“So you came running all the way from another continent just to see your woman?” Kayla smirked at her older brother who was in a slightly bent position, with his upper body leaning against the railings. The duo were on the balcony.
“Don’t try to tease me.” He warned Kayla.
“I’m not. I’m just saying.”
“Did you miss her that much?”
“You know what?” Shawn stood upright. “I think your time is up here.”
“This is my first time in your home and you are going to chase me away because you do not need me anymore?”
Shawn frowned, “Were you planning on staying here forever?”
“I wasn’t. But Cassie is amazing so I don’t mind spending more time with her.”
“I hope you didn’t tell her stupid things about me?”
“Like what?” Kayla teased.
“Kayla!!!!” Shawn growled, causing Kayla to chuckle. This was the first normal conversation they were having in years and she was enjoying every bit of it.
“I told you already that we hardly spoke about you. It was obvious she was mad at you so we just had fun and mostly, she was focusing on getting better. I don’t know what made you change your mind but I’m glad you are here and I hope she sees the sincerity in your actions.”
“You women are just so difficult!l
Kay couldn’t help with the laughter that escaped her lips.
“You think so?”
Shawn said nothing.
“What if you are the one with issues?”
“I’m not,” Shawn said firmly as he stared at his little sister.
“I mean, you are stubborn and she’s a bit feisty too. One person has to put his guard down a bit and I think you should take that lead. You are the man so you should fight for her.”
“You know how much I want to murder you when you tell me what to do.” He playfully glared at her.
“And you’ve got no idea how much pride I’ve got in my heart to be in this position. The world doesn’t revolve around you, you know. Your wife is a very sensitive person. She seems to appreciate genuine personality more than any material things you can offer her. So if you don’t want to lose her, then you need to change.”
“Enough about me. Your services are no longer needed. When would you be taking your leave?”
“User!!!” Kay playfully glared at him.
“I didn’t mean to sound harsh. But you know how much I love my privacy. I’m glad I could call upon you to come look after Cassie. I mean, we never had a good relationship before now but you still tossed aside your job and helped me with this. So, thank you.”
“Let me know if you want anything and I’ll make sure it’s done.”
Kay could see the sincerity in her brother’s eyes and that warmed her heart so much. She smiled. “No, it’s fine. I’m happy to do this.”
…………………..
Cassie’s POV
“Asshole!” I mumbled as I stared back at the cursive written words on the note. I ran my fingers through it. If this was Shawn’s writing, then he won in life for real. His writing was just as good as his looks.
I wasn’t expecting this gesture but it was comforting to know that he didn’t just disappear like he usually does.
I stuffed the paper back in the middle of the roses, then pushed the duvet aside. I mentally facepalmed when it hit me that I was naked. Before I came into Shawn’s home, I was filled with dreams and aspirations but now, I had no idea what was going on.
I got down from the bed and slowly took steps to the bathroom. To my surprise, I wasn’t limping but I felt sore down there.
I did my business, dried my body, and changed into one of the dresses I got yesterday. It was a tube dress; brown and long. I smiled seeing how the fabric fitted me like a second skin. I put my hair in a low bun. Wore a pair of stud earrings, paired my dress with matching Oran sandals, wore some perfume, then exited the room.
I met Shawn and Kayla in the dining room.
“Good morning!” Kayla smiled at me.
“Morning.” I returned the smile.
“You look so pretty.” She giggled and I blushed. I hardly had any new stuff, and I wouldn’t deny that I was glad to be wearing this gorgeous dress.
I could feel Shawn’s eyes boring holes into my skin but I paid him no attention. Kayla was seated to his left while Shawn sat at the head of the table. I was tempted to sit beside Kay so I would be as far away from Shawn as possible but I didn’t want to cause any suspicion so I unwillingly made my way to Shawn’s right-hand side.
I was almost pulling out a chair for myself when he grabbed me by my arm and pulled me onto his lap. My eyes went wide.
He wrapped his right arm around my waist just to put me still.
“Shawn. Let go.” I whispered. I was certain he heard me but he ignored.
I saw Kayla fighting her smile.
“There’s an empty seat here.” This time around, I voiced out loud.
“I know. You are going to sit where I want you to.” I recognized that very tone in Shawn’s voice. I knew there was nothing I could say that would convince him so I tried to get comfortable on his lap even though that was the hardest thing to do right now with Kayla’s eyes on us.
The table was still empty so I guess the chef was going to bring the food soo……. What the?! I felt Shawn’s lips against the side of my forehead. “You smell so good.” He whispered in my ear, making me shiver, and then his fingers started robbing circles around my belly. I wasn’t even pregnant yet and he was already this possessive.
“Behave! Your sister is here!” I warned.
Shawn shrugged. “That doesn’t mean I should treat you any less.”
My eyes met with Kay, I saw her proud smile and I couldn’t help with the blush that crept to my cheeks. Okay, this was an added feather to Shawn’s cap. No one had ever shown me off proudly.
Kayla handed over Shawn’s black card to him, and he passed it on to me.
I frowned, staring between him and the card, still not accepting it. “What for?”
“Yours! In case you have anything you want to buy.”
I shook my head.
“Cassie!” He groaned, reminding me that he hated it when people refused him.
“Do you want me to have your name printed on it so it can look more like yours?”
“With all that I got yesterday, how come there’s still money left in it? Isn’t this the part where you scold me for buying too much?”
Shawn turned his attention to his sister. “Did she spend up to $100,000?”
Kayla shook her head. “She refused anything with high price tags.”
“You don’t check your statements?” I frowned at Shawn.
“I don’t have time for that. I’ve got someone in charge.”
“$100,000 for shopping? Isn’t that insane?”
Kay and Shawn looked absolutely normal while I was the one freaking out.
“I had expected you to spend up to 500. That means you didn’t get much stuff.”
“You don’t need to worry about running out of money on the card. Now take.”
I froze where I was seated, still not believing the guts of these people. I shook my head once more. “I won’t be able to breathe if I’m in possession of this card. What if I get robbed?”
Kay chuckled. Shawn turned to his sister and spoke. “You see how stubborn she can be?”
“No. Her concerns are valid. But Sis,” She turned her attention to me. “No one is going to rob you. Shawn will protect you.”
I shook my head, still not convinced. “You’ve provided all that I need. I don’t see myself buying anything soon.”
Shawn sighed, placing the card on the table. “I’ll put it in your purse when I get to the room.”
I was about to oppose when the door flung open and both chefs came through with the food, filling up the table with our favorite breakfast.
“I should take my seat.”
“Don’t you dare!” Shawn warned as I almost stood up. He picked up the cutlery, sliced a piece of pancake, and brought the fork close to my mouth.
“You refused to have good food in my absence but I’m here now and more than happy to do this.” He said, waiting for me to open my mouth so he could feed me the pancake.
I heard Kayla giggle.
