I didn't know the exact details of what happened next.
But I could piece it together—Benjamin probably wanted Mia to get rid of the baby. She must have sobbed and pleaded until he finally gave in, agreeing to let her keep it.
It wasn't exactly shocking—Benjamin Davis, a married man, had knocked up a pretty college student. But it wasn't nothing, either. Everyone in our circle knew, though no one dared to bring it up.
Naturally, people pitied me.
With Mia by his side, Benjamin seemed to discover his inner father figure. He started going to her prenatal appointments, doting on her, playing the devoted partner.
How did I know?
Because I saw them—standing less than thirty feet away from me. I caught a glimpse of the ultrasound report. The baby was healthy.
My own baby had been kind to me—never giving me trouble, content in my womb, sometimes kicking gently as if to say hello. My baby loved me.
Three more months. Just three more months, and I'd finally hold my child in my arms.
But that day never came.
Life has a cruel way of derailing even the simplest plans.
When Mia and I tumbled down the stairs together, Benjamin's instincts kicked in—he reached for her, shielding her.
Mia burst into tears, clutching her stomach. "Our baby… we almost lost our baby…"
I lay on the floor, blood pooling beneath me, my body screaming in agony. I turned my head just enough to see Benjamin fussing over Mia. The pain told me everything.
I was losing my baby.
I had failed.
Benjamin finally snapped into action, calling for an ambulance.
But it was too late.
After the surgery, I sat in bed, staring at my hollow stomach. Silent tears dripped onto my hands. "I'm sorry… I'm so sorry…"
"I'm calling the police! Mia murdered my baby!"
Benjamin stayed quiet. He took my hand. Maybe he'd seen what really happened. Maybe he was grieving too. Maybe—
"Mia didn't mean to."
I laughed, the sound brittle and broken. "But my baby was innocent."
"He was yours too, Benjamin."
In the end, Benjamin buried the whole thing. He finally agreed to divorce me—paid for with my child's life.
Outside the courthouse, Benjamin checked his watch like he had somewhere better to be. "You'll get a fair settlement."
"Let's keep in touch," I said.
"Actually, better not. Mia wouldn't like it."
He couldn't wait to prove his loyalty to her.
But I wasn't ready to let him off that easy.
I led him down memory lane, past all the places we'd once shared, until we stopped in front of the movie theater where he'd proposed.
Benjamin sighed. "Are we done here?"
I nodded. "We're done."
He didn't even remember.
But it didn't matter anymore.
"Benjamin, I don't love you anymore."
"Now you're free."
