Then it hit me—I'd been reborn.
The day Jasper Sterling announced his search for his benefactor had come again, just like before.
Back then, Cathy had stolen my token and, with our parents, eagerly schemed to take my place and meet him. But I'd shut that down fast.
"He's not looking for me to marry me," I'd told them. "He's looking for me because my blood type matches his sister's. She's dying, and she needs an organ transplant. The only reason he wants me is to use me as a spare parts bank."
Cathy had just laughed. "Perfect! Our bodies belong to our parents anyway, right? You're just repaying them by helping Mom and Dad live the good life. That's what family's for, isn't it?"
Before I could argue, they'd knocked me out cold and shipped me straight to the Sterlings.
The next six months were a blur. On paper, I was married to Jasper Sterling.
In reality? I was nothing more than a living organ farm for his sister, Eloise.
And not long after, I died from a post-surgery infection.
Meanwhile, my family thrived—living in luxury, soaking up every perk Jasper gave them, climbing the social ladder right over my corpse.
The memory dragged me under like a riptide, pulling me back into that helpless, suffocating cycle.
A sharp slap across my cheek jerked me back to the present.
"Hey, Cassandra! I'm talking to you. Are you deaf or just stupid?" Cathy sneered, her eyes flashing with annoyance.
Right then, I made my choice.
I forced a smile, smoothing my face into blissful ignorance. "I'm just so happy," I gushed. "You're right, Cathy. I was the one who saved Jasper back then."
I retreated to my room with the token—the sapphire crest brooch Jasper had given me.
"This is it. He told me it was a falling star. Back then, I thought he was just being poetic, but now I get it… he meant every word. I had no idea he's been searching for me all this time…"
I remembered how Cathy had obsessed over this moment in my past life, how her greed had glittered at the thought of marrying into wealth.
I let out a dreamy sigh, putting on my best lovesick act. "That must be why he's in such a hurry to find me now. He's probably at that age where he's ready to settle down, right? He definitely wants to marry me."
Cathy's eyes lit up with excitement—exactly as I'd planned.
Hook, line, and sinker.
