Piper’s POV
I twirled around so fast to stare into a very solid muscular chest. A very naked chest. I gulped as I started to trail my eyes upwards and upwards. Good gods, how tall was this man? I finally reached his face and I couldn’t help the whimper that escaped my mouth as I stared into the very angry face of this boy’s grandfather.
I tried to take a few steps backwards but the man grabbed me by my upper arm and dragged me to the center of the room to a chair that wasn’t there before. I was forced to sit down and to my utter dismay manacles appeared and clasped around my wrists and feet effectively securing me to the chair.
I stared wide eyed at the man in front of me in fear. I wish I could say I was made of tougher stuff, but being faced with this man’s anger was enough to make me squeal everything I have ever learned to him just to appease his anger, and I did just that when he asked why I had his grandchildren.
“…I had no choice. He threatened to hurt my baby. He took her away from me and the only way I could have her back unharmed was to do a trade. I didn’t know what else to do. It is just me and my baby girl. Please don’t kill me. Please.” I finished telling my story and let out the sobs that I have been trying to hold back.
The man just stared at me until the young boy said, “Grandpa. Esme trusts her. She wants to help her.”
The man turned to him and said, “Are you sure Timberlink? She could be lying.”
“Ares, stop being an intimidating i***t. That poor girl has been through enough.” A soft feminine voice with authority sounded in the room. I looked around and saw a beautiful woman standing behind the man now.
I watched as the man rolled his eyes and turned around to face the woman and said, “Now Selene, what on earth are you doing here now?” The man I know now as Ares said to the newcomer.
“You know as well as I do that I am never far away from my special children. You are always trying my patience. Just go tell Roman he is needed to help find his grandchildren.” Selene said and dismissed Ares with the wave of her hand.
“Woman you are lucky that Beth likes you or I wouldn’t tolerate that disrespect from you.” Ares said before he disappeared before my eyes.
I watched on as the woman shook her head at Ares. She turned around to look at me and said, “We need to talk, Piper, and we don’t have a lot of time to do it. So let’s just get straight to business shall we?” She said, once she was finished speaking the manacles holding me to the chair disappeared much like the man did. “Now that you are no longer chained to that chair. I must apologize for Ares. One of these days Ares will learn that not every situation is a war situation. You would think that after eons he would have figured that out by now, but alas he is a man and unless it slaps him in the face and in his case with a sword he isn’t going to see it.” The woman Selene said.
Who are these people? ‘Really Piper. You haven’t figured it out by now? You should be bowing down or something! This is mother moon!!! She has graced us with her presence.’ Lucky fangirled in my head. Mother moon? Who in the….Oh my goddess. She’s the moon goddess! I quickly stood from the chair and got down on my knees begging for forgiveness.” Please moon goddess. Have mercy on my wolf Lucky. This isn’t her fault. She is just stuck with a terrible human who couldn’t even protect her own pup.” I felt all my insecurities of being a mother flow through me.
If I were a better mother my child wouldn’t have been taken. She wouldn’t be used as a bargaining chip for me to do this evil thing. She would be safe in my arms in a loving home if I were a better mother. Anya and Lucky would both be better off witho…
“Don’t you dare finish that thought Piper. If you were such a terrible person you would not have pleaded on behalf of your wolf. If you were such a terrible person I would not be here and would have let Ares continue with his interrogation. Let me tell you that would have been very painful for you and your wolf. Finally if you were a terrible person Esmerelda would not have felt safe with you. Timberlink would have never allowed you anywhere near his charge. Now please stand up so we can talk.” Selene said.
‘She’s right Piper. We aren’t bad people. We were stuck in a bad situation with only an even worse way out. If our mate would have been faithful and not a complete jerk we would not be in this situation. We have done the best that we could with what we have had thrown at us. I am proud to be your wolf. Now wipe your eyes and listen to our mother moon.’ Lucky said to me.
I decided to listen to my wolf considering at this point I have nothing left to lose. I slowly stood up as I wiped my eyes free from my tears. I wiped the rest of my face as best I could and looked the moon goddess in her eyes and said, “What did you want to talk to me about?”
“That’s a good girl.” She said, smiling at me. “I know you have had a terrible time this past year. I promise you there is a reason for everything. I don’t exactly like putting my children into bad situations, however sometimes it is necessary for the events of the future to come to pass as they should. Your precious baby Anya is meant for great things, and so are you if you allow yourself to be.”
“How?” I asked in confusion. How could I be meant for great things? Anya I can see, but not me.
“You will see soon enough. Now. Listen to what I have to say and listen very carefully. Do not let the past dictate the future. Sometimes bad things happen to good people to help them grow as a person, and to allow them to accept the good things to come only if they let it. You will need to…” Selene said, stopping mid sentence when we heard a twig snap outside. She closed her eyes for a moment and then smiled and said, “That’s my cue to leave. Just remember what I said and you will be fine.” Then she just disappeared.
What in the world? She didn’t even tell me anything. Is the moon goddess always this cryptic? ‘Let’s worry less about that and more about what is outside this shack. We have two pups here to protect!’ Lucky interrupts my thoughts. She’s right. I can’t let anything happen to these pups.
I moved across the room to place myself between the pups and the door. Timberlink had already put himself between the door and his sister like the good protective brother that he should be. I waited with baited breath for something to happen. I didn’t have to wait long before I heard the cries of a baby. MY baby.
“Shut up you brat. I can’t wait to be done with you.” I heard a woman’s harsh voice.
I ran to the door and swung it open. There on the other side was a woman holding my Anya and roughly ten rogues. I recognized one of them as Baxter’s third in command. He pushed me inside the shack and the woman followed. Once inside he slammed the door shut and looked around the room. His eyes landed on Timberlink and Esmerelda and a wicked smile crossed his lips when he said, “A two for one. You did good w***e. It’s a shame that I have to kill you now. Be thankful that brat of yours will soon follow.”
I looked back at Anya with tears in my eyes and fell to my knees begging, “Please! I did what I was asked. I was promised that I could leave with my baby. Please don’t kill us.” I had to think of something. I used the moment of my show to think about how to get out of this situation. I can’t exactly stay here and let this man try to kill me and my pup. Who knows what sick and evil things Baxter has planned for Esmerelda.
Think Piper. Think! As I bent my head down I looked out of the corners of my eyes for any other exit than the front. I was about to give up when I noticed that there was an open window big enough for me and the pups to get through. I looked around the room and saw a broken down wood burning stove in the corner not far from where I am and where the window is. The woman holding Anya was standing right there too.
I send up a prayer to the moon goddess to help me through this. I eye the man as he is laughing at what I said. This was the perfect time to act. He was far enough away from me and the pups.
I took a deep breath and charged the woman grabbing Anya while pushing her away with all the strength Lucky and I could muster. Yes! Take that you b***h!” Timberlink, come here now!” I shouted out to him.
I was thankful that he had already had Esmerelda in the carrier. Such a smart boy. I didn’t even see him do that. “Climb out that window and I will hand you Anya.
Can you carry both pups?” He nodded his head at me and I continued, “Ok. I want you to run as fast as you can that way. I will be right behind you alright? Now go!”
I grabbed hold of the poker for the wood burner and brandished it as a weapon keeping the man at bay. Once I saw Timberlink disappear out of sight I stabbed the man in his shoulder and jumped out of the window shifting midair running after the pups.
I heard howls sounding out behind me and knew that the rogues were giving chase. We came to a skidding halt at the edge of a ravine with a raging river rushing below. We were trapped.
