The idea barely formed in her mind when Alexander let out a low chuckle. "I might not be the greatest player, Nathaniel," he said, his fingers hovering over the chessboard. "But if you keep holding back, I won't take it as kindness."
Nathaniel Graves flashed a knowing smile. "It's been months since my last proper game. Consider this my warm-up round."
Alexander snorted, deliberately ignoring the obvious lie.
Truth be told, he was formidable. The match stretched over fifteen intense minutes before he finally conceded defeat - by a single pawn's advantage.
Rather than frustration, Alexander felt exhilaration. This was the first time in years someone had genuinely challenged him. "Again," he demanded, already resetting the pieces.
Nathaniel obliged without hesitation.
This time, Nathaniel played with ruthless precision. Alexander's eyebrows shot up at the aggressive opening move. "That's more like it," he murmured appreciatively.
Nathaniel merely smiled. "Just keeping you on your toes, Mr. Whitmore."
The truth was, Alexander hadn't enjoyed losing this much in decades. Each defeat only fueled his competitive spirit.
By the third match, Alexander slammed his palm on the table. "No more kid gloves! I may be old, but I'm not senile yet."
Nathaniel held up both hands in mock surrender. "You misunderstand me completely, sir."
Alexander waved him off, laser-focused on the board.
Predictably, he lost again.
With deliberate calm, he placed his king on its side. "Well played," he conceded. Then, raising his voice to the gathered spectators, "Anyone else care to try? I'm not asking you to beat him - just make the bastard work for it."
