An inexplicable sense of humiliation crawled up my chest, and my clenched fist trembled. I wanted to explain, but before I could, Lindsay White interrupted.
"This ring is so beautiful," she said, her voice almost in awe. "How lovely it would be if I could wear it. Did you not wear it because you don’t like it?"
The little bear held a ring box with a large diamond ring inside. It represented sacred love—worth millions and a limited edition. Shawn Brown had spent over half a year just to obtain it.
It was the best gift I’d ever received, and I never had the heart to wear it.
Shawn took great care of it, never letting it get so much as a speck of dust. But now, he casually took the diamond ring off and slipped it onto Lindsay's finger.
"Well, since Winnie doesn’t wear it, if you like it, it’s yours."
A sharp snap echoed in my mind as the last string of control broke. I stared at Shawn in disbelief.
But he seemed oblivious to my reaction, turning to Lindsay with a look of devoted admiration.
"Of course, everything looks beautiful on you."
I tried to tell myself that it didn’t matter anymore, that it was just a bear—forget it, I didn’t need it.
Lindsay smirked, her eyes full of mockery as she glanced at me, her words dripping with sarcasm.
"Sister, Shawn gave me your diamond ring. You’re not angry, are you?"
"Why would she be angry? She doesn’t even wear it," Shawn muttered, clearly annoyed.
With that, he pulled out his phone and aimed it at Lindsay.
"By the way, I haven’t taken your picture yet. You look so beautiful today—can’t miss this moment."
Gerhard Brown immediately jumped to Lindsay’s side, grabbing her hand to pose for the photo as if they were a perfect mother-son duo, while I was left standing awkwardly on the sidelines, an outsider.
I wanted to tell them to get out, but with my flight departing soon, I had to suppress my anger and hurriedly began packing my scattered clothes back into the suitcase.
Lindsay seemed to suddenly realize something and turned to cut the worst part of the cake. She held it out to me.
"Oops, I got so caught up in taking photos, I almost forgot you haven’t eaten any cake. I heard you love grapes, so I made sure they added grape jam for you."
I couldn’t help but laugh. She loved grapes, not me. Just last month, to satisfy her, Shawn had bought the biggest vineyard nearby and gifted it to her.
But because Lindsay complained about peeling the grapes, Shawn had insisted that I peel them for three days straight. Since then, the sight of grapes made my head ache.
Lindsay was just using this excuse to force me to eat the spoiled cake.
I frowned and rejected her without hesitation. "I’m not eating it. I’m allergic to cream."
Gerhard, being so young, probably didn’t remember my allergy, but Shawn should have. I had told him about it on the first day we were together.
And since then, I hadn’t seen anything involving cream.
I thought that would be enough for them to back off, but to my surprise, Shawn let out a cold laugh.
"We’ve been together for so many years, and I’ve never seen you actually have an allergy. Stop being so dramatic. Lindsay isn’t asking you to eat it all—just one bite won’t kill you."
"No, it will."
When I was little, I once stole a bite of cream and had to be rushed to the emergency room that same night.
My parents had cut all dairy out of my life after that. They said they never wanted to go through that kind of despair again.
I didn’t want to cause them any more worry, so I turned to leave, but Shawn grabbed me roughly and pulled me back.
"Can you stop being so difficult? Lindsay came all the way here to bring you cake. You think she has nothing better to do? She’s just being kind and feels sorry for you being alone. How can you not eat it?"
He grabbed my chin, forcing me to open my mouth, and shoved a large spoonful of cream into it. I choked, coughing violently, my face turning red.
"What the hell are you doing, Shawn?!" I glared at him in fury, bent over, and spat the cream into the trash can.
But some of the cream still went down my throat, and I could only hope nothing would go wrong.
Shawn looked at me coldly, his face without a hint of apology.
"I’ve never heard of anyone dying from eating cream. You’re just being ridiculous."
I had been trying to let it go since I was leaving soon, but his attitude was pushing me to my limit. Just as I was about to get up and argue with him, Gerhard suddenly came charging toward me with a wicked grin on his face.
In the next second, he shoved a piece of cake right into my face.
The world seemed to go quiet for a moment. By the time I realized what had happened, my eyes were completely covered in cream.
