Nearly half a month had passed since Benjamin and I had our ugly confrontation—and he'd been avoiding me ever since.
Yet today, against all odds, Mia requested a meeting.
We sat across from each other in a quiet coffee shop. The downtrodden, pitiful Mia I once knew was gone. Now, she was draped in designer labels, every inch the polished socialite.
Of course, it was all Benjamin's doing.
"Mrs. Davis… since you don't love Benjamin anymore, why not just let me have him?"
I took a slow sip of coffee, grimacing at the bitterness. I still hadn't acquired the taste.
"Besides," she pressed on, "Benjamin told me he lost all feelings for you long ago. The only time he's happy is when he's with me."
"So, Mrs. Davis… why cling to him?"
Benjamin's affection had clearly worked wonders. The timid, mousy girl who once shrank from attention now sat before me, glowing with confidence.
But everything she flaunted—every luxury, every ounce of security—had been meant for me.
When I remained silent, Mia's patience wore thin. "Mrs. Davis, what's the point of holding onto a man who doesn't love you?"
"None at all," I agreed coolly.
"Then why haven't you asked Benjamin for a divorce instead of making me come to you?"
"I—" She faltered, caught off guard.
Because she knew.
Benjamin would never divorce me.
Infidelity was one thing, but he still had his limits.
No matter how much I pushed, he'd never sign those papers.
And Mia? She wasn't content to stay in the shadows forever. Now that she'd tasted the good life, she'd do anything to keep it.
That's why she was here.
"Why should I help you?" I asked.
This time, she was the one who couldn't answer. Her gaze flickered away, her words stumbling. Done with her games, I grabbed my purse and stood to leave.
"I'm pregnant!" she blurted.
"I just found out… The baby needs a father…"
"Mrs. Davis… please… help me…"
"Like you did before… you asked me to stay…"
Tears streamed down her face as she clutched my wrist, begging for mercy.
I yanked my hand away without pity. "It wasn't me who kept you here," I said coldly. "It was Benjamin."
"This has nothing to do with me."
