For the last two weeks of Cassie being in the mental facility, we were not allowed to see her.  Something always came up:
'Mrs. Meryl is with her doctor at the moment.'
'Mrs. Meryl is in a group meeting.'
'Mrs. Meryl is having lunch.'
The kids became antsy, waiting to see their mama.  However, yesterday afternoon I received a phone call from Cassie's doctors, saying she would be released today.
Instead of taking the kids with me to see her, I decided to go alone.  A part of me was jumping in excitement to have her be released, however another part was shitting itself.  It's been two weeks since I've spoken with her.... what happened during those two weeks?
Checking in was easy and quick.  When you don't have two young ones being distracted every four seconds, you can get things done faster.  I walked through the halls and got to the check-in, seeing Cassie sitting in one of the velvet chairs.
She was wearing normal clothes; a white shirt with blue jeans.  Her hair was pulled back with an actual hair tie and she was busing herself with the tv.  Once the nurse stamped my wrist, I headed over to her.  She didn't notice me open the door and walk over.  It seemed Harry Potter was on and she was engrossed.  I admired her.  She was calm, happy even.  It was nice seeing her relaxed... especially when I've only seen her in chaos lately.  "Do you think Harry was truly obviously to the fact he was a wizard Antonia?" She asked.
I was taken back but answered, "Well in the movies and the books, it expresses he wasn't completely aware."
"But he must have had a part of him that knew.  He must have felt it," she said, her eyes glued to the movie, "you always feel it when something is off."
What the?
What is she talking about?
"Mrs. Meryls!" Dr. Martin called as he came over. Cassie stood up, smiling at him.
Something felt... off.
"Thank you Dr. Martin. I'm grateful for what you've done for me," Cassie said, shaking his hand.
"I'm happy to help," he told her, shifting his attention to me, "may I speak to you alone Dr. Meryl?" I glanced over to Cassie, but her attention was back on the tv.
"Of course," I said and followed him to another world. Taking a seat across him, I braced myself, "What is wrong?"
He placed a file down and smiled, "Your wife, Cassidy completely changed! She was so cooperative these last two weeks! She participated in every therapy group, went to each of her one-on-one meetings, and even ate everything she was given at meal times. I called you over to discuss the new medicines she is on. She's been reacting well to them, but make sure to keep an eye on her. If she behaves any different, give me a call."
"Behaves different?" I repeated.
"You know; more manic episodes, depressed episodes, talk of suicide and erratic behavior... the usual effects that demonstrates a downward spiral," he said.
But she's already behaving differently.
"Is something the matter Antonia?" He asked.
I played with my shirt but stopped myself. I'm not seventeen anymore, "Are you sure she's alright? Two weeks ago you were telling me that she was too unstable and may never get out of here, and now... you're telling me she's perfectly fine... are you sure?"
"It's the power of family," he said, "Cassidy wanted to get better for you and your children, so she did everything she could. You know how powerful love can be... what it can motivate a person to do. I mean, look at you Antonia... you chose this career for Cassidy, changed yourself for Cassidy, and even dealt with her issues because of the love you have for her."
"I know but... this sudden change it's-" it's not normal for Cassie....
Cassie isn't the type to change like this. It takes years and years for her to stop something. Cassie isn't like me or the kids. When she has a routine... it never changes. There is no possible way she changed every for... us.
"Antonia?" He pulled me from my thoughts.
"Nothing... thank you. I'll look after her and contact you if I see anything wrong," I gathered my things and left with Cassie.
As I drive us home all I could think about was:
"Why can't I accept Cassie is better for us?"
