Benjamin stayed quiet for what felt like forever. He lit a cigarette, the smoke curling between us like a foggy curtain, blurring his face until I could barely make out his expression.
He took his time answering. When his eyes finally met mine, they were cold—dull with disappointment.
"Eleanor, you've changed."
His voice was flat. "You let me down."
"I'll arrange for someone to look after you. I'll come back in a few days when we've both cooled off."
With that, he snatched his suit jacket and walked out without a second glance—like he couldn't get away fast enough.
"How could he just... leave you like that?"
Young Eleanor appeared beside me, her face streaked with tears.
"How could he throw you away... for someone else?"
I stood frozen, my legs barely holding me up. My whole body felt numb, icy. But I was used to it by now.
I forced a smile and wiped her tears. "Eleanor, don't cry."
"You have all the love Benjamin had to give when he was eighteen."
"You should be proud of that."
"Don't waste your tears on someone who doesn't deserve them."
And he didn't.
For the first time, I was sure—I wanted the divorce.
My parents noticed something was wrong and came to talk sense into me.
"Benjamin told us everything," my father said carefully. "Is this about that girl?"
"Eleanor, you're pregnant, and you're not as young as you used to be," he added. "I know pregnancy makes you overthink things, but Benjamin hasn't done anything wrong. He already let the maid go. Couples shouldn't go to bed angry, right?"
My mother nodded, taking my hand in hers. "Your father's right. We've all seen how good Benjamin's been to you over the years. You're convinced he's betrayed you, but..."
She hesitated, then squeezed my fingers. "He's an important man now. There will always be women circling him. But after all this time, he won't just walk away."
"So... Eleanor, for the children's sake, try to make it work. I know you're hurting, but... it's been so long."
Her voice cracked. "We're getting old. We just want to know you'll be taken care of.
When we're gone, we need to rest easy, knowing you're safe. Please... promise me you'll try?"
Their eyes were pleading.
I pulled my hands away slowly, my silence louder than any argument. But inside, the weight of their fear pressed down on me.
"Eleanor, don't overcomplicate things," my mother pressed. "Benjamin swore nothing happened with that maid."
My father cut in. "You've always been stubborn, but life isn't that simple anymore. You're an adult. You have responsibilities. Consequences."
"So think again."
That night, Benjamin came back. My parents left quickly after dinner, not wanting to intrude.
I watched from the doorway as they shuffled away, their shoulders hunched—and my heart ached.
They were just so afraid. Afraid their only daughter would struggle.
"Have you come to your senses yet?"
Benjamin's voice cut through the quiet, cold and detached.
"Are you still set on this divorce?"
His tone dripped with arrogance, like my defiance was nothing but an inconvenience.
I didn't turn around.
"Benjamin," I whispered. "Do you even love me anymore?"
He took his time answering. When his eyes finally met mine, they were cold—dull with disappointment.
