As I was about to put down my phone, Lindsay White suddenly sent me a video.
In the video, she was wearing a custom-made gown that Shawn Brown had specifically arranged for her, a crown on her head, surrounded by a crowd, looking like an empress in the center of it all.
Gerhard Brown was in her arms, and at the peak of the celebration, he cupped her face and kissed her, while Shawn stood beside them, watching with a look of indulgence.
At first glance, it looked like the perfect, happy family of three.
I stared at Lindsay's smile, feeling as though I were looking at my former self.
Back then, Gerhard always liked to snuggle in my arms, asking me to tell him bedtime stories before giving me a satisfied goodnight kiss.
It was always at these moments that Shawn would get jealous, turning his face toward me, asking for a kiss as well—on both cheeks, no less.
I never imagined that their love wasn’t just for me, but now belonged to another woman.
A heavy weight sank in my chest as I shakily typed "Best wishes, 99" and sent it off.
The next second, my phone rang. It was Shawn’s call. The moment I answered, I was greeted by a harsh reprimand.
"Winnie Smith, how many times do I have to tell you? Is it because you didn’t get to celebrate the anniversary? Why take your anger out on Lindsay? Just because we missed one anniversary, are you going to make a big deal of it?!"
So, he knew that today was our wedding anniversary.
On the other end of the line, Lindsay’s sobs soon filled my ears, as if she had been wronged beyond belief.
"Shawn, don’t scold her. It’s my fault. I insisted on sending her the video. I just felt so loved by you and Gerhard, and I wanted to share that joy with her. I didn’t expect her to be so petty, getting angry over something so small and calling me a mistress, a shameless bitch."
I couldn’t help but laugh. I never expected Lindsay to be so shameless, and yet so manipulative.
Shawn continued to berate me without knowing the full story, and I ended the call, starting to pack my things.
With three hours left before my flight, I wasn’t about to waste another minute on them.
On my way, my lawyer, Jack Spencer, sent me the electronic version of the divorce agreement, telling me that Shawn had received it.
Just as I was signing the final line, there was a knock at the door.
Shawn’s anxious voice came through: "Winnie, open the door!"
I opened it to find Shawn and Gerhard standing in the doorway, with Lindsay standing between them, holding a cake in her hands.
"Why are you taking so long? You made Lindsay wait outside," Shawn said, striding in and bumping my shoulder hard.
I staggered back, catching myself on the shoe cabinet to steady myself.
Shawn didn’t mention the divorce, probably because he hadn’t seen the agreement yet.
Gerhard, dragging Lindsay behind him, entered the room and tossed the cake onto the table like a charity.
"Aunt Lindsay felt sorry for you, with no one to spend your anniversary with, so she brought you a cake to celebrate your birthday with you. You should eat it."
The cake was obviously damaged, with cracks and bits of sand and hair stuck to it, looking utterly disgusting.
They wouldn’t even eat it, but they expected me to. It was laughable.
Just as I was about to refuse, Shawn’s cold voice interrupted.
"Winnie, are you really going back to your hometown?"
It was then that I realized he had noticed my suitcase by the bedroom door. A rare panic appeared on his face.
Gerhard stepped forward and kicked the suitcase over, as if he had figured everything out.
"Mom, you really are getting better at acting. To grab Dad’s attention, you’re even pretending to run away from home now."
"If you love acting so much, I’ll play along," Gerhard said, squatting down and violently yanking the zipper open, dumping all the contents onto the floor.
Everything I had carefully packed spilled out, a chaotic mess, including the bear Shawn had given me when we got married.
It held a special meaning for me, and I had planned to take it as a keepsake.
But when Gerhard saw it, he picked it up and laughed mockingly, as if he had found some kind of evidence.
"Dad, look! She’s even taking this bear you gave her. Isn’t she just putting on a show so you’ll pamper her?"
Shawn immediately adopted the "I knew it" look, staring at me.
