Arielle's cold indifference didn't dampen Meredith's mood at all.
In fact, she thought gleefully, 'This only makes me even happier.'
"Sis, Lexi's steak and pizza are way better than any restaurant's. You have to try some," Meredith said sweetly, generously sliding a plate of steak and pizza toward Arielle.
Arielle was startled. She thought, 'If Meredith's suddenly being nice to me, something's definitely up. And whatever it is, it's bound to be bad news for me.
'It must be about yesterday when I got into a fight with Phyllis at the school gate. But that alone wouldn't make Meredith act so strangely.'
Suppressing the turmoil in her heart, Arielle pulled out a tissue to wipe her mouth, pushed back her chair, and left the dining room without another word.
Meredith's eyes darkened as she stared at her retreating figure, a sinister smile curling at the corners of her lips.
Arielle walked into the classroom.
As soon as she walked in, every eye in the room locked onto her.
She could sense contempt, scorn, disdain, and even a twisted excitement burning in their stares.
Last night, Mya anonymously posted about Arielle's past online, taking Phyllis's stories and embellishing them with vivid, graphic details to make them sound all the more real.
She exaggerated everything Phyllis had said, painting a convincing and dramatic picture.
The post went up just after midnight.
Many boys, still awake after gaming, happened to see the news as they scrolled through their phones.
With so many of Meredith's admirers at school, the rumors spread rapidly through group chats and social media.
In no time, scandalous rumors about Arielle being promiscuous shot to the top of the campus forum's trending topics.
Seeing Arielle walk into the classroom completely unfazed, Sophia, Olivia, and the others could no longer contain their glee.
As Arielle passed by, Olivia smirked and spoke up. "Raped, knocked up, had an abortion, sleeping around... What a trashy slut."
Arielle froze in her tracks, her icy gaze meeting Olivia's.
Olivia had been itching to teach Arielle a lesson for ages, but never had the chance.
'It's not like I posted those rumors online. I just repeated what everyone else was saying. How is that my fault?' she thought, refusing to admit she'd said anything wrong.
Chin jutting out defiantly, she snapped, "What are you staring at?"
The air between Arielle and Olivia crackled with tension.
Olivia was certain Arielle wouldn't dare do anything to her.
'It's not like I mentioned her name,' she thought smugly.
Arielle said coldly, "Say that again, and I'll end you."
Olivia snapped her mouth shut, though inwardly seething.
Olivia cursed inwardly, 'That bitch, how dare she threaten me?
'Just wait and see if you'll still be smiling later.'
Arielle strode to her seat and yanked the chair back violently with one hand. Its legs screeched harshly against the floor.
The whole class felt her rage.
The screech of the chair faded into a brief silence that fell over the classroom.
Eyes met across the classroom as students exchanged silent, knowing glances about the incident.
The girls in the back row, completely unbothered, took out their books and began reading.
It was as if nothing had happened.
Gossip could destroy someone in silence.
It was seen in the news all the time. Some celebrity, unable to withstand the online backlash, would commit suicide.
With just a few keystrokes, these haters online could push a young life into hell, all while reveling in their sick thrill.
The more miserable others became, the happier they were.
Cowardly, weak, and vain, they irresponsibly piled their cruelty onto others' suffering.
She'd endured enough already, she wasn't about to let their malice get to her.
But she wasn't one to take insults lying down. 'If anyone dares to trample on me, I'll make sure they regret it for life,' she thought coldly.
Justin, sitting in the front row, turned around when he saw how calm she was and said with concern, "Don't take it to heart. They just can't keep their mouths shut. Anyone with sense knows those are just rumors."
"Yeah," Arielle murmured softly.
He simply turned around, looked at Arielle, and continued to comfort her, "Looks like the girls in our class don't really like you, maybe it's just because you're too pretty and they're jealous.
"So don't let it stress you out. Once you get into college, you'll have a whole new world waiting for you."
