Jessica’s POV
I’m talking with Alexander and Sandra just passing the time while Beth, Alexi, and Ethan say goodbye to their new son Link. He is such a cute little boy and I am glad that my brother saved him from the life he had been living. It makes me sick to think that there are people who could do that with anyone let alone children. I hope this lights a fire under Roman’s ass to be more vigilant on the inhabitants of his kingdom. I understand he has been grieving for his lost mate, but that is no excuse to let the quality of life for his kingdom go downhill.
I’m pulled out of my thoughts as I see Beth with tears in her eyes rushing my way while Roman has little Link in his arms while he is also crying. “Let’s go before I change my mind and stay here with my pup.” Beth says as she quickly passes me and out the front doors of the castle.
Those of us going on this adventure are gathered in the entrance to the castle gates out of sight of the front door. I walk over to Beth and wrap my arms around her to comfort her and I whisper to her, “Sweety, we will make this quick. Go there grab this flower or plant or whatever the hell the gods want you to get and then we will come back here. Roman will take care of him and Link will be ok.” Beth nods to me and takes a deep breath and wipes her face and eyes free of her tears. I step back as both Alexi and Ethan wrap her up between them to give and receive comfort.
Sandra clears her throat and says, “So I think it will be faster if we teleport to the borders of the abandoned lands. That should take a lot of the time off of our trip. Luckily for us I have been to the borders and with Beth’s help I can get us all there without having to make several different trips.”
“Actually Sandra, I can just open a portal and we can all walk through. Since I got the location from your mind.” Beth says sheepishly as she admits to reading Sandra’s mind once again.
Sandra sends a glare her way and says, “Young lady you are not too old to bend over my knee. You need to get control of that power of yours before you see or hear things you don’t need to. What if I was thinking about my private time with your grandfather?”
“Ewww point taken.” Beth says as she shudders at just the thought of it. While the rest of us just laugh at her reaction.
“Good. Now let’s get going. My grandson wants his mommy and daddies back soon.” Sandra says as she motions with her hand for us to get going.
We all stand back while Beth steps forward and starts to wave her arms around and mumbling something under her breath. Soon a swirling pool appears in the air in front of us. Beth starts to walk forward before Alexi pulls her back and motions with his head for Ethan to go forward first. “Just in case there is danger on the other side of the portal, love. This way you and the pups are safe.” He explains to her and she just nods her head. I walk up to Ethan and grab his hand and say, “Together brother.” He looks at me and smiles and nods. Then a look of determination crosses his face and we walk forward through the portal.
It is weird at first I feel like I am falling and all the air has been sucked from my lungs and then by the next step I feel the earth back under my feet and can breathe again. I bend over and place my hands on my knees as I try to get my bearings back. When I straighten up I notice that we are at the edge of a forest and then ahead of us is a desert-like terrain. Sand and dead trees as far as the eye can see. No wonder these lands are called the abandoned lands. Who would want to live here?
Ethan and I scope out the area to assess that there are no threats nearby and as soon as we are sure it is safe Ethan sticks his hand back through the portal and soon he brings his arm back out and he has Beth’s hand in his. Alexi then Sandra and Alexander follow through and the portal closes behind them. I am glad to see that I am not the only one who was a little disoriented with going through the portal. Alexander is actually bending over a bush and retching.
Once he is done Sandra is handing him a bottle of water that I have no idea where it came from. I am still not used to the whole magic thing. I know it’s weird since I am a werewolf and all but I have not been around that many witches. Even though Patricia, Duncan’s mate, is a witch she usually doesn’t perform magic around us and according to her her magic is basic at best. ‘It is cool though. Can you imagine how easy it would be to travel the world without having to pay for transportation and you can visit several different places before lunch’ Star my wolf said to me.
‘It would be amazing. Maybe we can talk Beth into some exotic shopping trips later when all of this crazy stuff dies down. I can’t believe I am going to say this, but I actually miss going to school. I can’t believe all the things that have happened in a short period of time. I can’t believe my birthday has come and gone and no one else even remembered it. It’s ok though because everyone has been so busy trying to figure all of this out.’ I said back to her. I’m not lying either. I could care less if I had this big party or celebration considering everything else that has been happening, but it would have been nice if someone would have said happy birthday or something. Oh well. No use crying over things I can’t change.
Star whimpers and retreats to the back of our mind. She was hurt that no one remembered us and that we haven’t found our mate yet, but since we are in the vampire kingdom it is not that likely that my mate will be here. I come out of my thoughts when Ethan yells back at me from quite a bit ahead and I realize that I was just spaced out while everyone was walking away.
I blush and then jog to catch up with everyone else. I say I am sorry and they all just laugh at me. I roll my eyes and we start to walk forward into the abandoned lands. Oddly enough even though it looks like it is a desert it is actually not all that hot. More comfortable really temperature wise.
We keep walking for a while and then Alexi and Ethan decide we need to take a break so that Beth can rest. She doesn’t look like she is all that happy with being told she needed to take a break.
“So do we even know what this plant looks like or where to find it here?” I ask out of curiosity. How are we supposed to find something that we don’t know what it looks like?
“So I printed out a picture of what it is supposed to look like. Honestly Ares description is kind of spot on. It almost looks like a dragon head.” Beth said as she handed me a picture and I had to laugh. It really does look like a dragon head. Well at least a baby dragon. I pass the picture off so everyone else can get a look at it.
After about ten minutes of sitting Beth stands up and I can see that Alexi and Ethan are going to start in on her telling that she needs to rest more and then Alexi and Ethan start to argue about her even being in this place. Then we hear a snap of a twig and all of our heads jerk in that direction. Before any of us could register Beth was standing in front of a man. Oh. My. Goddess. He is the hottest mad that I have ever laid my eyes on. His hair was a reddish brown with copper highlights. It almost looked like it was on fire the way the colors blended together. His eyes were an emerald green. His facial structure was strong and defined with a slightly crooked nose that just added to his looks instead of taking them away.
It took me a moment to realize that I was eye raping this man when I heard Star in my head screaming mate over and over again. I couldn’t believe that I have found my mate and he is in this place. What are the odds that this would happen? Then I shake my head as I realize that the gods are probably having fun watching us all.
I start to walk forward and stop as shock is still coursing through me as I catch his scent and say “Mate”. Then I notice the other scent coming off of him and I have to fight with Star not to come out. He is covered in another’s lust. I am pissed and hurt that my mate didn’t wait for me like I did for him.
Before I even realize what I am doing I march up to him and bring my hand back and slap him as hard as I could and say, “Who the hell were you with? I can smell a whores lust all over you.” I have tears in my eyes by the time I finish saying it. I am so hurt I don’t even know if he wants me and now I am acting like a jealous b***h and I don’t even know his name.
This is not how I expected meeting my mate was going to go. I mean I can’t blame him for having a life before me. I know most men are not like my brother and they don’t save themselves for their mates using the lame excuse of blowing off steam or being an alpha male blah blah blah.
But knowing he didn’t save himself is different from smelling that he was just with someone else before he met me and didn’t even bother to shower. He must be in a relationship with this woman. Is he going to reject me because of her? Does he love her? Does he even want me?
