Analise.
I wait anxiously inside my OBGYN’s office. The white walls feel smaller than usual, closing in around me like a trap.
I close my eyes for a moment. “Oh, please, God, let this be it," I whisper, clasping my hands together in a silent prayer.
Today marks my fifth anniversary with my husband, Tyler. And I want to give him the best present—a baby.
He’s wanted to become a father for so long. He has always wanted a big family to make up for his lonely childhood.
“I want a house filled with laughter,” he told me on our honeymoon, eyes shining with dreams.
We’ve been trying to have a baby since then, but five years later, my life is still about negative pregnancy tests and countless disappointing appointments to the OBGYN.
Tyler used to reassure me, “Don’t worry, we’ll try again,” every time we failed. But over time, he stopped saying those words altogether.
I don't just want this baby; I need it. It could be the key to helping Tyler and me reconnect.
"Come on, little one," I murmur, caressing my belly. "Your daddy is waiting for you."
DADDY.
The word makes me remember my own father—stern, strict, and so obsessed with keeping his wealth intact.
It’s been eight years since I last spoke to him. Eight years since he disowned me and forbade me to use my real surname: McGregor.
Back then, when I became Analise Lander Lewis, after I married Tyler, I thought giving up my family name and all the wealth and glory that came with it was all worth it.
Tyler and I built his company together. Today, TL Glam Studio has become one of the fastest-growing jewelry brands in the country. He took my designs and created them into fashion pieces. We discovered the perfect price—neither so high that most people can't afford it, nor so low that it might be perceived as cheap.
No one knew I was behind our iconic bestsellers. At TL Glam Studio, Tyler and I kept our marriage private.
“I don’t think many of my colleagues knew that their Senior Designer is actually the wife of their CEO,” I scoff.
In the beginning, we did everything together. But as TL Glam Studio gathers success, we both became absorbed in our own roles. I did the designing, and he worked hard on the ops. I am not sure when he stopped introducing me as his wife. I didn’t really mind. I was too busy being the wind beneath his wings. I wanted him to soar. I kept the spotlight away from myself.
TL Glam Studio will survive and continue to soar. I think now is the time for Tyler and me to start rebuilding our family. Perhaps go back to how we used to be.
Tyler was the sweetest guy I’ve ever met. He was all about surprise dates and bouquets of flowers. Now, I think it’s been more than a year since I received roses from him.
Tyler is not cheating on me. He’s just too absorbed with his work. He’s tasted success and he doesn’t want to go back to how things were—failed venture after failed venture, countless hours waiting on tables and mixing drinks behind the bar.
When SB Capitals, invested millions to produce my jewelry designs and put them on the market, it made Tyler rich, featured him in a couple of magazines around the country. Nobody else is happier for him than me. And it inspired me to design more iconic pieces for TL Glam Studio.
I sigh. “Maybe it’s also partly my fault we were drifting apart.”
I had been absorbed with my work, too. If I get pregnant, I’ll be more than happy to take a step back and prioritize our family.
The door opens, pulling me out of my reverie. Doctor Reeves enters, carrying a folder with my test results.
“Mrs. Lewis,” she begins. Her expression is serious, almost grave, and it sends a chill down my spine. “I have some news…”
“Is… is it good or bad?” I ask Doctor Reeves as she sits on her chair.
Instead of answering, she turns on her computer and turns the screen towards me. I blink back at the grainy black and white image of my ultrasound.
“I actually have no idea what I’m looking at,” I laugh nervously.
"Well, you finally, you did it! You're pregnant!" she says. She points at a tiny dot on the screen. “And that, right there, is your little angel.”
‘What? Am I really?’
Tears blur my vision, and I blink rapidly, afraid to look away from the tiny blob that represents my greatest dream come true. "If this is a dream, please don’t wake me up.”
Dr. Reeves gives me a warm smile and then she continues speaking, her tone suddenly turning serious. “But I gotta warn you, dear. There might be complications. Your pregnancy is high-risk…”
Her words fade into the background as my mind races. I can only focus on one thing: ‘I’m pregnant! Finally!’
Tyler's going to be over the moon. I can only imagine his face when I finally tell him. Those chocolate brown eyes lighting up for me, the way they did many years ago when we just started dating.
“But you need to be careful. Especially in the first trimester," Dr. Reeves' voice cuts through my thoughts.
"Of course, doctor. I'll be careful." I nod absently, still fixated on the dot on the screen. ‘My baby.’
My hand drifts to my still-flat stomach, a protective gesture I’ve been practicing for years. But this time, it’s real. As I caress my tummy, I know there’s life growing in there.
This is it. The perfect anniversary gift for Tyler. Better than any designer watch or exotic vacation I could have planned.
"Analise, are you listening?" Dr. Reeves asks, raising a brow at me.
I look away from the screen, finally meeting her eyes. "Yes. Yes, I’m sorry. It's just... I can’t believe this!”
She smiles softly. "I know. But you got to pay attention. What I’m telling you is important.”
“Yes, I’m sorry. I will remember what you said,” I assure her. “I will take care of myself and the baby. I will probably make arrangements with my husband to allow me some extra days off, or perhaps a work-from-home setup.”
I sigh happily. I can’t stop caressing my abdomen. This is it. This baby is going to bring Tyler back to me.
Dr. Reeves hesitates. “There’s... something else you should know. But I think it’s best we run more tests first.”
My heart skips a beat. I grip the edge of the chair. “What do you mean?”
“Let’s talk after your next visit.” She gives me a tight smile.
‘Why do I have a feeling that there’s bad news behind that smile?’
