“Is that what you call her?”
“I mean, have you ever called her that in her presence?” Kayla said, taking a seat on the bed.
Shawn grumbled. “This is why I don’t like to ask for favors. I involved you in my life but that doesn’t mean you need to question me every time.”
Kayla shrugged even though her brother couldn’t see her. “You’ve involved me now so you’ve got no choice but to answer me.”
“And I am not prying. The question is based on concern from what I noticed.”
“What did you notice? Did she say anything to you?” Shawn asked.
“No. You are lucky to have a wife who is composed and minds her business. She was shocked to see me so I assumed you didn’t tell her that I would be coming over. If you called her sweet names in her face, then there was no way you wouldn’t have told her about me.”
“Not today, Kayla.” Shawn groaned.
“So that’s it? You will continue to call her sweet names behind her?”
“She’s my wife. Shouldn’t that be enough affirmation to her?”
“Of course not. She’s not a witch so she cannot know what is going on in your mind and head.”
“Okay, since you want a full report, I will let you know how everything went.”
“She wasn’t in a good mood when I arrived and she teared up. That’s enough to make me believe you are not taking good care of your wife and don’t think I am referring to just material items. No one forced you to get married to her so the least you can do is to be a good husband.”
“If it will make you feel better, She doesn’t think you like her and if you know you truly have feelings for her, then I suggest that you step up your game.”
“I’m going to let you off on this but did you even think of the fact that I could be trying my best but she is just difficult to deal with? Did she tell you about the gifts I’ve given her that she rejected?”
“Like I said earlier, not all women fancy material stuff and your wife is definitely not one of them. We made a shopping list together but she declined wanting a lot of things.”
“I commend you if you are doing your best but sadly, it’s not enough. You are a grown-ass man so I won’t tell you want to do but my concern is coming from a place of love. I was the happiest to know that you’ve found a woman who you want to spend the rest of your life with. I spent the whole day with her and I think she’s amazing. You should give this marriage your all if you feel something for her.”
There was a few seconds of silence between the duo before Shawn spoke. “Did she have something to eat at all? Doreen said she refused her meals.”
Kayla decided not to pry any further. But she hoped that her brother would make things right.
“Yes, She had tacos for brunch and fried rice for dinner.”
“She wasn’t feeling too well for the most part of the day but she was better after dinner. The list is ready so we will go shopping tomorrow.”
“Thank you,” Shawn said from the other end.
Kayla smiled, noting this was the second polite word her brother had ever said to her.
‘Keep doing what you are doing, Cassie.’ Her subconscious said.
“You’re welcome. You are going to talk to her before she goes to bed, right?”
“No.” He answered immediately.
Kayla frowned. “Why?”
“She doesn’t own a phone.”
Kayla frowned even deeper. “How is that possible?” She said, then shrugged off the thoughts. “I can give her my phone so you both can talk.”
“No need.” Shawn’s stern voice came through.
“I’m more than willing to g….” Kayla was saying this when her older brother interrupted. “I have to go.” He said, after which the call went off.

The next day.
Cassie’s Pov.
“Kayla, wait!” I stopped in my tracks the moment we came out of one of the shops in the mall and she did the same. “I think I have enough. We’ve bought everything on the list. I don’t need anything else.” I said to her wondering how there was still money on the card since we spent so much already. I had no idea shopping here was this expensive. This was the third time Enoch and Henry were taking shopping bags into the car. As a debtor’s child, I was starting to feel so uncomfortable.
“Gosh, you are so humble. Yes, I know we’ve exhausted your list but there are some things Shawn wants you to have. We’ve got three more shops to go, then we will get you a phone after which we will go somewhere nice for food.”
I was hesitant but Kayla managed to convince me. We got more shoes, swimwear, underwear, and dresses before going to the phone shop. I knew nothing about Gadgets but Kayla was able to guide me to pick the best one. Life was really crazy because never did it occur to me that I would one day become a phone owner or a tab owner. Yeah, Kayla noticed I liked to read books so she suggested that I could do that comfortably with the tab.
From the gadget store, we went to the pharmacy in the mall because Kayla wanted to pick up some vitamins. While she was waiting in line to make payment, I took slow steps around the shop, randomly feeding my eyes with the items displayed on the shelves. My eyes met with an after pill and I froze, stopping in my tracks.
Didn’t know much about drugs but I could recognize this pack because my ex-husband insisted I take them after sex. Shawn wants a child but I do not trust him enough to be the father of my baby. I really wanted to pick the pill for myself but I remembered that I had no money on me. I stood still as I got lost in my thoughts, thinking of what to do.
“Cassie? You okay?” Kayla’s voice brought me out of my thoughts. When did she get here?
I saw her take a glance at the pill pack since that was what I was staring at.
Shittttt!
