Roman’s POV
I hate paperwork. I have been sitting at my desk for four hours now trying to catch up on all this paperwork. I am thankful for Martha staying a little longer to help me figure some of this out. My mother was horrible at running this kingdom. No wonder we had so many traitors in the castle. Thankfully the servants are now happy because they are being paid a decent wage and they are being paid on time.
“You don’t look like you are having that much fun today, Roman.” I heard Selene say from in front of me causing me to jump at the unexpected visit.
“Gods, Selene. Could you at least knock next time. I know you are an all powerful goddess and all, but we mortals, whether we are vampires or not, still can have a heart attack. I would prefer not to die before I have a successor old enough.” I grit out.
“You know what you need, Roman? You need to go on dates. Maybe get a girlfriend or something. Maybe then you might smile a little more often.” Selene says with a knowing smirk on her face.
“Selene!” I sigh out. I didn’t want to have this conversation with her. Even though Esemerelda told me she wanted me to move on and be happy I still can’t imagine myself with anyone else but her. “I will not disrespect my late beloved’s memory with a strand of one night stands.” I grit out.
“That is not what I meant and you know it Roman Petrova! It’s been over 150 years Roman, and you know that Esmerelda would want you to move on with your life and be happy.” Selene says.
“Look I know Esmerelda would want me to be happy, but I am not going to actively go out and seek someone else. If I were to be granted another beloved I would accept her with open arms, but unless fate decides I will remain as I am.” I said.
Selene’s returning smug smirk gave me an uneasy feeling. I have this sick feeling that I just walked into the trap she had laid out for me. “That is all I wanted to know Roman. Well, look at the time. I have to go. See you soon Roman.” Selene said right before she disappeared from sight.
I just sat there for a while just trying to grasp what actually happened right there. After a time I get back to this dreadful paperwork. I just finished the last of the paperwork when Ares comes popping into my office saying urgently, “Roman, Timberlink and Esmerelda have been kidnapped. Your help is being requested. Gather up your men and gather here. You should be able to find them from there.” Ares pointed to an area on the map a few miles outside of the pack’s borders.
I got a hold of my head general and told him to gather up a squad of troops ensuring that we had a couple of our best trackers and a strong witch who can open up portals to get us there faster. I informed him I wanted to leave in the next ten minutes.
Everyone was in formation in front of the castle within five minutes. I was pleased to see this. I showed the map to the witch and she nodded to me and said, “I will have to make several portals to get everyone to the destination, but I can do it.”
I nodded to her and she proceeded to open up the portals. We were soon at our destination within half an hour. I gave my trackers a blanket of Esmereldas that Beth had left at the castle. They each had the scent and took off into the woods. We followed closely behind, but far enough away that our scent would not interfere in their search.
My trackers came to a halt and held up a hand for us to be silent. I move forward to examine what had them stopping so suddenly. I peered through the foliage and noticed a group of rogue wolves standing around outside a small shack. We heard a howl of pain coming from inside the shack and my senses came alive. The most alluring scent of cream and honey hit my nose. My inner beast wanted to rip through and take control. He wanted to taste the blood of whoever owned that scent and make it his forever. We watched as a wolf took off out of a window in the shack and soon another took off straight after. Followed by the rogues.
“Take care of these mongrels I am going to follow that wolf.” I tell my men who all nodded and took off to combat the rogues.
It didn’t take me long to find them and the scene that I approached had my heart stopping until I heard the man threaten a pup. Not just any pup. My beloved’s pup. My pup! My beloved. She was beautiful. I couldn’t wait to hold her in my arms, but first I need to dispatch this pathetic waste of life.
Leave it to Beth and her mates to show up late at a time like this. Ethan was lucky I didn’t take his head off just for threatening my beloved let alone calling her vile names. Beth is definitely meant to be a leader. She is fair and just and willing to listen to all sides of a story before making judgment.
As we are sitting in this office listening to Piper’s life story I can feel my blood boiling at what her pathetic first mate had done to her. How despicable can a man be to do that to his mate. If he didn’t want to have her as a mate he should have done the right thing in that situation and rejected her instead of subjecting her to so much physical and emotional pain. I think I may make a special visit to handle this Beta Axel. Once I am done with him he won’t even be capable of cheating on a mate let alone procreate anymore.
We were all surprised that she retained so much information from the rogue compound. Unfortunately she doesn’t know where it is, but she can remember details that others weren’t able to. I am so proud that she was able to come out on top of all that she has been thrown into.
“Well, I think we can work with this. Though we would need your help Piper if you are willing. We could potentially put a stop to this whole thing.” Beth said.
I had a bad feeling about this. I just know that what she is going to say next is going to piss me off.
“I will do anything to make up for taking your pups from you. I never would have done that if I felt I didn’t have a choice. Anya is everything to me and I would do anything for her as I am sure you would do for your pups as well.” Piper said. “What exactly is your plan Beth?” I said and couldn’t help the slight snarl that came through.
“It is simple. We give Baxter exactly what he wants.” Beth said.
“No!” Ethan roared.
“Are you out of your mind!” Alexi shouted.
“Over my dead cold body will I let you put my beloved or grandchild in the hands of that man.” I snarled out.
“What do I have to do?” Piper said confidently.
“Sweetheart no. Please there is another way than putting yourself in the line of fire. It would be a suicide mission and I just found you and I can’t lose you. I can’t go through that again. I refuse to!” I snarled out and stormed out of the room.
