Melinda's heart swelled with joy at his unusually gentle words.
'He's never been this gentle with me before... Could it be he's finally accepting me?' Melinda wondered, her heart fluttering between hope and doubt.
Soon, the staff served lunch at the table.
At the table, Melinda barely touched her own food, busily serving dishes to Sally and William instead.
"This fish is your favorite. Try it and see how it tastes," Melinda said gently.
Seeing her dutiful daughter-in-law, Sally beamed with delight and said warmly, "Don't spoil him so much! You've been so busy serving us, now make sure you eat something yourself."
"Yes, Mom," Melinda replied gently, taking her seat to eat.
"Does it taste good? Is it to your liking?" Melinda asked tenderly.
William gave a slight nod and responded with a soft, noncommittal "Yeah."
Even this cold response from William was enough to make Melinda happy.
Before, he used to ignore her completely.
It was because William suspected that Melinda was behind his daughter's disappearance.
William had been investigating her all this time.
Melinda thought, utterly unfazed, 'Yeah, it was me, so what?
'He's got no proof, nothing he can do to me.
'Once that little bitch is dead, his heart will finally return to me.'
Seeing the young couple interacting, Sally turned to Melinda and asked, "You must feel a bit cooped up staying home alone. If there's anything you'd like to do or try, just let us know. We'd be happy to give you some suggestions."
Sally wanted Melinda to get out and socialize more, hoping she would shine. She believed that once her son saw her in this new light, he would naturally grow fond of her.
'A woman who spends all her time cooped up at home knows nothing about the outside world,' Sally admonished.
Sally said, "How could you possibly feel at ease cooped up like this?"
"Let alone trying for a baby," Sally added with a sigh.
Melinda's expression froze for a moment. She thought, "Of course, what I want the most is just waiting for William to come home every single day."
"Not really," Melinda replied, "I mostly just play cards with some friends."
William let out a bitter smile. "This is all my fault. If I hadn't lost our daughter, she could've been here to keep you company."
His eyes clouded with sorrow and self-reproach as he spoke, all the while carefully studying Melinda's expression.
Feeling guilty, Melinda quickly averted her eyes, not daring to meet William's gaze.
Though a flicker of panic rose inside her, Melinda forced herself to maintain a calm exterior.
Melinda thought in alarm, 'Why is William suddenly bringing up that little bitch today?'
'Ever since that little bitch went missing, her name became a taboo in this house. No one dared to bring it up.
'Of course he has no idea where that little bitch is.
'That little bitch... she'll be gone soon.'
"Honey," she said softly, "let's not dwell on those unhappy things. Since you're finally home, how about we go shopping later and catch a movie tonight? What do you say?"
Melinda thought, 'Young couples these days love going to the movies. If we can share some romantic moments together, maybe, little by little, my husband will finally open his heart to me.'
Sally chimed in supportively, "Why don't you two go out on a date tonight and enjoy a romantic evening together? I'll stay here for the night, so you can have the evening all to yourselves."
She was secretly hoping her son and daughter-in-law would finally consummate their marriage so she could have a grandchild soon.
Sally thought in exasperation, 'What was he thinking, bringing up that little girl today, of all days?
'That little girl from who knows where... we don't even know if she's truly a Boone by blood!'
Sally was displeased that her son had mentioned the little girl, but she suppressed her irritation. Quickly changing the subject, she suggested the couple go out for a romantic evening.
William set down his fork, his expression darkening.
"I'm done. Enjoy the rest of your meal," he said coolly. With that, he pushed back his chair to leave.
Melinda noticed the change in her husband's expression.
Panic surged through Melinda.
Melinda frantically grabbed his sleeve, her voice trembling with desperation as she pleaded, "Darling, please don't go. Stay with me, okay? I know you still miss her... How about we have a baby?"
