The once calm voice on the other end suddenly became urgent. "Where are you? What happened?"
I answered weakly, "I'm at the cliff. Can you come save me?"
Fifteen minutes later, the roar of helicopter blades grew from distant to near.
As soon as the aircraft landed, a tall, well-built man jumped out and strode over to me.
He scooped me up in his arms, "Jesus, what did you do to yourself?"
I was about to speak when sharp pain made me gasp. He tightened his hold. "Don't talk."
The next second, everything went black.
When I woke up again, everything was white and the air smelled of disinfectant.
Julian Thorne sat beside the bed, his brow furrowed. "Isabelle, what have you been through all these years?"
He handed me a thick medical file. "You took all these fertility shots and medications—did you want a baby that badly?"
I remained silent, my eyes welling up.
Memories flooded back like a tide. All these years I'd secretly taken medications and injections, naively thinking that if I just tried hard enough, I could get pregnant with Dominic's child.
How ridiculous. He wouldn't even touch me.
Tears fell beyond my control.
"I thought you'd be happy with him. But he hurt you like this..." Julian gently wiped away my tears. "Isabelle, what I promised you will always stand."
Julian and I had known each other since high school. He was the beloved young heir of the Thorne family. I'd saved him once, and he always said he wanted to marry me in return, but I kept refusing because of the Harlow engagement.
The day he transferred schools, he stopped me at the school gate. "Remember, whenever you need help, come find me. Though of course..."
The teenage boy's ears had turned red. "I'd rather you come to marry me and have my children."
I never expected that ten years later, he'd still remember.
Under his careful care, my health gradually improved. One day when I went looking for him, the staff said he was at the pool.
The sight in the sunlight made me freeze in place.
Water droplets slid down his muscled abs, outlining perfect lines. When he raised an eyebrow and looked over, I hurriedly turned away, only to meet his amused gaze. "Like what you see?"
I quickly looked away, my ears burning.
That evening, he brought me warm milk, his voice deep and gentle.
"Remember that prank in high school? Someone posted in the class group chat saying they wanted instant noodles, even leftovers would do."
"Everyone was calling her a pathetic loser, but you were the only one who privately messaged to ask if she was okay."
His gaze softened. "When you found out it was just a dare, your first reaction was relief, saying 'Thank goodness she's not really in trouble.'"
Julian suddenly leaned forward, looking directly into my eyes. "Isabelle, you've always been like this. Worrying about a stranger's meal, feeling sad for people who have nothing to do with you..."
I stared at his handsome face so close to mine, seeing the emotions swirling in his eyes.
His voice trembled slightly. "Ten years ago you saved my life. Now it's my turn to fulfill your wishes."
"Stop... shedding tears for people who don't deserve it."
My fingertips unconsciously touched his abs. He let out a low groan and swept me up in his arms.
That night, the moonlight witnessed our passionate.
