"It was nice seeing you," I smiled at Emma, who no longer hid behind bookshelves. Jennifer and I left, sighing, "I feel like it gets worse and worse each time we leave."
"Stories like that... they are devastating," she muttered. I went to the passenger side when Jennifer opened the door for me. I froze for a moment staring at her. She just chuckled, "I can't be a gentle-lady?"
"Mhmm," I nodded. I got in and let her close the door for me. Going onto my phone, I saw a video from Jaelynn about the kid's game. I couldn't help but smile.
"What's so good?" Jennifer asked.
Buckling up, I said, "Jaelynn sent me a video of the twins' soccer game."
"Can I see?" She asked.
"Sure," I pulled it up and showed it. She cheered for them, making me smile even bigger. "Jessika is amazing. Jakob and her are the perfect duo. They completely trust each other."
"They're twins, of course, they do," she said, driving, "I used to play. It's nice seeing the next generation getting into it."
Surprised, I asked, "You played?"
"Yep," she said, "my dad is a sports fanatic, so he made me join a sport in school. I chose soccer... well I wanted volleyball but I realized I couldn't just stand there and stare at girls' asses." I laughed at that. I definitely wanted Cassie to do volleyball for that reason. It would have given me an excuse back to then to stare at her. "I heard you weren't a sports person, is that true?"
"I hated sports," I said, leaning the chair back a little, "I was into student government and writing. Cassie was the sportsperson."
"I think I've overheard you say she was a cheerleader," she said, "you must have liked that."
"Shamelessly," I joked, "I loved how tight the outfit was... really showed her off." I remember how I drooled the first time I saw her in it... almost fainted. She pulled into a coffee drive-through and ordered me a matcha latte, "I was craving this so bad. Periods fucking suck."
"I crave french fries on my period," she said, "it's a dangerous craving."
I laughed the entire drive. If I had known how funny Jennifer was, I definitely would have spoken to her more. We related with some things, but it was nice finding things out about her. When you know everything about someone, it sorta gets boring. It's nice to just take some time to learn about something from someone new.
"I hated going to New York," I sipped on my drink, "way too cold during the winter."
"The snow is gorgeous though," she said, "I love how the lights reflect off the snow."
Closing my eyes, I snuggled into the seat. I just felt so relaxed... at peace. It's been so long since I've last had a breather... this was what I really needed. Jennifer put on some soft Jazz, making me smile, "How did you know?"
"Every time a closed case comes around, you listen to this. It's like you try to calm chaos," she said.
"Slow jazz just hits different," I sighed, "I wish my kids liked it more."
"What do they like?"
"Loud pop music," I cringed, "nothing good." She laughed at it, making me giggle a little. Her laugh was interesting. Not too loud nor awkwardly quiet. It was a good noise. Sorta sweet. When we got back to the office, I climbed out and stretched, "Thanks for the ride. I'm heading home now to celebrate a winning team."
"Well, I hope you all have a lot of fun but not too much fun without me," she teased.
"In your dreams," I teased back. As I went back to my car, I stopped and headed back, "Jennifer... I need to ask you something."
She leaned on her car, hands in her pocket, "Yeah?"
Tugging on my sleeve, I cleared my throat, "That night... I have to know... did something actually happen?" My heart was beating a thousand miles per hour.
She tugged on her lip, "You really don't remember?"
"If I did, I wouldn't be asking," I groaned, "look, you're a sweet person and stuff, but I'm married and have kids. If something... if what I think happened, then I want to act as if it never did. My family comes first before anything else... I'm sorry."
She didn't say anything, so I bid her a goodbye. But as I turned to leave, she quickly grabbed my wrist and tugged me back. Before I could react, she kissed me.
Paralyzed...
It's as if I lost the ability to move.
Her hand slid around my waist as she pressed into me...
But...
But I didn't back away.
But I didn't kiss back.
She broke it, staring into my eyes... that when I noticed that her eyes were just as blue as Cassie's. "Does that help?" She muttered.
"What the actual fuck mom!" We both turn to see Jeremiah and Jaelynn standing about five feet away.
