Cassie’s Pov
I stared into my husband’s eyes. “Your date.” I had no idea why my heart was beating really fast against my chest. I knew how terrible the previous one ended so I wasn’t sure how to act with this.
“Yes.” He answered.
“What event and why do you need me there?” I had no idea if my question sounded rude but that was just me being curious.
“Don Travous’ birthday dinner.”
“He’s a top businessman. A lot of colleagues would be there too and they would be attending with their partners.”
“You are sure you want me to come with you?” I asked.
“Of course. You are my wife.”
“Are you sure?” I stared at Shawn as though he had horns on his head. “You just mentioned that important people are going to be there.”
“You are my wife, hence, you are important.”
I supported my hand against my head so I could look into his eyes properly. “Aren’t you scared that I might embarrass you?”
“How?” Shawn asked.
I can’t believe we were naked in the living room, with our clothes scattered on the floor, oozing sex and comfortably making conversations. He was slowly starting to tear down the walls I had built around myself; because tell me why I was this comfortable, doing things that I never thought I would with him?
“I have never been in the midst of so many important people. I know you rich people have etiquette that I do not know about. I would rather stay home and watch tv than embarrass myself before people I cannot match up with.”
“You know we are all humans just like you.” Shawn voiced out. From the tone of his voice, he doesn’t seem pleased with my choice of words.”
“It’s easy to make such statements from your perspective. But I’m sure you don’t need me to tell you that my kind doesn’t fit in. If they knew my history, I probably wouldn’t be allowed in there.”
Shawn adjusted himself so he could look deeper into my eyes. “I don’t care what your background is or what happened to you in the past. You are my wife and no one is going to dare to disrespect you.”
“If only you could see yourself the way we see you, you would appreciate yourself even more,” Shawn said and I chuckled.
“It’s easier for you to say so. You haven’t walked in my shoes so I would rather you do not judge. I lived a life where my confidence was pierced every single day. I’m not sure I would ever have it back and even if I did, it’s going to take a while.”
“It’s fine, I’ll just call in sick,” Shawn said without a care in the world.
I frowned. “You are seriously going to ditch the party because of me?”
“The last time I was out with a lady, you accused me of cheating on you. There’s no way I would go there alone without you seeing me on socials with probably another woman gawking at me. We are starting to understand each other and I do not want to ruin it.”
I attempted to respond to Shawn but words failed me. His words pierced my heart…..really deep. He was really putting my feelings into consideration which was why he wanted to ditch the party.
“I accused you of cheating?” I reiterated.
He arched a brow at me. “Didn’t you?”
I shook my head. “Whatever you choose to do is none of my business. I was upset at you for not being direct with me.”
“Whatever! Since you do not believe that I’m going to protect you, then it makes no sense to go without you.”
“But what am I going to do there? Stand by your side while you converse with your partners? What am I going to say to them if they ask about my life? I know nothing about the business. I’m not being insensitive. I just don’t want to embarrass myself and embarrass you.” I said, hoping he would understand.
“It’s fine. We would spend the time at home. I’ll send a gift to the celebrant to make up for my absence.”
I scoffed. “Okay, I’m not going to attack you. Just go and do your thing.” I was starting to feel guilty about him telling a lie because of me.”
“If you don’t want to be there, then I shouldn’t be there.”
“Stop acting like a kid, Shawn,” I warned.
“I’m not.” He mumbled, sneaking his hand to my boob. But I slapped his hand away. We were discussing something really important and I didn’t want to get distracted.
“Would your Dad be there?”
“Yes. Is that why you don’t wanna go with me?” He asked.
“The media also?” I asked Shawn, ignoring his question.
“Sure!”
I swallowed painfully. “The whole world is going to see me as your woman?”
“I guess so!” Shawn said as though it was no big deal. I felt my heart beating hard against my chest. It was terrifying enough to be in the same room with elites but going viral as his wife?
“Is there anything you aren’t telling me about?” Shawn continued to stare deeply into my eyes.
“Are you sure you want people to know I’m your wife? Won't they ask questions? Your reputation? You could have had a grand wedding where you celebrate with your partners and fellow elites, but you came to the hoods to come get me. This is never going to make sense to me, Shawn.”
Shawn sat up. He pulled me up too and made me sit on his lap. It wasn’t the wisest thing to do sitting on his dick, but I had no strength left in me to fight him.
He titled my face with his fingers so that I could look him in the eye. “I don’t care what anyone thinks of me. My actions are prompted by my desires and not to prove a point to anyone. I’m from this part of the world but that doesn’t mean I need to live by anyone’s standards or traditions. I can get married to whoever I want and in any location of my desire.”
“Some things are not just your business and this answer is targeted towards your last sentence. I told you I was never going to discuss it with you and you should try to live in the moment. No one is going to question my decision to marry you. I just wished you would trust me enough to believe.”
“I already made up my mind. I’m not attending the party anymore so free yourself from any form of anxiety.” He extended his finger to my lip and ran a hand over my lower lip.
“It’s okay if you are not ready but this is something you would have to do as long as you are my wife. I cannot hide you forever.”
“My eyes started to get itchy with tears but I tried my best not to get emotional. I huffed. “But my ex-husbands’ kept me as their dirty secret.”
