I stayed at the villa, resting comfortably and taking care of myself during my pregnancy. I called my lawyer to push for a faster divorce—so we could both move on sooner.
To my surprise, Benjamin came home early that evening. He'd been pulling overtime for nearly six months, so his sudden appearance caught me off guard.
His face was stormy with anger, his glare so venomous it made me feel like an adversary, not the woman he'd claimed to love for years.
"Why?" he demanded, voice tight. "Why did you fire Mia? What did she do wrong? She was in tears when I called her."
Compared to his fury, I was eerily calm.
"She's a homewrecker," I said flatly. "Isn't that reason enough?"
"No! That's—" He dragged a hand through his hair, frustration twisting his features. "There's nothing between us. You're imagining things."
He tugged at his collar, then softened his tone, stepping closer like he used to when he thought sweet words could fix everything. "Honey, you know you're the one I love most in this world."
That sentence froze me. My throat tightened, tears pricking at my eyes, but I tilted my head up—refusing to let him see how deeply his lie still cut.
Eighteen-year-old me had believed those words with her whole heart.
How could the same man stand before me now and say them so easily?
Did he even feel a shred of guilt?
I met his gaze, my smile sharp. "Benjamin," I said, voice steady. "Look me in the eyes and tell me—have you ever betrayed me?"
"No," he said instantly.
"Do you dare swear it?"
