I tried to take Shawn’s hands off my waist but he just wouldn’t budge. “We had a deal. You said you wouldn’t be nasty.”
“I need to know what’s going on in your head before you begin to accuse me.” He said like someone who had done nothing wrong.
“I had no idea why my heart was racing fast. The thought of him doing silly things to me in public scared me. Sadly, I was beginning to anticipate it even though I didn’t want it.
‘Shut up! You want his dick so much!’ my subconscious mocked me.
“We are going to be at the party. In the midst of reputable people like you said. How in hell would your mind be elsewhere?”
“We shall see, honey.” He leaned close and placed a kiss on my forehead.
“You don’t have to be nervous. I won’t let you feel pain and neither would I embarrass you.”
“Please let’s get out of here,” I mumbled, not trusting myself anymore.
Shawn pulled me closer. “Scared?”
“We are going to be late,” I grumbled, ignoring the tingling feelings in my stomach.
“I’ll be the one to decide that.” He hugged me, staring down at my eyes.
“I dislike clingy people.”
“I don’t care. I’m your husband. God! You smell so good.”
I smiled but made sure he didn’t see it.
Placing a kiss on my forehead once more, Shawn finally let go of me. “Don’t pay attention to anyone that gawks at you.”
I smiled, knowing it was my time to shine.
“But it’s not my fault if they do.”
“We can always go back up and undress. We will spend the rest of the night doing what we love.”
“No. You convinced me. And now that we are all dressed, we are attending the party.”
“Flaunt your ring at them when they do.”
I thought Shawn was trying to crack a joke but the seriousness in his face didn’t go unnoticed.
I brought up my hand and took a glance at my finger where the ring sat. “This doesn’t match your personality, does it?”
For a moment, I saw something close to sadness on Shawn’s face.
“I’m such a fool.” He mumbled to himself, then faced me. “Of course, you would be suspicious if I had given you something more elegant at the wedding. I will make an appointment at the jewelry store tomorrow. You will pick the ring you want.”
My heart skipped. “No, No, No. That wasn’t the intention. This is fine.” I took a glance at the wedding band. The last thing I wanted was to wear a rock that was worth a fortune as a daily accessory.
“No. It truly doesn’t fit my personality. We will fix it tomorrow.”
I mentally facepalmed, wondering why I did this to myself.
“But show it to them regardless,” Shawn said.
“Wouldn’t that tamper with your reputation?” I asked him.
“Yeah, I could have done better with that.” He stared at the ring on my finger “But I’m not ashamed that we are married and we got hitched with that.”
“Are you sure?”
“I’m not going to deny my wife because my dumbass self gave her an ugly ring.”
He stared at me from head to toe. “You are going to turn heads with this outfit and I hope I will be able to survive it. If not, we would be leaving the event ASAP.”
…….
“How do I look, Mom?” Lauretta said as she slowly made her grand entrance into the living room.
“Oh my!” Rhoda, who was already dressed up, rose to her feet and approached her daughter. “You look so amazing, princess. Gosh, I have no doubt you are going to be the most beautiful bride-to-be tonight.” She said, admiring her daughter’s red dress.
Lori arched her brow, “Bride to be?”
“Yes, my love. Tonight, our dream is coming through. Hence, I’m speaking nothing but positivity.”
Lauretta giggled. “I like that. Dad is going to be so proud of me. This family is going to be known for riches and fame because of my efforts and your help of course. Something that shitty step-sister of mine couldn’t do. I wonder how she is fairing with her cripple husband. She is probably pregnant with a cripple baby right now. Dad must be so disappointed in her.”
“Come on, Lori. You need to stop thinking about her. I’m sure she is having fun living a poor and stinky life. I think we finally got it right this time because, by this time in her previous marriages, I was already receiving calls and threats from her ex-husbands about divorcing her because of how stubborn she was. But no news from these people so far. No doubt we finally hit the jackpot.” Rhoda said.
“I thought you blocked their numbers?” Lauretta asked.
Rhoda shrugged. “I did but who cares? If there was any issue, I’m sure they would have found a way to reach out to me.”
“That’s true,” Lori mumbled.
“Let’s not talk about her. She’s bad news. Tonight is all about positivity, remember?”
Lauretta nodded, then squealed. “I can’t get over this dress.”
Rhoda smiled, staring at her daughter. “You look so elegant in it and I can’t wait to see all eyes on you. But do not get carried away because we’ve got our eyes on someone already.”
“So what did you call his name again?” Lori asked.
“Shawn Elias.”
“Shawn…Elias…..” Lori reiterated in a whisper tone. “Are you sure he is a billionaire, mama? His name doesn’t ring a bell.”
“Oh my love, it hurts when you don’t trust me. I did my research well. Right now, he is the wealthiest man in the country. Even Don Travous respects him so much. And despite the fact that he has his own bloody money, he also comes from a rich family. Imagine you being his wife. Our generation would never suffer. My grandchildren will be so grateful to you for choosing an amazing father for them.”
Lori smiled sweetly. “Thank you, Mom.” Lauretta reached for her mother’s hand and gave it a light squeeze. “You’ve put in so much work and I promise not to let you down tonight.”
“I trust you, my love. We should be on our way. I can’t wait to see my son-in-law.” Rhoda smiled.
