Gabriel flew into a rage before jabbing a finger at Raelynn. "I've always known you resented Julia for taking your standing and stealing the life that should've been yours!
"But it wasn't Julia's fault that you two were switched at birth. How dare you bully her like this?
"My parents and I have been bending over backward to make amends with you, yet you're still so ungrateful. How dare you tell outsiders that she's adopted?
"Don't you realize how heartbroken she'll be? How could she ever hold her head up in Hazond City after this?"
At this moment, it finally dawned on Raelynn.
She thought, 'So that's why Gabriel suddenly accused me of being vicious. He actually thinks I was the one who told Shawn that Julia is adopted. What a ridiculous reason.
She retorted, "A fact is a fact. Why are you afraid that people will find out about it? Or is it that you actually look down on her adopted status yourselves?"
Gabriel once again felt the sting of Raelynn's sharp tongue, his chest heaving violently with fury.
Gabriel roared, "What utter nonsense. We dote on Julia because she's worthy of all our love!"
The unspoken implication was clear. Raelynn wasn't worthy of their affection.
Gabriel's words were deliberately meant to twist the knife in Raelynn's heart.
Had she not already given up on the Lennox family, she would have been utterly devastated at that moment.
Yet now, having fully seen through the Lennox family's true colors, Raelynn felt nothing at all.
Not even a flicker of emotion stirred within her.
Raelynn even curled her lips into a frosty smile.
Her icy smile only provoked Gabriel further.
Gabriel lashed out recklessly, "You're so utterly wicked. We should never have saved you from the palace in the first place. No, we never should have even brought you back from that wretched countryside!"
Just as Gabriel's words grew increasingly outrageous, Shawn interjected. "As a member of the Lindsay family, do you think I wouldn't know your family's affairs?
"When Ian came to annul the engagement, it was Margot who declared that your scheming foster sister was adpted."
Shawn's words struck Gabriel like a bolt from the blue, leaving him rooted to the spot.
It suddenly dawned on Gabriel that Shawn's very first words had indicated that he knew Julia was adopted.
But at the time, he'd been so utterly shocked and furious that he hadn't even registered it.
Raelynn delivered the final blow. "And just so we're clear, Lord Shawn is my fiancé. He is not an outsider. If anyone here truly qualifies as an outsider, it's your precious foster sister."
Gabriel immediately glared at Raelynn, his eyes blazing with fury.
Unfazed, Raelynn held her hand warmer and curtsied to Shawn. "Lord Shawn, thank you for seeing me home. The roads are slippery, please watch your step on your way back."
Shawn knew that she was asking him to leave.
For some reason, he suddenly found himself reluctant to leave.
Shawn chuckled softly. "Let me see you back to your room first."
Raelynn arched her eyebrows in surprise again.
She wondered, 'Is he worried that Gabriel might keep giving me trouble after he leaves?'
For some reason, a wave of warmth flooded through her.
She didn't refuse. A tiny dimple appeared at the corner of her lips as she smiled.
Raelynn nodded gently and said, "In that case, thank you, Lord Shawn."
Honestly, Raelynn couldn't care less about listening to Gabriel bark anymore.
She thought, 'Well, if I get the chance, I'll just return the favor later to Lord Shawn.'
Raelynn left with Shawn.
But just before Shawn turned away, his gaze unexpectedly locked with Gabriel's once more.
Gabriel's eyes burned crimson with rage. When Shawn turned to look at him, Gabriel found himself frozen mid-glare, unable to look away in time.
As Gabriel met Shawn's piercingly cold, all-knowing gaze, he suddenly felt utterly exposed and profoundly inadequate.
Shawn's face remained impassive.
In a voice only the two of them could hear, Shawn said slowly, "If I ever hear again of anyone in the Duke's estate mistreating her or making things difficult for her, don't blame me for interfering with Ian's marriage."
It was clear that Shawn was talking about Julie.
Confronted with Shawn's blatantly unleashed, overwhelming authority that was unique to the Prime Minister, Gabriel felt an instinctive fear.
Gabriel opened his mouth to retort, but Shawn clearly couldn't care less about his response.
With that casual warning, Shawn turned on his heel and escorted Raelynn to Lunebloom Hollow.
Gabriel staggered back, his strength giving out.
The doorman, who had witnessed the whole scene from the sidelines, was trembling with fear.
The doorman moved to steady Gabriel, but stopped when Gabriel suddenly seemed to realize something and abruptly bolted in the opposite direction.
