“Don’t worry too much about those babies. Beth will be fine as well. It was meant to be this way. Everything is going how it is supposed to go. However, I come with a warning for you Roman. Your enemies have always been closer than you think. When you take Beth and Erica to the vampire kingdom, which I would do before Beth wakes up, don’t mention that Beth is any relation to you. Monitor Erica and the way the people interact with her when they think you aren’t looking. Though that is my advice. I wouldn’t expect you to take it though being the big bad vampire king and all. How well did that work out for you last time you were trying to find the traitor? That’s right it didn’t work because the traitor is still there eating high on the hog.” She said to me.
“Hold on. Who the hell are you anyway? How dare you bring up what happened to my beloved. I should rip your head from your shoulders this instant for even daring to mention her.” I said in a threatening manner to this infuriating woman! I was enraged by how she was talking to me.
“Ha. I guess I did forget to introduce myself. I apologize for the lack of my manners. Being alive for eternity you tend to forget the social niceties. I am Athena. Also a great, too many to count, grandmother to Beth on her mother’s side of course.” Athena said and took a small bow.
I was completely speechless. I did not know that Esmerelda was related to a goddess. It shouldn’t surprise me though because just how she was. She always had an otherworldly air about her.
“Close your mouth hun. You’ll be catching yourself a bunch of flies soon if you don’t.” Athena laughed at her own dumb joke.
My mouth closed quickly and I said, “So the traitor is in my own kingdom then. No wonder I couldn’t find anything. I was looking at the wolves only. Goddess Athena, do you think that by only naming Erica as my descendent we would be able to catch the traitor without her or Beth getting hurt?”
“Well Beth would be safest if she is just Alexi’s mate for now. You need to figure out the how. I told you what I could. I figured you have been wondering for long enough why your beloved disappeared. I hope you can see the truth and get past it. I will warn you it will blindside you. I can’t say anymore and you have a trip to plan in the next few days. I wish you well on your journey.” Athena said to me before she disappeared and my world went black.
I opened my eyes and I was back at the lake and it was still dark out. I checked my watch and noticed it was only fifteen minutes past the time I walked out of the hospital. Well I guess I better get a plan in place before I say anything to anyone. Thinking over what Athena had said I was trying to think of who it could be that betrayed me. I didn’t have enough information to try and guess who it was. If I hadn’t figured it out before now they were covering their tracks pretty well. I shook that thought out of my head. I will have to come up with a way to set a trap for them.
As I sit and think about my options the world around me keeps on moving and progressing. Before long I start to see the beginning rays of the sun rising. I am onto an idea that I think the others would be able to help me firm up the details, but I need to see if they are even willing to put themselves at a little risk. I make my way back to the hospital and notice everyone is in the waiting room.
I don’t see Alexi so I assume he was with Beth or taking care of other needs. Ethan was sitting with his mother and his sister again. I noticed that their faces looked relieved now though instead of in turmoil. I hope that means Alpha Arthur is going to make a full recovery.
“How are Beth and Arthur doing now?” I asked no one in particular.
“Beth is still asleep, but you know that was going to be a possibility. My father woke up shortly after you left last night. He should be out of the hospital by tomorrow afternoon. His wounds are practically all healed after Alexi gave him some of his blood to help speed up the healing process.” Ethan informed me.
“I am glad to hear that your father is doing better. I know this is short notice but I just had an interesting encounter with the Goddess Athena, who by the way is an ancestor of Beth and Erica. I was told we needed to take Beth and Erica to the vampire kingdom before Beth awakens. There is a problem however if we do this. I was informed that my enemies are actually very close to me. If we say Beth and Erica are my grandchildren it will put a huge target on them. However Athena seems to think we hide Beth’s identity and expose Erica. I am not sure if I like doing that, but it is our best bet to weed out the traitors before we expose Beth and the babies.” I said.
“Wait just a damn minute here! Who the hell decided we were going to use my beloved as bait?! I will not…” Dimitri started to say but was interrupted by Erica.
“Excuse you? Dimitri you may be my other half but you DO NOT get to decide what I will or will not do to protect my daughter. If Roman believes this is the best way to catch who ruined my great grandmother’s life and save my daughter then I will do whatever is necessary with or without your approval. So I suggest if you don’t want to end up on the wrong side of me you stand by my side and help and encourage me instead of telling me what I can or cannot do.” Erica was very adamant about it. She was right up in his face and poking his chest after every word.
“Roman. What do you have in mind? I will do anything to protect Beth and seek justice for those who wronged Esmerelda.” Erica asked me.
“Well my thought was to introduce Beth as just Alexi’s beloved as Athena suggested, and introduce you as Dimitri’s beloved and also my granddaughter. This will take the attention off of Beth temporarily. You will be the center of attention and hopefully help bring out the traitors. Now this next part is the part I am unsure of. From what I understood from the cryptic message from Athena, the traitors will show their true colors when I am not around. So I thought we could get some type of listening device or maybe a spell that allows us to hear and monitor anything that happens to Erica when Dimitri and I are not around and have someone stationed nearby to intercede if needed.” I said ending my half baked idea to see if they agree or want to add to it.
“I think that is actually a good idea. I don’t like putting anyone else in danger to fix a problem, but seeing as how you have been trying to figure this out for over a century we are at a loss if we don’t do this.” A voice said behind me. I turned around to see Alpha Arthur walking out of his hospital room fully dressed. “I convinced Marcy to let me get out of Dodge.” He said with a megawatt smile at his wife and children. “If we do this right then Erica won’t be in any danger. I will talk to Duncan and his wife to see if they have or can come up with something to help with this. That way we don’t involve anyone in the kingdom and possibly tip off the traitors,” He finished.
“I agree. Not to mention it is my own life that I am putting on the line so I think my opinion is the most important in this,” Erica said while looking pointedly at Dimitri who had the good grace to look down in shame for upsetting his beloved.
“Ok. I will go and talk to Duncan now then. I am going to assume you are going to be heading to your territory in the next day or so?” Arthur asked.
“Honestly, the sooner we leave the better. I don’t know how long Beth’s transition is going to take and if Athena said that we should be there before Beth awakens then we need to heed that warning.” I expressed my thoughts on it.
Everyone around me nodded their agreement and we finished up the finer details like who all was coming with us and who was going to stay here. We decided it will be Ethan, Alexi, Beth, Dimitri and Erica, myself, and Jessica Ethan’s sister. Apparently she needs to be there for Beth, but I think she was just trying to figure out a way to get out of school. With the plans all made we went our separate ways to all get done what needed to be done before we left for my kingdom in the morning.
