Isabel thought to herself, 'Lady Julia would never fancy my brother, right?'
Julia sneered, "Remember to have your brother dress as a down-and-out scholar. Make him look like he's on his way to the imperial exams. Station him along the road Raelynn must take home tomorrow."
At Julia's words, Isabel and Katherine instantly grasped her scheme.
Julia wanted to use a man to ruin Raelynn's reputation.
Once the scandal spreads, not only would Raelynn be utterly disgraced, but Shawn would likely have no choice but to call off the engagement.
Isabel thought, 'And then, Lady Julia would finally have her chance'
Isabel and Katherine couldn't help but exchange a wary glance.
They saw profound apprehension mirrored in each other's eyes.
Over the years, Julia had grown ever more ruthless in her schemes.
They thought, 'She even plotted that cat incident that offended the noble consort from years ago.
'It was Lady Julia who had deliberately brought it in and released it at the precise moment when the noble consort was passing by.
'Lady Raelynn being reduced to servitude in the imperial palace was Lady Julia's ultimate scheme all along.'
Of course, Isabel and Katherine would never dare breathe a word of these truths to anyone.
They'd have to take these secrets to their graves.
Isabel thought, 'Now Lady Julia is resorting to her old tricks again. This time, she's even devised such a despicable scheme.
'At this rate, it won't be long before Lady Raelynn is completely cast aside by the Duke's estate.
'This time, forget about marrying Lord Shawn. It's hard to say if Lady Raelynn will even survive.'
Clutching the hair ornaments and bracelets in her hands, Katherine bowed in gratitude, then left the house under the cover of night.
Isabel promptly attended to Julia as she retired for the night.
Already weakened by a day filled with ceaseless blows and a chill she had caught, Julia was further enraged by Vania. Now, as exhaustion finally overtook her, she drifted into a deep sleep.
Isabel gazed at Julia's peaceful sleeping face, a swirl of emotions welling up inside her.
Isabel thought, 'Before Lady Raelynn returned, Lady Julia wasn't this extreme.
'Though she could be spoiled sometimes, her heart was never truly bad.
'Back then, Lady Julia wasn't too bad to servants. She was not exactly kind, but at least she didn't make things difficult for us.
'When did Lady Julia become so utterly different?
'It was only after Lady Raelynn returned to the Duke's estate.
'Lady Julia has fallen out of favor for a while, but once she managed to regain the Duke and Duchess's attention and win back their affection, she had become a madwoman. She is utterly ruthless and willing to do whatever it takes to get her way.
'Even so, I couldn't bring myself to resent Lady Raelynn.
'After all, Lady Raelynn is the true victim in this whole identity s
'If not for that wet nurse's mistake years ago, Katherine and I would be serving Lady Raelynn instead.''
Seeing how Lady Raelynn has treated Sienna and Nina these days, Isabel couldn't help but feel a pang of bitterness.
Isabel thought, 'After all, Lady Raelynn would never lay a finger on her servants.
'Unlike Lady Julia, who's now quick to scold and beat Katherine and me at the slightest provocation.
'For now, all I can do is hope Lady Julia gets what she wants soon. Maybe then, servants like us won't have to keep suffering like this.'
Even though Isabel often felt a pang of guilt toward Raelynn, she nonetheless always dutifully carried out Julia's schemes.
On the other side.
The night watchman had long since notified that it was three in the morning.
Shawn returned to the Marquis' estate, his shoulders dusted with snow.
As he hurried toward his own quarters, he suddenly caught a lean and distinguished figure standing beneath the veranda.
Shawn frowned slightly but instantly recognized the person to be Ian, who was his nephew and his fiancée's former fiancé.
Evidently, Ian was still awake. Since he was standing there at this hour, he must be waiting for Shawn to return.
However, though Shawn had spotted him, he deliberately kept walking without pause.
Shawn couldn't even be bothered to acknowledge Ian.
He was certain that Ian would just bring up the Lennox sisters again.
Shawn thought, 'And it would inevitably be him badmouthing Raelynn again.'
Shawn couldn't care less about listening, let alone doing what Ian wanted.
Fortunately, Ian spotted Shawn from afar. Seeing that Shawn had no intention of talking to him, Ian hesitated for a moment before taking a couple of tentative steps forward, but ultimately couldn't bring himself to call out to Shawn, who would soon become his brother-in-law.
Ian watched as Shawn strode purposefully toward his own quarters, his figure receding into the distance.
In the end, Ian could only heave a sigh and turn away, heading in the opposite direction.
Ian thought, 'Oh well, Uncle Shawn has never listened to me anyway.'
He had to sort things out himself then.
When Shawn returned to his quarters, Max Knowles, his ever-vigilant guard, stepped silently from the shadows where he had been waiting.
"My lord." Max greeted Shawn with a cupped fist salute. It was a gesture executed with the perfect form of a seasoned martial artist.
Logically speaking, in a centuries-old aristocratic family like the Marquis' estate, all the guards and servants should be properly trained and strictly disciplined.
But Max was clearly a man of the world.
