Lauretta’s Pov
My chest continued to rise and fall in anger as I stared at the witch before me. Tell me why the hell she was seated beside a very handsome man. A man who looks better than Joel. Or could he be my husband? I swear I was going to rip her hair off if the man beside her turned out to be the man that my mother carefully picked for me.
After accessing him, my eyes went back to Cassie. I swallowed painfully seeing her dress in more detail. As someone who spent most of her life obsessing about designer items, even though I couldn’t afford them, I could tell which outfit was real or fake. My heart sank in the realization of what Cassie was wearing. It was an exclusive piece designed for the high and mighty. I wasn’t sure about the exact figure but the price was capable of buying me all the luxury stuff I needed in my life right now.
I thought I had seen it all when my eyes landed on her neckpiece. Even a dullard would know that that was some real diamonds.
No, this can’t be true. Cassie is a fraud. She had always been. I didn’t bother to look at her shoes because I didn't want to be triggered by her false life.
“Did you miss your way?” The man beside Cassie spoke in a calm voice, bringing me out of my thoughts.
Wait, was he defending this cheat?
I scoffed, ignored the handsome dude, then turned my full attention to Cassie. “Cheating on your crippled husband because he has nothing to offer you, hun?” I mocked. I hated the fact that I was trying to keep my voice low. I wanted to spill her secrets so badly but I remembered that this place was filled with dignitaries. I was careful not to embarrass myself because my husband was watching.
“Excuse me?” The man beside her started to glare at me.
Cassie placed a hand on him, as though she was trying to calm him.
I scoffed. “I knew it!!!! You are nothing but a pig. You agreed to be here in exchange for selling your body, didn't you?” I said to Cassie, then turned to the man sitting by her. “Let me guess, She didn’t open up to you that she’s married? To a man who can’t walk. I don’t care whatever she told you but she’s just with you for your money. She is the daughter of a debtor who can’t even afford the real version of her outfit. She’s just here to try her luck with a man to get her out of poverty.” I said confidently.
“Who is she? Why would they even allow deranged people into this party?” he whispered to Cassie but I heard him.
Deranged? Was he seriously kidding me right now?
“Look, I know her more than anyone in the world right now and I promise you that she just wants you for your money. People like her do not belong here. She is flirting with you because her husband is disabled. Come on, you are too good-looking to be fooled by this bitch!”
I didn’t say anything wrong but he glared at me in a way that scared me. “Call her any more names and I will make sure you are thrown out of here!”
My heart raced even harder. The tone in his voice didn’t sound like he was making mere threats.
‘I am friends with Don Travous’s son. There is no way I would be thrown out of here.’ My subconscious told me. ‘Especially when I did nothing wrong.’
“Don’t get it all twisted. I’m a lady with good intentions. She’s the one who is the devil.” I pointed at Cassie. She whispered something into his ear and I instantly rolled my eyes.
“Lori dear, I have been looking all over for you.” My mom’s voice came through and I heaved a sigh of relief. She came to a halt beside me. Her eyes widened when she sighted Cassie.
“What is this witch doing here?” Her voice came out louder than she expected, but thankfully, that didn’t draw attention to us.
“I was shocked to see her here too! I can’t believe she left her disabled man at home and tricked this gentleman to bring her to this party.” I responded as my mom continued to glare at Cassie.
“She hadn’t said a word to me since I confronted her. Her fucking guts!!!”
“Look, I don’t know what she said to you but I can promise you that she’s here to steal from you and to destroy you.” Mom said to the man beside Cassie.
“And what does that have to do with you? What if I am fine with her stealing from me?”
I scoffed. “She has definitely succeeded in bewitching you.”
“Are you sure you don’t want me to throw them out?” He said to Cassie.
“Throw who out?” Mom said. I could see that she was trying so hard to contain her anger.
“We’ve got every right to be here. Unlike her, who's just an escort.”
“It isn’t even up to a month since you got hitched to your needy husband and here you are, whoring around. Your marriage came with a lot of conditions and if he insists on divorcing you without paying off the debt, I swear to you that I’m going to put you in jail.”
“Are you both done?” Cassie voiced out for the first time.
I scoffed in disbelief. Not only was she calm but she spoke with so much confidence for someone who was blatantly committing adultery.
My mom stared in shock. She pointed at herself. “You dare speak to me in such a tone?”
Cassie rolled her eyes.
I was dumbfounded. This was something she wouldn’t do when we were under the same roof.
“Mom, we need to call security,” I said to Rhoda who still stood by my side. I hated the fact that we had a plan but my step-sister’s presence just had to ruin it all.
“Not yet, darling. Everyone needs to know how much of a fraud she is. Most especially this innocent man who thinks we are making a fool of ourselves.”
“Where the hell did you even get your outfit from?” Rhoda said to Cassie.
“You like them?” Cassie challenged, folding her arms.
“Oh please!” My mom rolled her eyes. “We both know there is no way you can afford any of that. And I’m sure your husband cannot provide such. It’s obvious you stole them to impress your fuck buddy.”
“They are dupes, mama. She wants us to believe they are real but my eyes don’t deceive me.”
The man beside Cassie chuckled.
“We should be the ones mocking you. We are telling you the truth for free but here you are, still acting dumb.”
“You all are so embarrassing,” Cassie mumbled, acting like a very classy wife.
“You bitch!” I said with gritted teeth and reached for the glass of champagne on the table. I was about to throw the content at her face when a hand held me back, taking the glass cup away from me.
