My eyes flew open wide, my voice nearly cracking as I shouted into the phone.
"I said I'm pregnant with Ethan's baby." Victoria Evans' tone was smooth, dripping with smug amusement.
My face cycled through shock, disbelief, and fury before I finally ground out through clenched teeth, "Victoria, what the hell kind of game are you playing? Get rid of it."
"Oh, I will," she purred. "But abortions are so... traumatic. You wouldn't want me coming back to you over this, would you? And I doubt Ethan would appreciate finding out either."
Her sickly sweet tone made my stomach twist.
So this was about money.
"Name your price."
The words tasted bitter, but I'd pay anything to keep her away from my son.
"Straight to the point—I like that. $100,000 should cover it. Pocket change for a family like yours, no?"
My eye twitched. "A hundred grand?! That's extortion!"
Victoria's low, mocking laugh slithered through the receiver. "Such a small price, really. Because if you refuse, Sophia... well, let's just say Ethan's very private photos and my prenatal reports might just end up on the dean's desk at his prestigious Ivy League school."
"You took photos?!" My nails dug into my palm. "This is blackmail!"
"Call it whatever makes you sleep better at night. The real question is—are you paying?"
It hit me like a punch to the gut. This had been her plan all along.
I forced a slow breath, steadying my voice. "You'll get your money. But every single photo gets destroyed, and you disappear—permanently. Cross me, and I swear you'll regret it."
"Relax, darling. Professional integrity matters in my line of work. Just wire the funds."
The call ended, but her words clung to my mind like poison: Professional integrity?
My breath caught.
Was this her scheme? Lurk in support groups, prey on desperate mothers like me, seduce our sons, then extort us with fake pregnancies and incriminating photos?
Sleep with teenage boys and get paid—two birds, one stone.
The pieces fit too perfectly. No wonder she'd been so eager, so practiced.
I wanted to refuse—but those photos of Ethan left me no choice. Not after everything he'd sacrificed to get into that school.
The wire transfer went through—$100,000 straight into Victoria's account.
Her final text blinked on my screen:
Sophia, let's never meet again!
Then she vanished—every trace of her erased.
The knot in my chest loosened slightly. Money well spent for peace.
"Mom? What did Aunt Victoria say? When's she coming back?"
Ethan's hopeful expression cut deeper than any knife.
I studied his face before shaking my head. "Her family matters will take time. She's not sure when—or if—she'll return."
"Oh."
His shoulders slumped as he dragged himself to his room, the weight of disappointment crushing him.
In the weeks that followed, Ethan moved through the house like a ghost.
I recognized the signs—he missed her.
But there was nothing I could do except watch.
