Roman’s POV
I didn’t want to leave my granddaughter in that kitchen with all those rogues coming at us, but I did as she requested. I understood her compassion in wanting to protect that little girl. If it was a choice between my safety and that of an innocent child I would make the same decision as Beth made. As I am standing here listening into the room that has Beth I hear the heart monitor start going crazy and I stand up straight. As soon as I hear a flatline I rush into the room. I know Alexi doesn’t want me anywhere near his beloved right now, and I can’t blame him because she is hurt more because I left her.
I rush straight to Beth’s side and before anyone can make me move I bite into my wrist and shove it into her mouth so that I can force my blood into her system. I know that she had some of Alexi’s blood in her system due to the marking, but in order to awaken her vampire side it has to be a family member’s blood. More specifically the head of their families blood and that would be me. I don’t know what effect this will have on her unborn children, but I will take the chance at saving all of them no matter the consequences. I didn’t save my Esmerelda. I’ll be damned if I don’t save Beth.
It didn’t take long after my blood entered her system and color started to return to her face and the heart monitor started to initiate a normal rhythm. I heaved a big sigh thanking the gods that I was able to help her like I should have in that kitchen. I am the f*****g vampire king I could have carried her while she held the child to get them both out at the same time. I would have been slowed a little but not enough to cause us to get caught. They say hindsight is 20/20 and I have to agree with that saying. In the heat of the moment I didn’t even register that scenario. I should have taken a few extra seconds to think of it, but that is in the past and I can’t change it. I will change in the future though. How many times have I told Alexi to stop and think through all possible scenarios before making a final decision? That same advice I have given him countless times over the decades and I failed to follow my own advice.
After a few more minutes her wounds were healing at a rapid pace. The deep puncture wounds from the bite on her leg were now raised pink scars. I couldn’t see her back because they had already gotten that attended to and bandaged before she flatlined. After a few more minutes I noticed her eyes start to flutter. She never opened her eyes though and I sighed. I knew it would be too soon for her to awaken right now. The change can take up to a week. The stronger the vampire side however can make it go longer. Unlike with Lycans where the faster the shift means the stronger the wolf counterpart in vampires it is the opposite. The stronger your inner beast is the longer the change. With Beth being a hybrid now I have no idea what will happen. Normal wolves who go through the change lose their inner wolf to make room for the beast. Seeing as how Beth has Lycan, witch, and vampire blood running through her veins I don’t know what will happen.
“Check to make sure her babies are still alive,” I said and sighed again as I watched the nurses run around to find the right machine, “I don’t know how awakening her vampire side will affect the babies.” I finished with a hitch to my voice.
I watched intently as Ethan and Alexi walked into the room and stood beside her bedside. I perched myself in the corner to stay out of the way and to make sure that there are no residual problems from what I have done. As the doctor ran the transducer over Beth’s stomach to check on the babies I watched as both Ethan and Alexi took turns to shoot daggers at me. I shook my head a bit because I knew it would take a while for either of them to forgive what happened in that kitchen. I just hope that Beth doesn’t feel the same way and can help me mend those bridges. They are important to her and so they are important to me even if I haven’t spent much time with her yet I know that I would do anything for her. Same as I would for Erica.
The steady thrumming of irregular beats came from the machine and everyone in the room all sighed in relief at the noise. I watched as the doctor took measurements and retook them again on one of the babies. I noticed a small frown on the doctor’s face.
“What is it? What do you see?” I said demandingly to her.
She looked up quickly at me then to Ethan and Alexi. She gulped and said, “I honestly am not sure what I am seeing. Two of the pups seem to be bigger than the other. It is odd because just yesterday when I checked them out they were all the same size. They have been the same size this whole time. They are all healthy though. Their heart rates and everything else is in the normal limits for a single fetus pregnancy so they are all doing remarkably well considering they are multiples.” The doctor, who I now see is named Marcy, said.
“So the pups are fine. There are no noticeable side effects from the vampire blood,” Ethan had asked again, sending a daggered glare my way.
“Alpha Ethan, If I may be honest and frank with you,” Marcy said as she waited to see him nod his head before she continued, “If it wasn’t for King Roman and his quick thinking we would have lost the future Luna and the heir/s to the pack. She was dead when he came rushing in here to save her. So I would thank him instead of trying to kill him with your stare. Without him your mate would have surely stayed dead. For some reason her Lycan wasn’t healing her which I assume is because she was using her energy to make sure the pups stayed safe.”
Ethan’s face was a mask of either anger or embarrassment. I’m not sure which so I decided to make it easier on all of them and walked out of the room. I didn’t make it very far outside the room when I felt someone tug on my arm. I turned to see Ethan and Alexi both with a variety of emotions on their faces, but the most noticeable was relief, remorse, and thankfulness. I nodded to them and they nodded back to me and said thank you then turned and went back to be by Beth’s side.
“Alexi, before you go. Please tell Ethan that it may be a while before Beth wakes up. She is in transition right now. She is a royal vampire so it could take up to seven days. Mine was six days and you remember how long yours was. She is a strong Lycan and I don’t know how that will affect her transition.” I said and he nodded his head and went back into the room.
I walked out of the hospital and started to walk down to the lake that I saw close by. I raised my head to the midnight blue sky and stared up at the moon. I prayed then and there that I didn’t hurt those babies and they are all alright when they are born. I’d never forgive myself if they weren’t. I closed my eyes for a moment and when I opened them again I was not where I was when I had closed them.
Dream
As I opened my eyes I noticed I was in the middle of a forest in the middle of the day. Just as I was getting my bearings I felt the air from an arrow gliding past my face. I jumped back quickly and took up a defensive stance watching from where the arrow had come from.
“Relax King Roman. I am not hunting you today. I am after a buck. That buck right behind you to be precise.” An Ethereal voice said from the direction I was looking. I watched as she marched up to me and then walked passed me straight to the deer I didn’t even realize was behind me. She bent over and removed the arrow and after saying a few words to the animal she snapped its neck.
