Leo let out a long breath, his face showing sudden enlightenment.
Like someone who'd been hanging in mid-air too long, finally finding a way down and desperate to take it.
Leo took Luna's hand. "Baby, I'm sorry I doubted you."
Luna sobbed in his arms, looking absolutely heartbroken.
The others looked at me with even more disgust.
Patrick was about to come at me again.
Suddenly, the door burst open.
A group of uniformed cops rushed in. "Nobody move!"
Reed, my lawyer, followed behind them.
"Ms. Danning, I'm sorry I'm late."
Patrick looked confused seeing how the lawyer addressed me. "Ms. Danning?"
I ignored him, letting Reed help me up as we headed for the door.
The cops arrested everyone there.
"You beat her up this bad - you clearly don't give a damn about the law."
Someone started yelling.
"Officer, this was just a mutual fight at most."
"Mutual fight? One woman against a whole group of you?"
"Yeah, look, I'm all bruised up too. She was picking on me." Luna cried as she explained.
The cops obviously didn't buy their bullshit.
"I'm not blind, lady. She's bleeding from her head while you've got a bunch of big guys protecting you, and you're saying she was picking on you?"
Luna was speechless.
But she really had been hit.
The bruises were just in places that weren't visible.
She couldn't exactly lift her clothes to show the cops right then and there.
Plus it only hurt a little - by the time they got to the hospital, the marks would probably be gone.
This was her first taste of having grievances with no way to voice them.
The guys tried to back her up, saying I really did hit her.
The cops' faces got even more serious.
"Your testimony doesn't count - you're accomplices. And even if she did hit back, that's self-defense."
Patrick and his crew were grinding their teeth in frustration, but there was nothing they could do.
Police lights flashed outside, illuminating my blood-stained face.
As Luna was led past me, she whispered threats:
"Don't get too cocky. We'll just get fined a little money."
"But you're different - after this mess, Patrick is gonna hate your guts."
Sure enough, just like Luna said.
My injuries were only classified as minor.
Plus that whole group used the excuse that Patrick and I were engaged, claiming it was a domestic dispute.
The cops had no choice but to fine them and let them go.
My lawyer pushed up her glasses:
"Ms. Danning, you were too impulsive this time."
"That group clearly knows the law and human anatomy."
"They hit you in places that wouldn't cause serious damage."
I clenched my fists in frustration.
My injuries looked bad but were only considered minor medically.
I still wasn't satisfied. "But my head..."
My head was wrapped in thick bandages - Patrick had done that.
Reed sighed regretfully:
"Unfortunately, since you've been living together for years, it was handled as a domestic dispute."
At those words, I felt like all the blood in my body turned cold.
How fucking unfair.
Just because I dated someone, it was like I'd been sold to Patrick.
Even when I got beaten up, the case just got brushed aside.
"Is there really no other way?" I kept pushing.
"There is. The law exists to protect human rights."
Reed's eyes seemed to shine.
Behind her glasses, her eyes reflected a cold, sharp light.
She pulled up the hospital diagnostic report, pointing at the words "mild concussion."
"According to the Domestic Violence Prevention Act, patterns of domestic violence can constitute abuse."
I suddenly understood what my lawyer was getting at.
