We've all had our shit storm.
Be it we caused our parents to be late for work and as they were driving us to school, we remembered we also forgot our binder on the kitchen counter.
Some may have it where they got a low score on a test because they forgot that it was even a thing.
My shit storm was having Jennifer show up on the front steps of my home, greet my children as if they were hers and meet my wife.
Now that's a shit storm I wish no one experiences.
"Jessika! Jakob! Hurry up! I got an early meeting!" Today was my turn to take the kids. Cassie and I agreed that a schedule would do us wonders because then it wouldn't feel as if one of us was doing all the work. Jaelynn came down, her bag tossed over her shoulder and hair nicely curled. I knew something special was going on but if she wanted to share, she would. "Jaelynn, make sure you stop by the market when coming home. You're almost out of sanitary napkins," I fixed my cuff.
"How would you know that mom?" She teased.
"You're not the only one who bleeds in this house."
"At least you all have someone!" We turned to see Jakob on the stairs, frowning, "I'm the only man in this house!"
"Man?" I asked and looked at Jaelynn.
"What man? There's no man that I see!" She hopped right in.
"Hey!" He pouted.
Of course Cassie came to his rescue,"Well of course he's a man! He's the sole protector of the house!" She kissed his cheek, which led him to walk down all cocky.
Jessika came tumbling down, "Ew, we don't stand lies in this house mama! Tell him how it is! He's a whiny sniveling baby who can even do multiplication without messing up!"
Jakob was about to pounce, but I cut in, "Being a man has nothing to do about being strong. A man is someone who takes care of his love ones and himself; physically and mentally. Just like a woman. If women can cry, men can. If a man can raise a family on his own, a woman can." I watched as everyone rolled their eyes and groaned. They all hated it when I became a therapist instead of mom.
"Mama, can we have hot dogs tonight?" Jakob asked Cassie.
"As long as you help," she handed him his shoes and Jessika hers.
"But Kayden doesn't help his mom cook," he whined.
"And Kayden is a fat son of a-" "JESSKIA!" Cassie and I yelled in unison.
"Yeah, yeah, yeah!" She grabbed Jakob by the ear and rushed to the door.
Cassie came over to me, wrapping her arms around me and giving me a deep kiss. The kind that made me not wanna go to work. "Come home at a reasonable time please," she said.
"I'll try. Evil never sleeps!"
"Ew, okay nerd," she kissed me again and as I was about to get touchy, Jakob screamed.
"MOM A WOMAN AT THE DOOR IS HERE FOR YOU!"
Cassie and I both stopped and stared at one another. Who the fuck? Walking over, I felt as if everything was ending.
Jennifer stood at the door.
"Good morning Meryl family!" She was chipper, joyous, filled with glee... and I was ready to committed 1st degree murder.
Cassie was the first one to approach. I failed to stop her. "Good morning. My name is Cassidy Meryl, I'm Antonia's wife. Who are you?"
"Oh I'm Jennifer," she shook hands with Cassie, "call me Jenny or Jen. I prefer Jen."
"Well it's nice to meet you Jen!" Cassie was chipper as well... something she has worked so hard to do. "I'm sorry if I'm being rude but... why are you here?"
"Oh Ani and I have to go to the same location today, so she offered to drive me."
As important as what Jennifer said was, I only focused on Cassie's eyes. Immediately they shifted. It was as if her mold had cracked a little. Jennifer calling me by the nickname... I suddenly moved forward, wrapping my arm around Cassie's waist and kissing her ear. As I did that, I whispered, "Cassie, breathe."
The mold that she had spent years perfecting was slowly fixing itself. Her smile became bigger and soft but her eyes... I could see a switch balancing from Cassie to another her we haven't seen in some time.
Not wanting to drag on the conversation with Cassie in this state, I grabbed my keys and said, "I'm sorry Jennifer. I forgot that it was my day to take the kids to school. I can call you an Uber to get to the place."
Jennifer knew. She saw me flip. I was no longer warning or threatening her.
She knew that the moment we got alone, she was going to see a side of me that not even Cassie has witnessed.
