                    Cassie’s POV
“Why?” Out of all the million things going on in my mind, this was the only thing that escaped my lips as I continued to stare at her with a blank look. I needed no introduction when I saw Kelvin to know he was related to Shawn. But it was different with the woman right in front of me. Besides, where was she last night?
She shrugged, “because he is really protective of you.”
I shook my head, not believing the response. “Thank you but I can take care of myself,” I mumbled, almost shutting the door when she stopped me.
“Waittttttt!”
“You don’t believe me?” This time around the smile on Kayla’s face faded and was replaced with a little disappointment.
I tried not to feel bad because she was looking really cheerful when I opened the door. As though she was excited to see me.
“I didn’t say that. I just want to be alone.” I mumbled, hoping she would understand.
Kayla stared at me intently. “Are you crying?” Her voice came out in almost a whisper. It was then I realized my eyes were heavy with tears.
“Are you really fine? I’m so sorry if I made you feel bad or if I came in at the wrong time. I was so excited to be here. To meet you and to spend the next few days with you.”
“Shawn never calls me or asks me for help so I was really happy when he reached out to me for this.” She said then opened the flap of her crossbody bag. “This is his card.” She showed it to me. It was a black card. It had Shawn’s name on it with an ‘E’ initials which was probably his surname. And that was when it hit me that I had no idea what his other names were. I probably saw it on the marriage certificate at the registry but I was too broken that day for anything to register in my head.
“He told me to take you shopping because you need a couple of things. I don’t know if you have a list ready yet, but if you don’t, I can assist you in making one. He said I should make sure you buy anything you want and I should help you settle in.”
“He also mentioned you are a bit under the weather so I should keep my eyes on you and call the doctor if you are in pain or anything.”
“Shawn would kill me if I didn’t show up here and on time. But I respect your decision if you want to be alone. I’ll just wait somewhere in the house until you are ready to talk.”
My eyes were on Kayla as she spoke. Tears escaped my eyes when she was almost done, but I wiped them away immediately, then made my way in, leaving the door open. Trying so hard not to burst into loud tears and trying not to limp at the same time was really tough. So I let the tears flow while bearing the pain in my lower body. The last thing I wanted was for Kayla to come up with suspicions.
I got to the bedside, sat on the edge, then wiped my tears away with the back of my palm. I had no idea why I was feeling so much pain. My head was a mess and it was difficult to tell whose side Shawn was. Maybe because I valued personal confrontations rather than third-party actions. He treats me like shit yet he acts caring through other people. Life was really predictable with my exes. I knew they were going to get rid of me at some point, but with Shawn, things are just so complicated. I don’t even recognize myself or my feelings anymore.
From the corner of my eyes, I could still see Kayla by the door. She continued to stare in confusion.
“Ca…can I come in?” Her voice came out as a whisper but I said nothing.
She took a step in. “I know I’ve got no right to be in here, but I can’t bear to see you this way. Please do let me know if you still want some privacy.” Kayla said, went ahead to shut the door behind her, and then she took slow steps towards me.
She stood before me, then crouched. “I’m here if you need someone to talk to.”
Silence.
“Do you miss your husband?” She asked.
“Okay, say no more.” She mumbled based on my look at her previous question.
“Shawn is an asshole.” I was surprised by the tone of her voice. She had been speaking so calmly since she arrived so this switch was unexpected.
“What I mean to say is that I know my brother can be really annoying. It could get to a point where you just wanna kick him in the ass. I really apologize on his behalf and I promise you that I’m going to give him a piece of my mind.”
“I have nothing against Shawn.” I had no idea why I said that to her.
“If you say so. But I would still let him know that he can do better. He is married now. I mean, I had no idea he had something serious going on with someone. Sorry about that; we all thought he was going to die single since his past relationships lasted only for short periods and most importantly, his job was his life.”
“But he’s married now and you come first. For you to feel this way, it means he is not doing a great job as a husband. You seemed shocked to see me. I bet he didn’t tell you I would be coming over. I know this is Shawn’s house but you are married to him so that makes this your house too and he should have informed you that a strange face was coming over.”
Okay, I was starting to get impressed by Kayla’s courtesy. She seems younger than her brother, but she speaks like she’s very experienced.
“I took after my mom and I don’t appear much on socials like Kelvin and Shawn so most people find it hard to believe that we are siblings.”
“Younger than Shawn?” I couldn’t help but ask. She had a petite frame, a beautiful face that made her look so young but the wise words from her made her look older.
“Yeah, but just three years. He said I conceived by mistake.”
I frowned, “Really?”
“Like I said, Shawn is an asshole. He said Dad promised him he was going to be an only child till he was five but I came in and I made his life hell.”
“How did he remember all of that?” I couldn’t help but ask.
“Shawn’s weird. He does or says anything to make his damn self feel better. He likes to be in control.”
I swallowed painfully upon Kayla’s last statement.
