                    ~ ENRIQUE ~
The crawler had finally been moved to the dungeons, with hopefully a prison secure enough to hold him. Royce, Raihana, Delsanra and I formed it together. Seeing them perform spells, I almost felt I understood them. I was told I could perform magic without the need of spells.
That is something I have yet to try when my mind isn’t consumed by turmoil. Now we see if the cell holds.
However, aside from hissing and shrieking, we got nothing out of him. Raihana suggested we wait for Kataleya to wake up since Azarakh has conversed with her before, but that she will continue to try to get it to speak.
I want to head back to the hospital but there’s still so much pending.
“Jose, get the car. I need to visit the family of the deceased,” I order.
“Alpha Enrique. I need your permission to allow me to question Hugo, with magic, if needed. He has lied, or at least kept things from you and us,” Raihana says.
I frown, “What do you mean?”
“You don’t need the Ash Stone to control the guardsmen, it only enhances your powers.”
How is that even possible? Hugo was not the only source of that information.
I frown. “No, that can’t be right. A witch, the only one we have on this island, she said the same thing…”
“Then we should bring her in for questioning, too. Listen, we learned some things tonight, and after what’s happened, I think you should listen to what we are saying. This could help Kat,” she says quietly.
“Hugo is someone who has worked for my family for years. He is-”
“Then do you know that he is a guardsman of a king before you?” Raihana asks sharply.
My heart races as I stare at her.
That can’t be true…
My wolf is restless as I stare at her. “Is that where Kataleya learned about what the Ash Stone might be, if that’s even true?” I question quietly.
“Yes, but I don’t know, not until I’ve questioned him,” Raihana says.
“And can I ask how you found out about Hugo? Where did you two go?” Liam cuts in, looking more serious than I’ve ever seen him. His eyes sharp.
“Not now, Liam,” Raihana says dismissively, but one glance at the man tells me this is not over.
“Fine, we’ll talk later,” he says grimly. Raihana glances at him before she exhales and nods.
“Alright. Enrique, I need your go-ahead to question both Hugo and Haala.”
I hesitate. I don’t really want anyone on my island being interrogated by a foreigner. Glancing at Antonio and Benigno, I cross my arms. “Is that true that the Ash Stone is not needed to control you?”
They exchange looks before bowing their heads. “It is true, Mi Rey,” Benigno says. “What we did was to protect you.”
Lies upon fucking lies. “I hate when people take shit into their own hands. I’m going to go take care of something, but when I’m back, I want answers.” I snarl, glaring at my two guardsmen. I then look at Raihana. “Fine. You may question Hugo and Haala, but I want a full fucking report. If anyone tries to hide shit from me, you’re gone. Antonio, stay here and monitor everything, and you will give me the answers I need.”
They exchange looks. “Yes, Mi Rey.”
“And for the love of Puerto Rico, do not leave that crawler alone.”
Raihana nods, although she doesn’t look impressed. “I don’t need that attitude. This is my home. You are the guest, and you will obey me.” I snarl.
What she said may be true, but even Madre made me promise that I would not awaken that power. Why?
I expect her to argue, but her eyes simply simmer as she nods. “Understood,” she answers through gritted teeth.
“Good. I’ll be back soon. Antonio, I want a full report,” I command and leave the packhouse.
“Yes, Mi Rey.”
I glance around, spotting Diego. “Diego, you’re driving. I got shit to do,” I say as I motion to a car one of the omegas has brought forward.
“Yes, Alpha,” he says, getting in.
“Jose, tablet.”
Unquestioning, he glances at one of the members who are doing an assessment of the damage and takes their tablet from them. Taking it from him, I get into the car and nod at Diego.
“To Andres Garcia’s house, now,” I command before I log into my account and get past security and pull up the infrastructure files of the pack territory and get to work.
The crawlers seem to understand how the power supply works, and they targeted that. That or they had help. I’m not ruling anything out.
We need to build secure barriers around all power lines and fast. Something I’m certain I can do myself if needed.
I work until we get to the first house, and keeping the tablet with me, I get out of the car. “Wait here,” I order Diego as I walk to the door.
I take a small breath as I ring the doorbell and it’s opened by Andrea Garcia, Andres’ sister.
She blushes, “A- Alpha Enrique! To what do we owe the pleasure?”
“I wish it was good news. Is any of your family here?” I know their father has passed.
“Yes…”
“Call them. I want to speak to all of you together.”
She nods as she turns. “Madre! Alpha is here.”
Moments later, a woman appears and I can instantly see she isn’t in the best of health, and Andrea goes to help her.
“Welcome to our home, Alpha Please, come sit,” the elder woman says. “Andrea, where are your manners?”
“Thank you…” I say. I’ve done this before, and every single time I wonder how do I start? How do I tell them their loved one is dead? I sit down opposite the woman and the elder one is watching me intently.
“Why are you here, Alpha? Forgive my pertinence, but it is not usual of you to visit unless you bear news.”
Our eyes meet and I nod. “You are right. I am here with some grave news. You may have heard tonight that the crawlers appeared during the Luna ceremony.”
Their faces fall. “Yes, Alpha. Is my Andres alright? He hasn’t answered our calls or mind-link,” his mother whispers, but I can tell she already knows from the way her heart is racing and her face has paled.
“I’m sorry, Tia, but he was killed.”
Andrea gasps as the elder woman closes her eyes, her hands trembling, her heart thundering.
“Tell me, Alpha, did he die fighting?” she asks, opening her eyes that are filled with pain as her daughter breaks into tears.
I nod. “He died in battle, protecting our people,” I whisper as I reach over and take her hand. No mother should have to see her son buried…
She nods. “Then he died a hero. I will not mourn.” Her lips tremble and I look down, trying to control my own emotions. I have to be strong for my people.
“Yes, he is a hero. For us, there is no better way to go, but it’s alright to mourn. Until we meet him again,” I say quietly.
She nods yet remains strong. “For me, that will be soon,” she says sadly, making her daughter hug her tightly before she pulls out her phone.
“I am sorry, Tia.”
“Thank you, Alpha.”
She stands and silently leaves the room, leaving her daughter, who is sobbing quietly as she texts away frantically behind. I should take my leave.
“I’m sorry for your loss. If there is anything you need help with, your pack is here for you.”
I stand up and Andrea jumps up too, her hands clenching as she glares at me.
“Nothing can bring him back. He was yet to find his mate!” she exclaims, anger and hurt in her eyes before she holds her phone out, but she waves it too fast for me to catch anything on it. “They said you did nothing! You stood there as hell broke loose! You shouldn’t be our alpha! There is something wrong with you!” She breaks into sobs.
I look at her. She must have reached out to someone who was there… Her words cut, but not because of the way they’re spoken, but because they are nothing but the truth.
I remain silent. After all, she has not spoken wrongly.
“I will make this right.”
“You can try, but for centuries, the Escarras have brought nothing but pain to us! Be the alpha you pretend to be and actually do some good! Give your title to someone who can take care of us and leave this island!”
“Andrea!”
We both turn to see her mother standing there looking shocked. Andrea runs off sobbing.
“I am sorry for her words, Alpha. If you wish to punish her, I will understand. She was close with her brother.”
I shake my head. “She will not be punished. She is hurt and doesn’t speak wrongly, but I will try my best to protect my people. If I cannot fix things in the next month, I will do as she says.” Because I will fucking win or die trying.
She gives me a sad smile that doesn’t reach her pained eyes and I bow my head, taking my leave. When will I be able to show my people that I am an alpha who will be able to protect his people?
