I wasn't about to play into her sick little game.
Slave? Give me a break. I'm a grown-ass man—you think some video's gonna scare me? If you wanna go low, don't cry when I go lower. I know you teach at Brookfield High. Threaten me again, and I'll be at your doorstep before you can blink. Let's see who goes down harder.
Compared to Sophia, I had the upper hand.
First, she was a teacher—a public figure. Second, she had an online following, a rising star in the streaming world. If this got out? Career over. Reputation ashes.
But instead of backing off, she had the nerve to laugh in my face. "Go for it. Better move fast though—school lets out at three. Wouldn't want you to miss me."
Unbelievable.
Did she have a death wish?
No choice. I floored it to Brookfield High.
I played the part of the nostalgic alum, swinging by the security booth with fruit and milk. Old Walter lit up the second he saw me.
"Ethan? Damn, kid—look at you! Here to see me or the teachers?"
"Both." I flashed a grin, sliding him a cigarette and leaving the milk. "Actually, was hoping to catch my old homeroom teacher, Sophia Valentine. She around?"
The second her name left my mouth, Walter froze, lighter halfway to his cigarette. "Who? Sophia?"
"Yeah?" What was the big deal? It wasn't like I'd asked to see a ghost.
Walter's expression darkened. "Ethan… you really don't know what happened your senior year?"
My gut twisted. After finals, I'd nuked the class group chat and blocked everyone. What was there to know?
"Walter, spit it out. What happened?"
He took a slow drag, exhaling smoke like it was the weight of the world. "That year… some students attacked her. She couldn't take it. Jumped from the school roof."
Ice shot through my veins.
Dead?
But I'd just seen her. Talked to her. If she died six years ago—who the hell was in that hotel room with me?
Walter's jaw clenched. "Three of your classmates—Dylan Macmillian, Tyler Evans, Brandon Lopez—stayed late that night. I let 'em in. Never thought those little shits would…"
My hands curled into fists.
Those three had always been walking trash—bullies, future felons. I'd only reconnected with them this year for business.
And now I found out they'd gotten away with murder.
Dylan and Tyler ran a successful contracting company now. Brandon landed some cushy corporate gig.
No justice. No fallout.
Just a life swept under the rug.
Walter's voice cracked. "By the time I got there, she was already on the pavement. So much blood. The boys ran. School covered it up. Families paid to keep it quiet."
A woman—gone.
And the rage inside me? Hollow. Cold.
I'd always known they were scum.
But this?
This was pure evil.
