When I got home, Kevin was sitting on the couch smoking.
I frowned and walked over, putting out his cigarette.
"Smoking this much? Trying to choke me and the baby to death?" I tossed the butt in the trash.
Kevin's head snapped up, then slowly dropped to stare at my stomach.
His voice was clearly shaking.
"Baby?" His eyes lit up with stunning joy. "Mine?"
My face went dark. "Well whose else would it be?"
That's when Kevin finally snapped back to reality, quickly pulling me down to sit next to him.
His warm hands slowly moved to my belly, touching so gently.
Like I was made of precious glass.
Watching him do that, something in my chest went soft.
Kevin pulled me into his arms.
After what felt like forever, just when I was getting antsy, I felt something wet dripping onto my neck.
I stared at him in shock. "Kevin, are you crying?"
His whole body went stiff, his voice all choked up. "I'm not crying!"
I laughed softly.
"Okay, okay. You're not crying."
The next day, my lawyer delivered the signed divorce papers.
When I opened the papers and saw that achingly familiar signature, it suddenly hit me: we'd both moved on to completely different lives.
Time flew by, and before I knew it, it was our daughter's first month celebration.
I named her I named her Joy – hoping she'd live up to it, that happiness would follow her wherever life took her.
On her celebration day, both Grandpa Sterling and Alexander showed up.
Looking at the baby in her blanket, Grandpa Sterling's eyes got misty.
He pulled me aside and talked for ages, mostly just expressing guilt.
Alexander walked over to me.
He'd gone back to that familiar, elegantly composed look I remembered.
Except now there was always a hint of sadness in his expression.
"Grandpa Sterling said you sent Chloe and Emma overseas?" I looked at him, feeling nothing like I used to.
Alexander nodded, looking down.
"Yeah, I'll send the child support I owe each month. Beyond that, there's nothing I can do."
I got what he meant.
Chloe was the type who'd use her own kid.
If he'd let Emma stay close, the child would've become Chloe's favorite tool.
After a moment of silence, I turned to leave.
"Victoria," Alexander handed me a small velvet jewelry box. "It's a Saint Christopher pendant from the cathedral. For protection and peaceful sleep. Good for your health."
I instinctively took it and smiled at him.
"Thanks. I appreciate it."
Seeing the peaceful look on my face, Alexander felt sharp, constant pain.
It hurt so much he unconsciously hunched over.
On the drive home, it started drizzling again.
But this time, I wasn't waiting for gray skies.
I was waiting for a rainbow.
And at the end of that rainbow, I saw Kevin's smiling eyes.
