I let out a sharp, mocking laugh. "Repay kindness with harm?" I echoed. "That's rich. Sounds more like your style—just another desperate attempt to get back what's mine."
His fury was practically radiating through the phone. "Who the hell taught you to be so naive? The Montclairs sold you out, but I was the one who strapped you to that operating table. You really think I'd let you walk away and live some fairy-tale ending?"
He was teetering on the edge, seconds from snapping.
Meanwhile, I was bored.
"What's your point, Jasper?" I drawled. "What do you even get out of this? You expect me to just forget everything? Pretend you didn't destroy my life and let you walk away scot-free?"
His voice rose, thick with rage and desperation. "You think you're so clever, huh? You caught AIDS just to run from me? You ruined your own damn life!"
That nearly sent me over the edge. I laughed until my ribs ached.
"AIDS? You actually believe that?" I wheezed, struggling to catch my breath. "You think I'd go that far? And where exactly was I supposed to find an AIDS patient to pull this off?" I sighed dramatically. "The test results?" Another chuckle escaped me. "Jasper, come on. I had them printed for five bucks—just to screw with you."
Silence.
Then, on the other end of the line—he snapped.
"Listen here—" Jasper's voice was a full-blown roar. "No matter what, this old dog still has teeth. You might be out of the country, but I'll hire someone to put a bullet in you!"
I sighed.
Predictable.
"Jasper," I cut in, almost feeling sorry for him. "Where's your head at? You clearly lost your mind along with your money." I let the words hang before delivering the final blow. "I'm reborn, remember? I've got the $10 million you handed me, and I know exactly what's happening with Crescent Ventures. Why wouldn't I invest on my own?"
Dead silence.
Then—"You what?!"
I smirked. "You heard me." Leaning back, I savored the moment. "Already put that money to work. Stocks, mutual funds, Crescent Ventures—I'm in. And it's paying off. So just so we're clear, I'm not the same pushover you thought you could manipulate back in that hotel. I've got more cash than you did before your little bankruptcy meltdown. I've got bodyguards. I live in a gated luxury community. So go ahead, send your hired gun. But honestly?" I paused for effect. "Good luck with that."
Then—click.
I ended the call.
Tossed the phone aside.
Let out a long breath.
Even if Jasper tried something—after my plastic surgery, he wouldn't recognize me anyway.
No way was I spending the rest of my life looking like a carbon copy of my twisted twin sister or my so-called parents.
Weeks passed.
No assassination attempts.
Instead, whispers started circulating about the Montclairs' downfall.
Catherine, just like in my past life, died from a post-op infection.
Jasper, completely outplayed, spiraled into madness.
He blamed everything on Alaric and Isabella—my parents, the ones I'd already disowned. He tortured them, turned their lives into a nightmare, until their bodies were eventually found dumped in the wilderness.
Not a pretty sight.
Frankly, I didn't bother with the details.
Meanwhile, I kept my hands clean.
Hired a lawyer. Filed a formal report against Jasper. Took it straight to the authorities—as a grieving family member, of course.
I sued him for Alaric and Isabella's murders. Threw in fraudulent intent. Filed malpractice claims for Catherine's botched surgery.
The legal system moved fast.
Jasper Sterling was convicted of murder and sentenced to death.
As for his precious, delicate sister, Eloise?
She cracked under the pressure. Slipped into depression. Died soon after.
And me?
Well…
I'm sitting pretty in my new home.
Money in the bank.
Every last person who betrayed me? Gone.
Life's looking pretty damn good.
