King Duncan.
"Your Grace… I…" He hesitated. "She doesn't deserve that position!" Kael’s voice sharpened. "I do! She’s a bastard, after all!"
Oh, now he was calling her a bastard?
Who the hell does he think he is?
He is so disgusting.
Murmurs rose like a storm among the crowd.
"I'm not lying! I'm telling the truth this time, believe me!" Kael shouted, but no one did. They all stared at him with disgust.
King Duncan’s voice was like thunder.
"Kael Fangton. You dared to lie, denied the treason you committed, and even attempted it again. For that, you shall be stripped of your title and rank. Your fate shall be decided by the very same woman you betrayed. Every punishment she decrees must be carried out."
Kael’s lips parted. Oh no.
"Y… Your Grace?"
Arianna flicked her gaze to Kael and ordered the guards stepped forward to seize him.
"This isn’t real! Your… Grace… Your Grace!" Kael shouted, his frantic eyes locking onto Arianna’s figure as she turned to leave.
"Aria! You can’t do this to me! Let’s talk, alright?!" His voice rose in desperation.
But she didn’t stop.
Her frame disappeared through the gates.
"Aria!!"
Chains coiled around his wrists, binding him.
"ARIA!!!"
