Angus looked at me with that infuriatingly casual arrogance. "Even if I marry Hallie, I can still keep you around outside the family."
Like he was doing me some huge favor. Like being his side piece was some kind of honor.
A white-hot knife of pain twisted in my chest. For the first time, I stood my ground. "I won't be your mistress."
His face darkened instantly. "This is my hundredth wish. Isn't this what you wanted?"
I had wanted to fulfill all one hundred wishes. But agreeing to stay meant I could never go home. My silence was answer enough.
The shock on his face was almost comical—nobody ever said no to Angus Davidson. His expression contorted between disbelief and rage before he finally snarled, "Cut the crap. I'm not playing these push-pull games with you."
He stepped closer, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. "Last chance. Walk away now, and you'll never get another one."
As I fled, the whispers followed me down the street.
"That's her, right? The girl from that leaked video. Total nympho, I heard."
A stranger grabbed me without warning, his hands roaming. "Why the act? You weren't shy in that porno."
I shoved him off with a scream and bolted home, slamming the door so hard the walls shook.
Collapsing onto the couch, I finally shattered.
"Angus, who the hell do you think you are?! What gives you the right?!"
The despair was suffocating. All I wanted was to go home—just to go home.
Since the scandal broke, I'd become a prisoner in my own apartment. I'd been waiting, just waiting, for Angus to make his final wish so I could leave this nightmare behind.
But he wouldn't let go. He kept demanding I become his dirty little secret. And I kept refusing.
We were at a stalemate—him refusing to change his wish, me refusing to surrender.
Then Angus finally snapped. "I buried that scandal. Anyone dumb enough to bring it up again will regret it." His eyes burned into mine. "We both know why you've been clinging to me. So drop the act."
The door shook in its frame when he stormed out.
Not long after, my phone buzzed.
[Fine. New wish. Bring Hallie back to her husband.]
Chaos exploded through the Davidson family. The truth came out in pieces.
Years ago, Hallie had married a Northern crime lord—a man with unlimited power and zero humanity. She'd quickly learned his wealth came with unspeakable brutality. When she escaped, she was barely recognizable—her body a canvas of scars.
Those videos? The crime lord's handiwork.
He'd always known where she was. But in the Northern Continent, even monsters had to follow the law. Until now.
Angus's grandfather had been taken hostage near the Astrait border.
The ransom? Hallie.
Going back meant certain death. The crime lord was infamous for his sick trophies—women's limbs in freezers, heads preserved in glass cases.
So Angus did what he did best—he found a replacement.
Me.
When I saw his message, some stupid, hopeful part of me thought it was an apology.
How naïve.
For Hallie, he'd throw me to the wolves without hesitation. Even if it killed me.
I thought I'd run out of pain. Angus always proved me wrong.
"Fine, Angus. I'll do it. Consider us done."
Before the exchange, Angus pulled me close, his breath warm against my ear. "Once Grandpa's safe, I'll send Barcain's entire police force after you."
His thumb brushed my cheek. "After this, stay away from Hallie. I'll give you a new identity. You'll stay with me. I love you, Rose. You know that."
I nodded along, playing my part.
His eyes lit up—genuinely happy. Not that it mattered. This "101st wish" didn't count anyway.
Gotta hand it to him—Angus spun the sweetest lies to send me to my death. So sweet they made me want to vomit.
The crime lord's men threw me into a basement straight out of a horror movie. Severed limbs littered the floor. Tools of torture hung like macabre artwork.
I didn't want to imagine what they could do.
I didn't have to.
The next day
Angus arrived like a storm, leading a battalion of cops into Northern territory.
The officers just shook their heads. "She's gone. The whole gang cleared out before we got here."
