A series of mocking laughs echoed in my ears.
"Mom, you’re so funny! I have to take a video and post it on my social media!" Gerhard Brown laughed so hard that he almost fell over, holding up his phone to record me.
I wiped the cream from my face, feeling utterly humiliated, and glanced at Shawn Brown and Lindsay White, whose smug grins made my stomach churn. In a panic, I turned and rushed into the bathroom.
Tears flowed uncontrollably. I thought I would be able to leave quietly, but the insults were too much, and I crumbled.
Just as I finished washing my face, I felt something was wrong with my body. First, the skin where the cream had touched began to itch and burn. Looking closely, I saw tiny bumps forming—horrifying to look at.
Then, pain surged through my throat and abdomen, and breathing became difficult.
I never imagined the allergic reaction would happen so quickly. I tried to call for an ambulance, but my phone was missing—somehow it had been lost.
My breathing became more labored. I tried to walk out, but my body felt as if it had no strength, and I collapsed to the floor.
I was in so much pain.
"Shawn, help me... Gerhard..."
Outside, the three of them were still playing around in the living room, smearing cream on each other, jumping and laughing with abandon. The entire house was a mess, cream splattered everywhere.
I screamed desperately for help, but it was as if they couldn’t hear me. In my haze, I even heard Gerhard’s dismissive voice.
"Mom’s probably just causing trouble again. Let’s ignore her."
Just as I was on the brink of suffocation, the bathroom door suddenly opened.
Shawn had probably gotten annoyed with me spending so much time in the bathroom and came to check on me. As soon as he opened the door, Lindsay’s scream echoed from behind him.
Without even glancing at me, he rushed back out, only to find that Lindsay had accidentally bumped her knee on the table and had a little bruise. He hurriedly scooped her up and rushed out of the room, his concern for her evident.
Gerhard followed closely behind, equally anxious.
The whole time, none of them spared me a single look, even though I had already passed out from suffocation.
It was only when a neighbor heard my cries that I was finally found and rushed to the hospital.
When I woke up, there was only half an hour left before the flight was scheduled to take off.
My phone rang—Dad.
"Winnie, have you reached the airport?"
I didn’t want Dad to worry, so I pretended to be calm.
"I’m here, Dad. I’ll call you and Mom when I’m off the plane."
Dad was good at reading people, and it didn’t take him long to hear the unease in my voice, but he didn’t say anything.
After receiving the doctor’s instructions, I planned to leave everything behind and head straight to the airport. But as soon as I stepped out of the hospital room, I ran into Shawn, Lindsay, and Gerhard.
Shawn was carrying Lindsay in his arms. When he saw me, he frowned.
"What are you doing at the hospital?"
"Mom, you really went all out just to steal Aunt Lindsay’s attention, huh? Chasing after her all the way to the hospital and making yourself look like a patient,"
Gerhard sneered, delivering a harsh blow. "Let me tell you, even if you die, Dad and I won’t spare you a second glance—unless you’re as gentle and kind as Aunt Lindsay."
The child I carried for ten months, the one I nearly lost my life for, said such cruel words to me.
My heart was shattered.
"Shawn, I’m so hungry. I really want something to eat, but my knee hurts so much. I can’t walk," Lindsay suddenly whined, clutching her stomach pitifully.
Without hesitation, Shawn replied, "What do you want to eat? I’ll go get it for you."
Lindsay shook her head stubbornly. "You and Gerhard have already been running around all day for me. I really can’t ask you to do more."
Her words made Shawn turn his gaze toward me, and he gave a command:
"I see you’re doing nothing, so why don’t you go get food for Lindsay? Gerhard and I will stay here to look after her."
I was in a rush to catch the flight, not wanting to waste time with them, so I just mumbled an "Mm" in response.
Seeing me so compliant, Shawn narrowed his eyes in suspicion. Just as he was about to speak, Lindsay cried out in pain, and his attention was diverted as he rushed to her side.
I watched their hurried departure, a bitter self-deprecating smile tugging at my lips. I turned and walked away from that painful place.
Just before boarding the plane, my phone rang again—it was Shawn calling.
I didn’t answer and hung up immediately.
But it seemed like he was doing it on purpose. He called repeatedly. I just turned off my phone, blocking out the noise.
Finally, the world fell silent.
