Cassie’s Pov
I have met Shawn’s Dad, his brother Kelvin and now, Kayla. I was tempted to ask after their mom or if they had any more siblings but I couldn’t bring myself to do so. Since Kayla had no idea why her brother married me, maybe it was best to leave it that way.
“Let’s forget about Shawn. I care more about you. Do you feel better?” She stared at me intently and I tried to stop my eyes from itching with more tears. I was not used to people asking me if I was fine. No one really cared about me until I came to this house.
I nodded, not knowing what to say to Kayla. I had wanted to stay alone to clear my head but speaking to Kayla hasn’t been terrible so far.
“Are you sure? I saw you walking uncomfortably ear…….” She was saying when her eyes met with the items on my nightstand, particularly the ointment. I had no idea what was going through Kayla’s mind but her lips instantly curved into a beautiful smile.
“What is it?” I whispered.
“Never mind, my silly thoughts were getting ahead of me.”
Well, if she guessed right in her mind, then she was smarter than I thought.
“I think I like you already,” Kayla said, bringing me out of my thoughts.
“But you don’t know me that well,” I responded. She would probably treat me differently if she ever found out the reason behind my marriage to her brother. I’m still surprised she doesn’t know. I’m not sure if Kelvin knew as well.
“You are making my brother do things we never thought we would see him do. He married you after we thought he was going to die a lonely man. Shawn and I could go for a year without talking. I’m always in charge of planning family trips but he never shows up because of work. What I meant to say was, I was surprised to see his call at midnight. For the first time, he said the ‘please’ word to me so I knew you had to be someone special. He doesn’t care about people unless it’s work-related.”
She chuckled, “Did I mention that this is also my first time in Shawn’s home? I don’t know how you managed to tame him but thank you.”
“And I really can’t wait to be an aunt.”
Kayla smiled shyly. “Sorry if I triggered you with that. I just don’t know how to keep exciting thoughts. But thank you for coming into Shawn’s life and it’s a pleasure to meet you.”
“It’s nice to meet you too.”
“So what would you like to do today? Do you still want some time alone?” She asked.
“I don’t feel too good so I don’t think I can go anywhere today.”
“It’s fine. We can always go shopping tomorrow. Do you have a list already?” She asked and I shook my head.
“We can make one when we are well rested.”
“I don’t think that’s necessary since I would be getting just a few things.”
“Girl, your husband has been working so fucking hard since he was in diapers. You’ve got every right to spend his money as much as you want.”
“Since you all just got married, I don’t know if you’ve gone out with him.”
“Shawn attends lots of events where very important people are present. He might want you to come with him so that means you need to look really good and I don’t think he would want you to wear a dress twice. Yeah, jewelry might be understandable but not clothes.”
“I can only wear them once?” I said in disbelief.
“The ones you wear for big events. I’m sure they would be customs so the designers can thrift them out for you or something. But it’s up to you to decide what you want to do with them. You can also give them to your siblings. But with other dresses, you can wear them as much as you want.”
“Sorry if this sounds strange to you. Shawn’s got a really high reputation so the lifestyle can be quite crazy.”
I nodded, not knowing what to say.
Kayla’s eyes met with the nightstand again. “I can see you’ve not taken your drugs. Have you had something to eat?”
“I’m not hungry.”
She shook her head. “Shawn is going to kill me if he finds out you’ve not had anything today.”
“Thank you for your care but I’m fine.”
“How about I make you some tacos?”
“I’m not a fan,” I replied in all honestly.
“One bite. Please.” Kayla pushed, sounding really confident of me liking it.
“You just arrived. You should be resting and not running around to make me something to impress me. I don’t think I’m worth it.”
“Of course, I need to impress my sister-in-law. And if you are not worth it, Shawn wouldn’t have married you. Trust me, my brother can be very picky. He doesn’t like people in his space but here you are.”
Kayla eventually rose to her feet “I will be back soon with the tacos, then we will make your list.” She tossed her cross-body bag on the sofa and then exited the room.
I heaved a deep sigh and ran my fingers through my long wavy hair. The last thing I needed was someone liking me or getting fond of me; especially when there is a possibility of divorce. My mind was about to start thinking of Shawn but I shook my head, shoving all thoughts of him away. I gently rose to my feet, picked up the ointment from the nightstand, and limped my way to the bathroom. I applied the substance in the right places, cleaned up, and was back in the room in no time.
I reached for a book in the nightstand drawer, then occupied the sofa. I was a couple of pages in when a knock came through on the door. I answered and it turned out to be Kayla who walked in with a tray.
“Can I?” She asked if she could place the tray on my lap.
I nodded.
“Thank you,” I mumbled as she did that and instantly my stomach rumbled. She smiled while I blushed. I promise I wasn’t hungry but seeing this made my mouth water. The tacos looked delicious and she accompanied it with a glass of juice and a bowl of mixed fruits.
Kayla was busy on her phone while I ate and once I was done, She made sure I took some painkillers and then helped me create a list. It was almost as though I was about to be born again. From hair accessories to clothes, shoes, bags, jewelry, skincare, and makeup. I was about to own so much stuff that I never even dreamt of.
………………………………….
Kayla was about to take off her clothes to take a shower when her phone buzzed. She reached for it on the bed and instantly rolled her eyes when she saw the caller ID. She answered and put the phone on speaker.
“Why did it take you so long to answer?” Shawn’s stern voice came through, making Kayla scoff knowing it only rang like four times before she picked up.
“Well good evening to you too, Shawn. Or whatever the time is where you are.”
Shawn ignored, “How is she?”
“Who?” Kayla feigned innocence.
“My baby.”
Kayla smiled at the possessiveness in her brother’s voice.
