Shawn let out a cold laugh. "Your sister's temperament suits me perfectly."
Hearing this, Gabriel snapped back to reality, his face darkening further.
Gabriel said, "The entire Hazond City is already buzzing about her clash with Julia at the Ice Party today. If she doesn't rein in this temper of hers, she'll only end up bringing disgrace upon Lord Shawn and the Marquis' estate when she marries you."
There was an almost threatening undertone to his words.
Shawn's sharp eyes narrowed dangerously.
He stepped forward before drawing Raelynn close.
With effortless grace, Raelynn slipped free from Gabriel's hold and naturally took her place beside Shawn.
They were standing dangerously close.
Raelynn could even catch the crisp, cool scent on Shawn. It was refreshing and distinctive, just like him.
The next moment, Shawn said coldly, "What I need is a woman who is neither hypocritical nor affected, neither malicious nor easily wronged. As it happens, Raelynn fits the bill perfectly.
"Such rare and precious qualities are required for my partner."
With every word Shawn spoke, Gabriel's expression darkened further.
He never imagined Shawn would go this far for Raelynn.
Gabriel shot Raelynn and Shawn a strange, searching look.
The sight stunned him.
The chemistry between them was strikingly harmonious.
It was as if they were a match made in heaven.
Gabriel's heart gave a subtle lurch.
Raelynn looked at Shawn in surprise, her voice barely above a whisper. "Lord Shawn, what brings you back?"
'I literally just saw his carriage leave,' Raelynn thought.
Shawn lowered his gaze, his eyes falling on Raelynn's radiant, boldly spirited face in the snowy night.
His voice unconsciously softened.
"Here, take this. Don't catch a chill," Shawn said softly.
The next moment, a warm hand warmer was gently placed into Raelynn's arms.
At these words, not only did Raelynn's expression shift, but Gabriel's face visibly darkened as well.
It was obvious that Shawn's words were just an excuse.
Gabriel thought, 'Raelynn has already returned home. Does Shawn really need to make a special trip back just to deliver a hand warmer?
'Could someone as sharp as Shawn really not know how easily his lie would be seen through?
'This can only mean one thing.
'He's doing this on purpose.
'He's deliberately siding with Raelynn just to put me in my place.'
Realizing this, Gabriel was practically seething with humiliated rage.
With a dark look on his face, Gabriel glared at the perfectly matched couple and demanded, "Lord Shawn, aren't you afraid that by indulging your lady to bully my sister like this, word will get out? People will laugh at how you spoil your wife, and you might even invite impeachment!"
Raelynn thought to herself, 'Another threate about Lord Shawn's official standing and reputation.'
Inwardly, Raelynn felt that Gabriel was destined for doom.
The Duke's estate couldn't even hold a candle to the Grand Marshall's estate.
Not only was the Grand Marshall a second-highest rank official, but his family had also produced a noble consort who was favored by the king.
To put it bluntly, they were the king's in-laws.
Even so, when Jaylee dared to threaten Shawn with his official standing and reputation, he mercilessly shut her down without a second thought.
And now, with Gabriel, Raelynn figured he'd be in for an even worse fate.
As expected, Shawn's expression grew even more unsettling.
He was clearly smiling, but there was something so unnerving about that smile. Gabriel felt like being stalked by a tiger.
Shawn said coldly, "Lord Gabriel, instead of lecturing me, perhaps you should go advise the Duke of Seymore. For him to bully his own daughter for the sake of an adopted daughter of questionable lineage, that is the real joke."
The moment the words left Shawn's lips, Gabriel's face visibly contorted with rage.
Gabriel fixed his gaze on Raelynn with such murderous intensity, it was as if he were staring at a sworn enemy.
Gabriel shouted, "Raelynn, I never imagined you could sink to this level of malice just for your own interests.
"I'm utterly disappointed in you, Raelynn. Someone like you doesn't even deserve to be called my sister."
Raelynn was momentarily baffled by his outburst.
Raelynn wondered, 'What did I even do?
'How did I end up getting blamed like this?'
But after a moment's thought, Raelynn just shrugged it off.
Raelynn thought, 'Anyway, Gabriel is nothing but a stubborn mule. There's no reasoning with him.'
So, in the face of Gabriel's furious outburst, Raelynn merely hugged the hand warmer closer to herself.
Basking in the warmth, Raelynn simply shrugged.
She was filled with nothing but indifference.
Gabriel, however, was so utterly provoked by Raelynn's nonchalant demeanor that his composure completely shattered.
