The second we got out of the car and stepped into the villa, Chloe appeared holding a screaming Emma, looking all fragile and helpless as she turned to Alexander.
"Alexander, Emma's been crying for you. I..."
But this time, Alexander didn't take the kid. Instead, he had the nanny take her upstairs.
While Chloe stared in confusion, he threw his phone at her.
"Apologize." His sudden anger caught her completely off guard.
She glanced down at the screen, her eyes flickering with jealousy.
Alexander saw me standing there stone-faced and lost his patience.
"Victoria is my wife. Stop sending shit that could be misunderstood."
Maybe it was the first time she'd seen Alexander this pissed, because Chloe's eyes immediately filled with tears.
She started this whole waterworks performance, sniffling with wounded pride.
"Sorry, Ms. Whitmore. I chose my words poorly. Please forgive me."
I looked up, meeting her gaze with pure ice.
I walked over and grabbed her chin with one hand, my voice dripping with contempt.
"Ms. Whitmore? If you can't manage to say 'Mrs. Sterling,' I don't mind having someone pry your mouth open." I leaned down, staring down at her.
"Keep your wiles to yourself around me, or I'll show you exactly how many people who forgot their place are rotting in the Whitmore family dungeons."
When I shoved her away, Chloe went pale as a ghost, swaying on her feet.
Alexander frowned at the scene and stepped in.
"Alright, that's enough. I'll get you and Emma your own place. Don't come here or to the family estate anymore."
He stood up, deliberately blocking my view and shielding Chloe behind him.
Chloe stared at him in disbelief, tears streaming down her face, but she still left with Emma.
But the next evening, something I never expected happened.
Chloe was on her knees in front of me, sobbing hysterically.
Alexander stood beside her, his face just as dark.
"Mrs. Sterling, I was wrong! I shouldn't have interfered with your lives, but Emma's innocent—she's just a child! Please, I'm begging you, let her go!"
I frowned, my expression ice-cold.
"Watch your damn mouth. Who the hell are you to pin this on me?"
Alexander stepped forward, looking more grim than I'd ever seen him.
"The kidnapper's phone was traced back to your family butler's son!" He closed his eyes, barely containing his rage.
"Victoria, the child is innocent. Give her back to me, and I won't press charges."
I stared at him in disbelief. "Is that really what you think of me?"
Maybe my expression was too heartbroken, Alexander looked away.
"I have to believe the evidence."
In that moment, I realized our five-year marriage had been nothing but a joke.
It took me five years to understand that some people, some things, should never have been part of my life.
I pulled myself together and looked at him with complete composure.
"Alexander, in the end, you still let me down."
Then, while he stared at me in confusion, I spoke again, my voice flat.
"If I wanted someone gone, I wouldn't be stupid enough to use people on my own side."
I walked over to the trembling Chloe. "Even tigers don't eat their own cubs. You're so ruthless."
I looked at the two of them standing side by side, my voice full of mockery.
After I left, I called my assistant.
"Prepare divorce papers for Alexander and me. Also," I closed my eyes, and when I opened them, only coldness remained, "pull all Whitmore investments from Sterling Corp domestically. Withdraw from overseas joint ventures. Contact the Coopers—I want Sterling stock to hit rock bottom within three days."
After hanging up, I noticed the rain outside had stopped.
"Alexander, I'm going to show you what regret really feels like."
