When I woke up, his side of the bed was cold—like he'd never been there at all.
I opened the door to the sound of laughter—something our usually quiet house had never heard before.
Standing at the railing, I looked down at the scene below.
The man who hadn't set foot in our kitchen in five years of marriage was making scrambled eggs.
The innocent-looking woman and cute kid were playing on our couch.
I felt mocking and bitter at the same time.
For a moment, I felt like the outsider in my own home.
The moment I came downstairs, their perfect family moment evaporated.
"Victoria," Alexander balanced a breakfast plate in his hands, his face a complete mask of indifference."
"When are you sending them away?" For the first time, I used that tone with him.
Instead of answering, Alexander lifted Emma into her high chair, getting her settled before looking at me with that controlled irritation I hated.
"I told you, she needs to go to school here."
I was getting pissed.
"Don't you dare tell me that Alexander Sterling—Mr. I-Can-Buy-Anything—can't figure out basic school paperwork!" I was losing control.
"Do you want the kid here, or the woman?"
"Victoria!" His voice cut through me like ice. "Watch your tone. Chloe is Emma's mother. She's just a child—how can she be away from her mom?"
The little girl suddenly threw hot porridge all over me, crying hysterically.
"I hate you! You're the mean lady breaking up Mommy and Daddy!"
The burning liquid on my legs made me wince in pain, shooting the kid a sharp look.
"Sorry, Emma didn't mean it. She just misses her daddy so much," Chloe quickly stepped between us.
I fought to steady my breathing, the brutal truth hitting me like a slap—they looked like the perfect little family unit.
And there I was, standing on the outside like some villain.
The fury bubbling inside me finally exploded as I locked eyes with Chloe.
"You think the Sterling family wants a five-year-old brat who doesn't know basic manners—"
"Victoria!" Alexander's voice was arctic, freezing my anger instantly.
He stared at me with a coldness I'd never seen before, completely emotionless.
"Emma is my daughter. As my wife, you will accept her. You completely lost your shit."
He picked up the crying girl and walked out, while Chloe naturally took his briefcase, looking back at me with pure smugness.
The noisy house suddenly went dead quiet.
My heart filled with bitterness.
To Alexander, I was the perfect Whitmore heir and the dignified wife.
So I wasn't allowed to have emotions or lose my composure.
Listening to his car drive away, my straight posture finally crumbled.
Alexander, you finally let me down.
Five years ago, the financial crash hit.
The Sterling and Whitmore families—Manhattan's power players—proposed an arranged marriage to fight off foreign buyouts.
As the Whitmore heir, I picked Alexander Sterling, fresh off his divorce.
I knew about his ex-wife and kid.
But back then I figured, hey, who doesn't have a past? Who doesn't have that one person they can't forget?
After we got married, Alexander was basically the perfect husband.
But when a man with that kind of iron self-control finally meets the one person who can make him bend all his rules...
That's when I realized I wasn't nearly as cool about it as I thought I'd be.
