My parents, having seen me leave for so long, worried that something might have happened to me, rushed over to check on me. When they saw that I was calm and didn't seem too affected, they finally let out a sigh of relief.
Half a month after returning home, I went with Dad to visit the company, partly to familiarize myself with the environment so I could settle into my new role more quickly.
As we turned a corner, an employee, too hurried in her steps, collided directly with me, and in her hands was a small cake.
The impact sent the cake flying, splattering all over my clothes. Dad's face immediately went pale, and he hurried to send me to the hospital.
I shook my head, refusing. The cream had only gotten on my clothes, and since it hadn't touched my skin, I knew I was fine.
But Dad was still furious. He scolded the employee harshly. I knew she hadn't done it on purpose, so I quickly stepped in, reassuring her not to take Dad's words to heart. Only then did the young woman relax.
I watched my father, furrowing his brows in concern for me, and my heart ached. I walked over and took his arm, smiling softly.
"Dad, I’m hungry. Let’s go eat."
Seeing that I was truly fine, Dad’s tense expression finally softened. He nodded, leading me to the restaurant.
Just then, my phone rang. It was a call from Gerhard Brown's kindergarten teacher.
The teacher rarely called me, and whenever she did, it was usually something urgent. After a brief hesitation, I answered the phone.
"Is this Gerhard Brown’s mother?"
I replied with a simple "yes" and asked what the matter was.
"We’re holding our annual parent-child event at school, and all the other kids’ parents are attending, but Gerhard is the only one without a parent here."
Every year, I had always attended this event, but after Lindsay White entered the picture, Gerhard had refused to let me come, feeling that I would embarrass him in front of others. He insisted on having Lindsay represent his mother for the event.
I wasn’t sure what had happened between them, but this year, Lindsay didn’t show up to accompany him.
But what did that have to do with me? I wasn’t his mother anymore.
"I'm sorry, teacher, but I’ve divorced Mr. Brown. I’m no longer Gerhard's guardian. You should contact his father or Lindsay White. She’s his mother now."
There was a long silence on the other end before the teacher spoke cautiously.
"Ms. Smith, are you available right now? Gerhard would like to speak with you."
In the end, he was still my own flesh and blood. I couldn’t bring myself to refuse him.
"Mom, where have you been? Dad and I couldn’t find you. Were you mad because of the anniversary? We didn’t mean to ignore you. I miss you so much. Can you come back?"
I lowered my gaze, concealing the emotions in my eyes, and replied in the calmest voice I could muster.
"Didn’t your dad tell you? I’ve divorced him. I’m not your mother anymore. You won’t have a useless mother like me anymore."
Upon hearing this, Gerhard panicked, his voice breaking with emotion.
"No, I only want you as my mom. I know I was wrong. Please forgive me. I only want you, Mom."
It was impossible to remain unaffected by the pleading of my own child, but I had already made up my mind to leave. There was no turning back now.
Suppressing the emotions threatening to rise, I said softly, "But Gerhard, I don’t want you anymore. I don’t want your father either."
I ended the call without giving him a chance to respond.
Dad raised an eyebrow as he overheard. "Gerhard?"
I nodded, not wanting to delve into the topic further. "Dad, let’s eat."
For the next few days, I focused all my energy on work, with little room in my mind for anything else. My family was all I could think about—there was no space left for anything regarding the Brown family.
Gradually, I was able to push the Brown father and son from my mind, even the pain they had caused me, as the satisfaction and exhaustion from my work filled the void.
This continued for four months after the divorce.
One day, I accompanied Dad to another city for a client meeting, only to find out that the client was a friend of Shawn Brown’s.
He recognized me, and though his eyes lingered on me and Dad with a curious look, he said nothing.
It wasn’t until the meeting was almost over, and Shawn Brown pushed open the door to the room, that I realized his friend had assumed Dad was my benefactor.
Shawn blocked the door, his eyes red with fury, and demanded,
"Is this why you suddenly divorced me and disappeared? Is it because of this man?"
