I'd barely relaxed when Luna's message popped up.
"Bitch, you think you can ruin me? I won't let you get away with this!"
"You're nowhere near as pretty as me, so how the hell did you land a guy with more money than mine?"
"Just so you know, Patrick will be mine eventually."
That's when I finally got what she was really after.
She wasn't even into Patrick - she just couldn't stand seeing me happy.
The next second, all those messages got deleted.
In our chat, only my responses were left:
"You know damn well what you were doing with that photo."
"If you think Leo's not good enough, then break up with him."
"Can't be a whore and a saint at the same time."
Looking at it now, it made me seem like I was the one stirring up trouble, like I was the aggressor.
My head was spinning.
Sure enough, a minute later, she screenshot our edited conversation and posted it in the group chat.
The group exploded.
"Wynne, what's your problem? Why are you always going after Luna?"
"Yeah, are you just jealous she's prettier than you?"
"Toxic femininity at its finest. I have no idea what Patrick sees in a psycho like you."
Luna even had the audacity to fake-defend me.
"Guys, don't be so harsh. She's still a girl, after all."
That just made all the guys feel even more protective of her.
Leo was the worst, absolutely tearing into me.
I quickly typed back: "She deleted her messages. That's not what really happened."
My head was pounding.
Everything had moved so fast, I hadn't saved the complete conversation.
I tried to explain more, but then I realized I'd been muted.
The person who muted me? Patrick.
Half an hour later, the front door slammed open.
Patrick grabbed me by the hair and yanked me up without warning.
Then he slapped me across the face.
"Why are you so fucking evil? Do you have to destroy people to be happy?"
The slap left me dizzy and disoriented.
Patrick's face was twisted with rage, his chest heaving.
Patrick was actually the perfect boyfriend on paper.
Emotionally stable, good-looking, owned a gym that pulled in millions a year...
This was the first time he'd ever laid a hand on me. And it was for Luna.
Once I came to my senses, I used every ounce of strength I had and slapped him right back.
Those two slaps seemed to snap us both back to reality.
Patrick slumped onto the couch across from me, chain-smoking.
That's when I noticed the lipstick stain on his collar.
I suddenly asked, "You went to see her just now?"
Patrick froze.
"Yeah, she and Leo got into another fight. That asshole even hit her. What a piece of shit."
I let out a bitter laugh.
Patrick's smile turned nasty. "You're different. You deserved it."
I stared him down.
Patrick didn't look guilty at all. If anything, his eyes got even more tender when he talked about Luna.
"Luna's delicate - she can't handle being hit. She's been through so much these past few days. You need to buy her something nice to make up for it."
"She's been wanting this Chanel bag. You should get it for her."
He shoved his phone in my face.
I looked at the screen. Holy shit - thirty-five thousand dollars.
He really thought I was some kind of ATM.
Patrick had always known my mom left me money when she died.
He just never knew exactly how much.
He'd asked before.
But I never told him.
The lesson I learned from my mom was clear: never reveal your true financial situation to anyone.
Not even your partner.
