Piper’s POV
I’ve been waiting for what felt like centuries for everything to quiet down around here. I peeked at the clock and saw that it was just after 10 pm. The night shift started three hours ago and that was the last time a nurse has come in to check on me. I know that she should be here any time now so I closed my eyes again to wait. It didn’t take long and soon the nurse was in and out of my room. She won’t be back in again for another few hours. By then I hope to be long gone from this place with my baby Anya in my arms.
I say a silent prayer to the moon goddess to forgive me for what I am about to do. If I had any other choice I would do it, but I haven’t been able to come up with one. With that b***h on his side there is nothing that I can do. I don’t know how she does it, but she erases peoples minds after a certain point past the border. She doesn’t even have to be there for it to happen. It is honestly creepy because she isn’t a witch. Lucky has not been able to get read on her scent to determine what supernatural being she is.
I got out of bed and noticed some basic sweatpants and t-shirt. I put the clothes on and then went to check the window. I am thankful I seem to be on a lower level of the hospital and can easily get out of the window. I open it up and get onto the ledge. I drop down and land in a crouching position. Lucky enhances our senses and allows me to hear if there is anyone about. We don’t hear anyone nearby and we make our way to the packhouse. Baxter had me go over maps and maps and maps of this place. I know exactly where to get in undetected.
As I sneak in the delivery doors by the garage I make my way into the main house through the kitchen. I made my way up the service stairs to the top floor where the Alpha family lives. I am surprised there aren’t any guards up here. I make my way down the hallway and stop at the end. ‘Lucky, can you smell where we need to be? Maybe pick up the scent of baby powder or something?’ I asked my wolf.
I heard Lucky snort and roll her wolfy eyes in my mind before she said, ‘Child I swear you say the funniest things sometimes. What do you think I have been doing? Turn to your left and the door is right there.’ I felt Lucky lay down in my mind and lay her paws over her eyes. ‘I don’t want to watch this part’ Lucky said as explanation. It was my turn to roll my eyes at her.
I followed her instructions and opened the door on my left and I entered into a nice cozy living room area with three cradles in the corner. After I ensured there were no occupants in the living room I walked towards the back where I knew the bedrooms would have to be. I stopped though when I heard a small whimper come from one of the cradles. I turned towards it and noticed there was some movement. I walked quickly over and noticed that it was a beautiful baby girl. She reminded me so much of my little Anya.
“I am so sorry little one for what I am about to do. I promise I will protect you as best as I can.” I whispered to her as I picked her up. I swear she was watching me and trying to decide if I was ok or not. It gave me chills with how serious this baby is looking at me. I guess she approved of me because she gave a small yawn and went to sleep in my arms.
‘Who just leaves their pup unattended like this’ Lucky says in my mind, angry that the little pup was left alone.
‘I don’t know Lucky, but something tells me that..’ I didn’t get to finish speaking to Lucky when I was interrupted by a young boy.
“Who are you and why do you have my sister?” The young boy asked. He looked to be about twelve years old.
‘Careful Piper. This young wolf isn’t anything like we have seen before. He is a guardian. Judging by the vibes I am getting a fully realized guardian and we so happen to be holding his charge in our hands. Lucky said to me.
‘What the hell is a guardian and what am I supposed to do?’ I say back to her annoyed by her lack of explanations.
“I ummm. I ummm. I… I…” I was stumbling over what to say to this boy or guardian or whatever he is.
“Are you a bad guy? Are you working with that bad man that wants to hurt my mommy?” He growled at me. ‘What do I say Lucky?’ I asked in a panic.
‘Just answer him honestly. If you don’t, there is no telling what he will do. He can sense it.’ Lucky said.
“N..No I am not a bad person. It is hard to explain, but I am not working with that man willingly. He has my baby and threatened to hurt her very badly if I don’t do this for him.” I say defeated. I could feel a tear slide down my face. I’m so sorry Anya. I failed you baby girl.
