Go back and knock,” Sofia’s stern voice cut through the air like a whip, her sharp green eyes narrowing as she looked at her son. Alessia had barged into her office without so much as a warning, his face scrunched up in a pout and his arms crossed over his chest. He looked every bit the spoiled prince he was, his black hair messy and his green eyes glistening with unshed tears.
“Momm…” Alessia whined, his voice high-pitched and pleading as he stomped his foot for emphasis.
Sofia raised an eyebrow, her expression unyielding. “And I told you to call me ‘Your Highness’ when we’re in the office,” she said, her tone firm. “Now, out.”
Alessia’s lower lip trembled, and for a moment, it looked like he might burst into tears. He stamped his foot again, his frustration evident, but he knew better than to argue with his mother when she used that tone. Reluctantly, he turned on his heel and marched out of the office, slamming the door behind him.
A few seconds later, there was a soft knock on the door. “Come in,” Sofia called, her voice calm and composed once more.
Alessia entered, his pout still firmly in place. But instead of sitting down in one of the chairs across from her desk, as protocol dictated, he walked straight to his mother and plopped himself down on her lap. Sofia let out an exasperated sigh, her hands instinctively coming up to steady him.
“Oh my God, Alessia,” Sofia said, her voice a mix of amusement and frustration. “You’re already old. Stop acting like a baby.”
“But mom, I’m hurt,” Alessia whined, his voice dripping with melodrama. “Comfort me.”
Sofia rolled her eyes but couldn’t suppress a small smile. Her son was impossible, but he was also impossible to resist. “What’s wrong with my baby?” she asked, her tone softening as she brushed a strand of hair away from his face.
Alessia sniffled, his big green eyes looking up at her with a mix of sadness and confusion. “How come I’m not getting pregnant, mom?” he asked, his voice trembling. “I saw pregnant males when you took me to your pack. Why can’t I be like them?”
Sofia’s expression softened, her heart aching for her son. She wrapped her arms around him, holding him close as she tried to find the right words. “Baby,” she said gently, “those males you saw were Omega wolves. If I had been an Omega wolf too, there might have been a chance for you to be born as an Omega wolf-vampire hybrid. But I’m not, and neither are you.”
Alessia frowned, his brows furrowing as he tried to process her words. “But why is my mate male if I can’t get pregnant?” he asked, his voice filled with frustration. “It doesn’t make sense.”
Sofia sighed, her mind racing as she tried to come up with an explanation that would satisfy her son. After a moment, she said, “How about this? I’ll look into it and give you an answer after dinner. Okay?”
Alessia nodded, his pout softening as he nestled into his mother’s chest. “Okay,” he said, his voice small but content.
Sofia smiled, her hand gently stroking his hair as she held him. Despite his stubbornness and his tantrums, Alessia was still her little boy, and she would do anything to make him happy.
Alessia sat across from his mother in her office, his usual playful demeanor replaced by an uncharacteristic seriousness. His green eyes were steady, his hands clasped tightly in his lap as he listened to Sofia explain what she had discovered. The room was quiet, the only sound the soft ticking of the ornate clock on the wall.
“Alessia,” Sofia began, her voice gentle but firm, “I’ve looked into it. The only way you could potentially get pregnant is if your mate were either a wolf or turned into a vampire. That’s the only way your body would be compatible to carry a child.”
Alessia’s heart sank at her words. He had been hoping for a simpler solution, something that wouldn’t require such a drastic change. The thought of asking Drake to give up his humanity—the very thing that made him who he was—terrified him. Drake had already sacrificed so much for him, leaving his home, his friends, and his old life behind to be with Alessia in the Crimson Kingdom. How could he ask for more?
“No, Mom,” Alessia said, his voice firm and resolute. “I won’t let that happen.”
Sofia blinked, surprised by the determination in her son’s voice. “Alessia,” she said softly, “this could be your only chance to have a child.”
But Alessia shook his head, his expression unwavering. “Please, Mom, don’t tell anyone about this,” he said, his voice pleading. “It won’t bother Drake that we don’t have a child. In his world, men don’t get pregnant. He’s already done so much for me—I can’t take away the only thing he has left: his humanness.”
Sofia’s eyes softened as she listened to her son. She had always known Alessia to be spoiled and stubborn, but this was different. This was selflessness, a side of him she hadn’t seen before. He wasn’t thinking about what he wanted; he was thinking about Drake, about what was best for him.
“I no longer want to get pregnant,” Alessia said, his voice steady but filled with emotion. “Drake has given up so much for me. I can’t ask him to give up any more.”
Sofia’s heart swelled with pride as she looked at her son. For all his flaws, Alessia had a good heart, and in this moment, it shone brighter than ever. She reached out, gently cupping his face in her hands.
“I’m proud of you, baby,” she said, her voice warm and filled with affection. She leaned in, pressing a soft kiss to his forehead. “You’ve grown so much.”
Alessia’s eyes filled with tears, but he blinked them away, a small smile tugging at his lips. “Thank you, Mom,” he said, his voice soft but sincere.
Sofia smiled, her hand brushing through his hair one last time before she pulled away. “You’re going to be just fine,” she said, her tone reassuring. “And so will Drake. You two have something special, and that’s what matters most.”
Alessia nodded, his heart feeling lighter than it had in days. He knew he had made the right choice. Drake was his mate, his love, and he would do anything to protect him—even if it meant letting go of a dream.
