                    Cassie’s Pov
Holding onto my cutlery, I took a glance at Shawn who was seated opposite me. He looked very normal, sipping down his wine.
Donald stared at me, then at his son, then at me again.
I put my fork by my plate, then folded my arms. “I am not going to carry your son’s child.”
“I thought we'd discussed this?” Shawn said, placing his almost empty glass of wine on the table.
“We did and my decision stands.”
“What’s going on here?” Donald said, then turned to me. “Your family and ours had an agreement.”
“I didn’t sign the contract. If you all want an heir so bad, then you should go meet Rhoda.” I said with gritted teeth, trying my hardest not to glare at Donald.
“She’s upset and I understand her. You might have to give us a bit more time to prepare.” Shawn assured his dad.
I scoffed. “I thought rich people always want to get married to someone of their status?” I said to Donald. “I’m sure your friends have female daughters. Why don’t you pair them with your son while I work as a maid to settle the debt?”
Donald continued to stare at me with a plain expression, saying nothing.
“You all don’t have to pretend towards me. I know your intentions are not pure. I don’t care what they are but I’m not going to fall into you all’s trap.”
“You don’t even know us that well to conclude,” Donald said.
“I know enough. The first time I saw you, you acted like a man whose son was crippled, but here you are today, looking all calm after making a joke out of my life.”
I saw a frown form on Donlad’s forehead. “Aren’t you relieved that you wouldn’t be having a baby for a crippled?”
“Crippled or not, I want nothing to do with this family. Go after my stepmom for whatever heir you want.”
“Can you stop this?!” Shawn raised his voice at me. “Even if you are an adult, Rhoda has always been responsible for you and she has every right to make decisions for you. The contract is binding and if you back out, You and your stepmom will spend the rest of your lives behind bars!” Shawn said.
My eyes got itchy with tears. I don’t know what caused that. The words he said or the tone in which he said them to me. I rose to my feet, reached for his cup which still had some wine left in it, and poured it in his face.
Donald’s eyes went wide and if looks could kill, I would have been long gone with the way Shawn was glaring at me. I placed the now-empty glass cup on the table and stormed out of the dining room.
I was able to find my way out of the mansion. I went over to Shawn’s car and leaned against it, mumbling words of affirmation to encourage myself not to cry. I had no idea how long I did that but I heard footsteps which made me look up. It was Kelvin.
“You messed up his clothes?” He said, standing to my left.
“I don’t care,” I mumbled, wiping tears from the inner corner of my eyes.
“You piss him off real good.”
“He does worse to me,” I said to Kelvin.
“You are really his match,” Kev said with so much sincerity.
“Please don’t say that. Your family is weird as fuck. If I had my way I wouldn’t be here.”
I sighed, “I shouldn’t even be talking to you. Cos you all are one.”
“You are really feisty, aren’t you?” He said and I rolled my eyes.
“Yeah, we may be one by blood but we’ve all got different personalities.”
“And I didn’t mean to offend you when I said you are Shawn’s match. Just that you both are really stubborn and I can’t help but wonder what the future is going to be like for you both.”
“Shawn has been rigid all his life. He is used to people doing what he instructs without hesitation. But here you are, challenging him at every opportunity.”
“A valid reason why he should divorce me!” I interrupted.
“I don’t know about that but Shawn doesn’t like defeat. I see you the same way.”
I puffed out the air in my mouth, folding my arms.
“This is not me supporting my brother but yeah, Shawn can be difficult. He can be an asshole but he’s not a terrible person.”
“He is your blood so you are bound to make excuses for him.”
“I know you do not know me that well but I wish you would believe in this.”
“Don’t blame me. Trusting you or any member of your family would be the worst thing I can ever do to myself.”
Kelvin chuckled, massaging his knuckles. “I do not blame you for feeling that way. This also means that we’ve got so much to do in terms of winning you over.”
I rolled my eyes at Kelvin’s statement. “I don’t want you all’s kindness. I want a divorce!”
Kelvin went quiet. I wanted to ask him why he didn’t attend the wedding but I decided to let go.
Kev stared at me, this time around with more sincere eyes. “He won’t hurt you.”
“Then you don’t know your brother as you claim.” I challenged them as I was very sure that they had no idea of the things he was up to; including his secret playroom.
Or what if his father and brother were into something like that? What if it was a family thing? I felt my heart race at the thought of that.
“Your mind's made up and it seems there is nothing I can say to convince you at the moment. But I think you should have an open mind. Life with us cannot be that bad.”
I was almost responding to Kev when I saw Shawn head in our direction. He was now in a clean shirt and had a stern look. He walked in the direction of the driver's seat while Kev opened the door to the front passenger seat for me. I thanked him and got in.
“Take care of yourself.” He said politely with a small smile before shutting the door.
The ride home was dead quiet, just like it was on our way here. The few times I took a glance at Shawn, I saw him holding onto the wheels tightly but I didn’t care. I spent my time with my thoughts, looking out of the window into the streets.
We got home in no time and I helped myself out of the car, making my way in immediately.
“We need to talk!” Shawn commanded the moment we got to the living room.
I ignored him and made my way up the stairs. I heard heavy footsteps behind me but I refused to pay him any attention.
“Cassie!!!!” He called again on the stairs but I ignored him.
Hardly had I entered the room when Shawn appeared right in front of me. “Why are you ignoring me?” The tone of his voice didn’t trigger me but the anger in his eyes sort of scared me.
I swallowed painfully, then folded my arms. “What do you want because I’ve got nothing to say to you.”
“You owe me an explanation for acting that way before my father.”
I shook my head, “I am not going to pretend and make false promises. I’m sure you have fucked so many women in that room. Go meet one of them to create a baby for you and leave me the hell alone!!!!!” I said at the top of my voice only to realize that I must have triggered the man standing before me. This deep look of desire flashing in his eyes was something that I had never seen before.
Before I could take a step backward, Shawn grabbed me by my hand and pushed me against the bed. He took a step back and started to unbuckle his pants, not taking his eyes off me. “I won’t stop until you plead for mercy.”
Cold shivers ran down my spine.
What have you done, Cassie?
