Fast forward to the present and I have a healthy mate. I'm also the proud father of a little boy, Jaxon. He's only a week old but he's already wreaking havoc in my life. I wouldn't change it for anything though.
He looks like I did when I was a baby, but he has a lot of his mother's mannerisms. I already love him so much and it's always amazing to me that I helped make him.
"Everything's good over here. How is everything over there?"
"We're good. Zach misses you a lot, but I think he's getting used to only seeing you every once in a while."
"I miss that little kid too. We might come visit in a little while. I want to spend some time with my mate and pup, but we'll be down there soon."
"You don't need to rush. Zach is having a great time being an older brother. He's so good with Taylor, it's adorable seeing them together."
"How's Ryder handling everything?" I'm honestly curious to see how he is coping with his first daughter.
"He absolutely adores her. She's his little princess. I can already tell that she's going to be a daddy's girl. He loves spoiling her rotten."
"I figured he would," I say as I chuckle lightly. Elizabeth laughs and I hear some slight commotion on her side. Elizabeth yells at Zach for something and I chuckle again. She returns to the phone a few seconds later sounding worried.
"Sorry Carter, I think I have to go. Zach thought it would be a good idea to try to carry Taylor around the house and he bumped into a couch. She's laughing, but I just want to make sure that she's ok."
"I understand. I'll talk to you soon. Call me if you need anything." She bids me goodbye before she hangs up.
I walk into Jaxon's room and a faint smile spreads across my lips as I watch him sleep. He looks so relaxed. I walk closer and place a hand on his back. My hand completely covers his back and I'm reminded again how small he is.
He stirred slightly, but he didn't wake up. I lean down closer to him.
"Do you know why you sleep so well at night my little boy? It's because you know you are loved." I kiss his cheek before I pull the covers up around him and make sure the baby monitor is on. I would hear him even if the baby monitor wasn't on because of my advanced hearing, but Jessica freaks out whenever it's not on.
I turn off the light and leave the door open a little before I walk down stairs to the kitchen.
I see Jessica pull out a batch of cookies from the oven. I walk over to her and try to take one, but she smacks my hand away.
"These aren't for you."
"Why can't I have one?" I pout. She rolls her eyes at me.
"If I let you have one, you're going to end up eating all of them." I grin sheepishly.
"You know me so well." She rolls her eyes again and I'm glad that she is finally back to normal. A year ago, she wasn't like that.
"Of course I do. I'm your mate. Now get out of here so I can finish making my baked goods." I lean down and peck her lips gently and I use that time that she's distracted to grab a cookie. I move away with a sly grin and shove the cookie into my mouth.
Jessica glares at me playfully before pushing me towards the door. I hold up my hands in surrender and walk out of the room. I walk outside before shifting into my wolf. I shake my fur out before I start jogging. I pick up my pace as I continue to run before I come to a sudden stop. I let out a long, happy howl before I start running again.
This is the good life.
Elizabeth's POV
"Zach, what were you thinking? You could have gotten hurt, or you could have hurt Taylor!" I'm trying not to yell at him because I know how sensitive he is. He hates when he makes Ryder or I mad. He does his best to make us happy and I know his intentions were pure.
"I was just trying to help!" he cries. His eyes are misty and his voice shakes. I sigh before I lean down to his level. I push back his curly hair and wipe the tears that spill out of his eyes.
"I know baby, but next time, you should get your dad or I. You're too little to carry Taylor by yourself."
"I didn't want to stop your phone call with Uncle Carter! Taylor was crying so I was going to walk around with her like you and daddy do," he says as he sniffles. I pull him close to me and rub his back.
"It's ok. You don't need to cry. Thank you for your help, but just remember what I said, ok?" He nods his head quickly and bites his bottom lip to keep in his little sobs. I give him a small smile before I ruffle his hair.