I watched as the boy studied me much the same as the baby had. I watched his eyes glaze over and I knew that I was done for. He was mindlinking someone. Probably guards or something. What he said next shocked me. “Ok. Esmerelda wants to help you. She says that you have a good heart. So I will go with you to protect my sister. Any funny business and I won’t hesitate to hurt you to protect her.” He crossed his arms over his chest as he glared at me. Almost daring me to test him.
I nodded and watched as he walked over to a closet in the living room and pulled out a jacket, wrap around baby carrier, and diaper bag. He proceeded to fill the diaper bag with bottles and diapers. Along with wipes and baby powder and rash cream and a few extra sets of clothes and clean blankets too. I was completely in awe of this young boy who seemed to know everything he would need to go on a trip with a baby.
“Let’s go before Aunt Jessica and Uncle Blaze are done wrestling in my room.” He said and I just looked at him confused until I realized what he meant. I shivered in disgust. What kind of people would do THAT in a child’s room while babysitting. Reminds me of most scary movies where the babysitter is preoccupied having s*x while something happens to the kids. I stopped in my tracks when I realized that is exactly what is happening. Well s**t. I guess I am now part of that stupid cliche bit, but at least I am not on the babysitter’s end of it.
I followed the boy out of the room and down the stairs. Once outside back the way I had come in we headed for the forest. Once in the tree line he stopped and pulled out the baby wrap around carrier and attached it to himself, and motioned for me to place the baby in it. I did as he said after he explained it was so that she was secure while I transformed and I carried them. It was a smart idea and it gets us out of the territory faster. I just assumed we would walk.
Once the baby was secured he placed the diaper bag so that the bag was laying against his back. As soon as he was ready I went behind a tree and took off my clothes and folded them in a neat pile and proceeded to shift into my wolf form. I felt the usual sensation of my bones snapping and my body readjusting to that of my wolf. Once my shift was complete Lucky grabbed our clothes in her mouth and carried them to the boy.
He grabbed my clothes from Lucky and placed them into a secondary bag I hadn’t seen until now. He placed it on his back like he did the diaper bag. Once he had everything situated Lucky laid down on the ground so that he could get on us easier. After I was sure he was ready he pointed me into the direction to the nearest border. Lucky took off as fast and safely as she could. It didn’t take us long, maybe thirty minutes or so to reach the border. Lucky stopped to sniff and could see that the patrol hadn’t been in this area for a time meaning now was the opportunity we needed to make it across. The moment we made it across the border we heard howls sounding out throughout the pack. They must have figured out the kids weren’t there anymore. Lucky turned and headed towards where we were instructed to go if we could accomplish our task. It took us several hours to make it to our destination and once there we laid on the grass and the boy jumped off. I stood back up and looked around. It was a tiny shack out in the middle of the woods. I quickly went behind a tree to get dressed once my clothes were handed back to me. When I was done we walked up to the front door. I said, “I was supposed to make a phone call once I got here.” I am not sure why I am explaining anything to him, but I felt the need to.” They are supposed to bring my baby to make the trade.”
He nods his head and examines the room. He walked over to an old bed and swept the covers back to reveal a slightly cleaner mattress underneath. He placed both bags down and pulled out a blanket and laid it atop the mattress. Then expertly got the baby out of the carrier and placed her on the clean blanket. I was impressed with how attentive he was to her. Almost like a father or a mate.
‘That is the way of a guardian. They have a special connection Piper. It is how the gods wired the guardians. It is how they can protect their charges better.’ Lucky explained to me.
Once he was sure the baby was taken care of he looked at me and studied me again. Then he nodded his head and said, ” If you want to have help to make sure that you get your daughter back let me talk to my grandpa. He can bring a whole army here to help us. He really is good at war.”
“Wh…who is your grandpa?” I ask.
“Me” a deep baritone voice said behind me.
