Beth’s POV
I can’t believe that my mother is gone. She was finally starting to be happy again. Her time with Dimitri was so short. How could someone think that killing another was ok? I just can’t seem to wrap my mind around it. How am I going to raise my babies without her by my side to help me with all the questions that are going to come up. I don’t even know how to change a diaper let alone three at once.
‘Beth, sweety we will get through this with our mates by our side. I am sad too that our mother is no longer with us, but at least we know that she is going to spend her eternity with her mate. She will not have to wait for him to join her or him her. They will be there together watching over us. We have to remember the good times and not the sad. Mother wouldn’t want us to be like that and you know it. She would tell you to buck up and carry on with the grace that she knew you possessed. You can do it. I will be right here with you and so will Alexi, Ethan, and Dex. We are not alone anymore. We also have Arthur and Martha to help guide us and Sandra too. We have a bigger family now, little one,’ Harmony said to me.
‘I know Harmony, It’s just that mother was all I had for a while now. You know from my memories that my father never really loved me. I was a burden to him and his new family. You saw how he treated me after the rape. I just can’t get over how the one person who has always been there for me is no longer with me in the flesh. I don’t think I will ever fully be over her death. It happened so suddenly I didn’t even get to say goodbye or that I loved her. I haven’t told her that in I don’t know how long. It’s going to take time for me, I replied to Harmony.
‘I know it will, but we still have things we still need to do. The world does not stop turning in our grief. It still moves on and we must do the same. We can’t wallow in our grief. Alexi needs us to be strong for him as well. Poor Ethan doesn’t know what to do for us. He is at a loss too from what Dex tells me, Harmony replied to me.
‘Oh gods. We forgot about Ethan and Alexi! I am so ashamed of myself by only thinking about myself. I am a horrible mate to them, I berated myself. I need to stop this now. I know it hasn’t even been more than a few hours, but Harmony is right. The world is still going on around me and I need to keep that in mind. I still have things that I still need to do. I have a whole species of people waiting for me to free them. I need to stop feeling sorry for myself. I will always miss my mother and that will never change. I will keep her close to my heart and remember her there and I will grieve in my private time at night. ‘At a girl. You show them that you are stronger than what they think you are. We can cry to ourselves at night and still do what we need during the day. I know it won’t be easy, but we can do it. I know we can,’
me.

I sat up in bed and noticed that neither Alexi or Ethan were here. I got up and went to the bathroom to do my business and to wash my face of all the salt from my tears. Thankfully my fast healing took care of the puffy eyes from all the crying I have done. After I deemed myself presentable I walked out of the bathroom and bedroom into the living area. I was surprised to see Alexi there speaking with Ares as he ate. They both turned to her when they heard her enter the room. Alexi gave her a sad smile while Ares just stared at her blankly for a moment. After a few intense uncomfortable minutes of her and Ares staring at each other Alexi cleared his throat gaining both of their attention. Beth released a breath she didn’t even realize she was holding while she was being scrutinized by the god.
“Beth, Ares came to speak with us about something and we have been waiting for you to wake up. Come here and eat something before we get into it,” Alexi said to me as I just stood there. I shook my head after trying to figure out what it was that Ares wanted now and she sighed as she made her way to where Alexi was with the food.
“Ethan made us some food before he left. He also left a note that just said about the food and that he went out for a bit,” Alexi told her, showing her the note before handing her her plate of food. Beth nodded after she glanced at the note and then pulled the plate of food to her lap and began to scarf it down. She didn’t realize how hungry she actually was until she started to eat. Once she was done she sat the plate back down on the table feeling a little disgruntled that she was still hungry but she didn’t want actual food. She knew she was going to need to feed on blood soon. Before she could even finish her thoughts on wanting and needing some blood she was handed a glass from Ares and to her surprise it had blood in it. She looked up at him in shock and he just smiled at her as he discreetly put the knife in his hand away.
