Julia once again interjected with feigned concern, "Verda, you shouldn't say that.
"My dear sister is, after all, part of our family. While her past transgressions cannot be denied, she has paid her dues. Her release brings me nothing but joy.
"Of course, my sister's release owes much to Grandmother's Royal Pardon, but even more to the boundless mercy of His Majesty and the noble consort. The fact that they could forgive her for causing the death of their son shows the depth of their compassion."
Verda sighed, "Julia, you're just too kind. Margot is your grandmother, and given how exceptional you are, she still blatantly favors that country bumpkin over you. Honestly, I think she's just going senile with age!"
Little did Verda realize that the very subjects of their gossip were standing around them.
Under normal circumstances, given her lowly status as an unfavored bastard child of the Carlson family, she would never have dared to utter a single disparaging word about anyone in public, especially since the subject was Margot.
Hearing this, Julia shot a deliberate, triumphant look in Raelynn's direction, her eyes gleaming with smug provocation.
Julia thought viciously, 'Today, I'll make sure to humiliate this bitch in front of all the noble ladies of Hazond City!
'I'll make sure everyone sees just how utterly unpresentable she is.'
Raelynn's chest heaved subtly at these words, her anger barely contained.
She could endure being slandered. She could even accept being sent to the royal court by her parents to take the blame for Julia.
However, she wouldn't stand for anyone badmouthing Margot to her face.
Margot was the only one who had ever truly cared about her in the Lennox family. She was the only one who had ever trusted her completely, no matter what.
She even worried herself sick over Raelynn to the point of nearly running herself into the ground.
She was even willing to use the Royal Pardon, which could save their entire family from a disaster, all for Raelynn's sake.
Even though Raelynn had other plans, she couldn't care less about them now.
Like Verda, the other noble ladies fawning over Julia were completely oblivious to the presence of Raelynn and Margot nearby.
Upon hearing Verda's blatantly disrespectful remarks and noticing Julia's complete composure, the noble ladies instantly understood that Verda was merely echoing Julia's sentiments.
Julia was known for her charity work, yet she could speak so harshly about her own grandmother. This deeply confused those noble ladies. However, they consoled themselves with Julia's recent popularity among the public.
After all, they had grown up alongside Julia. Years of familiarity had made them well aware of her petty schemes and underhanded ways.
That was the reason why they'd all distanced themselves from Julia over the years.
This time, they had come to flatter her against their will, entirely at the insistence of their family.
After all, keeping close ties with someone like Julia, who was so beloved by the public, couldn't hurt.
Thus, they all began showering Julia with hollow praises.
They showered her with effusive praise, including saying that she was a beauty with a heart of gold and the very embodiment of mercy.
Julia lapped up the praise with a smug smile tugging at her lips.
But before they could say much more, a cold, stern voice suddenly cut through the air from behind them.
"How is it that the good deeds of my trueborn granddaughter are being credited to someone else?" Margot demanded in an icy and sharp tone.
The noble ladies turned in unison, only to be met with Margot who was filled with anger.
Caught right in the act of gossiping about the very person right there, several of the noble ladies flushed crimson with mortification.
No one dared to say another word. Instead, they murmured stiffly, "Mrs. Lennox."
Julia's face flushed crimson.
'I never expected that damned old hag would just march right over with no regard for my dignity at all!' Julia fumed inwardly.
One of the more astute noble ladies, Trina Ward, asked with a hint of puzzlement, "Mrs. Lennox, what do you mean by that? Julia has recently been distributing food to the poor and even invited Dr. Edgar Coventry to offer free medical consultations.
"Her good deeds have even impressed His Majesty. Your words seem to suggest that something more lies beneath the surface."
She thought, 'What's all this talk about "trueborn granddaughter" and "taking credit"? I don't get it at all.
'What on earth is she talking about?'
Still, even though Trina couldn't quite make sense of Margot's words, her keen intuition told her there was far more to this story than met the eye.
Julia's face stiffened slightly, a flicker of panic flashing across her features as Trina hit the nail on the head.
Julia thought, 'If that old hag Margot or that bitch Raelynn exposed my lies in public, I'd be the one utterly ruined today.
'I must stop them from exposing the truth!'
