"This belongs to your sister, Cathy! What the hell are you doing? What if you break it? Do you even have the money to fix it?"
Cathy's jaw dropped.
Even she hadn't seen that coming.
I leaned back, my voice steady but icy. "Cathy, I know you've always helped yourself to my things. But not this time. This is my chance. My future."
The room went dead silent.
I let the tension thicken before muttering under my breath, "We may look alike, but what's mine will always stay mine."
That was all it took.
Cathy's face twisted into a slow, smug grin. "You're right. We do look the same. But you?" She tilted her head, oozing fake pity. "You're so dull. Even if you married Jasper, how long do you think he'd last before getting bored? Face it—I'm the better choice."
She wasn't finished. Not by a long shot.
Turning to our parents, she pounced. "Think about it, Mom, Dad! It's been over ten years since that rich man last saw Cassie. All we have to do is say I was the one at Grandma's house. Who'd ever know the difference?"
She let the idea sink in, then sweetened the pot.
"And let's be real—you've never been close to Cassie. If she actually married him, do you really think she'd lift a finger for you? But me? You know I'd take care of you."
My parents barely hesitated before exchanging a glance and nodding.
No guilt. No remorse. Not even a second thought.
I wasn't shocked.
If Alaric and Isabella hadn't always put Cathy first, I never would've been the one shipped off to Grandma's. I never would've been the one to save Jasper. And I sure as hell wouldn't have been treated like some disposable pawn.
Even though this was exactly what I'd planned, I let my face crumple, my voice cracking. "Mom, Dad… how could you? You've always given Cathy everything—my clothes, my toys, everything. But this is different! This is my life! I'm your daughter too—why are you doing this to me?"
Alaric didn't flinch.
Instead, he shoved the brooch into Cathy's hands and smacked me across the face.
"Have you lost your damn mind? When have we ever favored her over you? We fed you! Clothed you! You think we did all that just for her?"
The slap burned against my cheek.
I swallowed the fury rising in my throat.
Because this time, I wasn't fighting for their love.
This time, I was playing to ruin them.