Beth didn’t think twice about it and started to gulp down the delicious smelling blood. It didn’t taste like the blood she has had previously it had a spice to it if you could even call it that. It was sweet yet spicy and she decided that she rather liked it so she gulped it all down quickly. She was surprised that her hunger was completely gone now and she felt a little stronger too. She shook her head and didn’t think anymore about it and turned her attention to Ares and said, “So what is it that you are here to tell us now. Another task perhaps even though I haven’t even completed the first one or the second one yet?”
Ares chuckled at her and shook his head then said, “No young one. I am merely here to give you a little insight into how your other mate is feeling.” Beth again felt horrible for forgetting about Ethan in her grief, but before she could get too far into her feelings and thoughts Ares continued, “He was feeling rather shameful because he felt sad for your losses but relieved that it wasn’t anyone in his immediate family. I gave him a good pep talk and he left to help sort out Roman’s mess so that you could get ready to start on your second task. So since you two are done eating and crying you should find him now. I hope you like the surprise.” Ares had a cryptic smile on his face as he said that and disappeared before either of them could say anything to him.
“What do you suppose he meant by that at the end, do you think?” Alexi pondered.
“I don’t know but I will find out. That god doesn’t just say things without there being any reason behind it I have noticed.” Beth said with curiosity in her voice.
She quickly linked Ethan and found out that he was in the hospital. Beth was so worried that she cut her link off with him before he could even answer any of her questions and rushed to say, “Alexi we have to go now. Ethan is in the hospital! I don’t know what is wrong but we need to get to him.” She got up frantically and ran to the door of their room. She was so worried that something had happened to Ethan. He didn’t sound hurt in the mindlink, but after what had happened to her mother and Dimitri she just couldn’t stop thinking the worst.
Alexi was right there beside her and he ended up scooping her up into his arms and ran with inhuman speed into the hospital and stopped as soon as he saw Roman, Alexander, Sandra, and Ethan standing in the hallway. He placed Beth down on her feet and she ran straight to Ethan and hugged him tight. “I was so worried when you said you were in the hospital. What’s wrong? Are you hurt?” She asked with worry in her voice.
Ethan chuckled and said, “Well if you would have not cut off the mindlink so fast I would have been able to tell you that I am fine. I am not here because I am hurt. When I went to help with the arrests of the people from the list I found more than I bargained for.” He paused for a minute and then took a deep breath and let it out before he continued what he wanted to say, “The home I went to had servants that were underfed and tortured. I found a basement that had a cage with more than thirty people shoved inside. It was an awful sight to see those poor people being treated that way.” He shook his head like he was trying to get that image out of his head.
Beth gasped at what he had said and she couldn’t help the tears that welled in her eyes from hearing about the condition Ethan had found those poor people in. She felt fingertips softly brush the tears off her cheeks that had escaped her unnoticed by her. She looked up to see Ethan smiling sadly at her. “Shh it’s ok baby. They are all here now getting seen by the doctors. Though there was one person there that I needed to talk to you and Alexi about.” He said nervously.
“What is it Ethan?” Alexi said now intrigued with the conversation even more.
“Well when the guards and I started to get the people out of the cage there was a little boy no older than four years old.” Beth gasped at that.
The poor baby wasn’t very old and was living in a cage. That was awful. She placed her hands on her swollen stomach in a protective gesture not wanting her babies to ever have to experience something like that. “He was sitting in a corner with a woman lying on the floor by his feet.
He wouldn’t leave her. It was his mother. She had been long gone though sadly. The poor lad thought she was sleeping and he was worried that she hadn’t woken up in a few days. After doing some inspection of the woman I noticed that she was a wolf.
I brought the boy here immediately to be checked by the doctors. Dex is pretty protective of him. His name is Link. He is a hybrid half vampire half werewolf. The doctor wanted to find his father so he could ‘neutralize’ him because in his words he was a halfbreed abomination.’ Ethan ended on a growl.
